‘Yakuza 5’ and ‘Rebel Galaxy’ among the free PlayStation Plus games in August

PlayStation Plus Free PS4 Games Lineup August 2016
PlayStation Plus offered excellent games across all three of Sony’s platforms in July, including Saints Row: Gat out of Hell and Furi, and it looks like August will be no different. Though it relies a little more heavily on indie games than we’ve come to expect, there’s something for everyone next month.

Tricky Towers, an all-new puzzle game from developer WeirdBeard, is the first freebie you’ll be getting on PlayStation 4. The Tetris-like competitive multiplayer game supports both local and online multiplayer and bears some resemblance to Super Famicon’s Tetris Battle Gaiden. PlayStation 4 owners will also get Rebel Galaxy, a space combat game that IGN praised for its combat system and “vast explorable galaxy.”

On PlayStation 3, subscribers will receive Yakuza 5. The open-world crime game was originally released in Japan nearly four years ago, but just saw a Western release in December. It should be the perfect appetizer for Yakuza 0, which will be hitting both North America and Europe in January. Neon spaceship shooter Retro/Grade will also be free on the system all month.

Vita owners will be getting another free PSP game this month: Patapon 3. The action-rhythm title was released in 2011 — shortly before the Vita’s launch — and received lukewarm reviews, with criticism directed at its repetition and difficulty. Ultratron, which will also be available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, is the Vita’s other free game in August and continues the month’s spaceship-heavy theme. Drawing clear inspiration from classic arcade shooters, the game’s aesthetic mixes retro visuals with crisp, quick gameplay.

While not the best month we’ve seen from PlayStation Plus, the service continues to offer a wide variety of games that fans might otherwise not take for a spin. Given the number of PSP games coming to the Vita recently, however, we have to wonder if Sony plans to offer more Vita-exclusive games through the program in the future.

When is the PlayStation Spring Sale 2024?
The PlayStation Spring Sale started on March 27, 2024, but new deals were added on April 10 that will last until April 24.

If any deal is exclusively for a PS5 version of a game that is also on PS4, we will note that beside the title. Since all PS4 games run on PS5, we won't mark PS4 games.

PS Plus Extra subscribers can try two of the month’s biggest PS5 games for free
The main character of Tales of Kenzera: Zau stands with two elemental items.

Both Dave the Diver and Tales of Kenzera: ZAU will launch for PlayStation 5 this month, and both will included in PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra's Game Catalog from day one.

Dave the Diver will be the first to be added, as its PS5 port launches on April 16. Dave the Diver was a surprise hit when it was released for PC in 2023, standing out as a charming game where players go diving for the seafood they then serve in their sushi restaurant. While it was controversially nominated for best indie at The Game Awards despite being developed by Nexon studio Mintrocket, it's still a fantastic game and well worth your time when it finally launches on PS5 in a couple of weeks.

PlayStation Plus’ most notable free April offerings come from Microsoft
Four players stand together in the 4v4 PvP mode of Minecraft Legends.

Sony outlined all the new offerings PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers can expect in April; surprisingly, Microsoft is the company behind two of this month's four offerings, Minecraft Legends, and the Overwatch 2 Mega Bundle.

On April 2, PS Plus can get those two things free of charge in addition to Immortals of Aveum and Skul: The Hero Slayer. Immortals of Aveum is a single-player shooter where players use magic instead of weapons. Although the thing it's most notable for is flopping upon its release, Immortals of Aveum is still a solid shooter that you might have missed out on, and you should give it a shot now that you can get it through PS Plus. Meanwhile, Skul: The Hero Slayer is a tough 2D platformer roguelike that should entertain fans of that genre for quite some time.
