Toshiba LCDs To Use Genesis TV Controller

“We are very pleased to have been chosen again by Toshiba to support its latest LCD TV offering for the European market, where features such as integrated PAL decoding and Teletext are required,” said Raphael Mehrbians, Genesis Microchip’s senior vice president of Product Marketing. “The FLI8532 controller offers advanced video processing from Faroudja(R) and proprietary color management technologies to enable Toshiba’s HD-compatible LCD TVs to display images with film-like picture quality.”

The FLI8532 is a highly integrated, single-chip television solution for flat-panel televisions. It features Faroudja’s Emmy award-winning video decoding, deinterlacing and video enhancement technologies, whose inclusion is represented by the Faroudja DCDi Cinema(TM) brand. An integrated 3-D video decoder provides support for NTSC, PAL and SECAM standards, as well as SCART input. The integrated VBI (Vertical Blanking Interval) processor supports Teletext, Closed Captioning, V-chip and other VBI applications. The FLI8532 also features proprietary technologies to improve the performance of Liquid Crystal Displays for television applications including LCD Overdrive to reduce motion smearing artifacts and an Active Color Management (ACM-II(TM)) system to improve the dynamic color range. An embedded microcontroller and versatile On-Screen-Display (OSD) facilitate rapid product design of a global television chassis.

Dolby Labs is already at the forefront of HDR video tech with its Dolby Vision format, but that doesn't mean the company is resting on its laurels. So it makes sense that TV manufacturers and Dolby Labs would want to understand these lighting conditions in order to adjust the settings to compensate. Most smartphones already do something similar to enhance readability, but in the case of HDR content, it can make the difference between seeing all of the details in a scene and not.
