Backup your photos to Amazon! Cloud Drive Photos for iOS is here with automatic uploads

These days every company is scrambling to make a name for itself in cloud storage, and Amazon is no exception. Building on its Cloud Drive business, Amazon has released a new app that will make it easy for iPhone users to automatically sync their photos to the cloud.

Photos will be saved to Amazon Cloud Drive in the background and synced between the iPhone, Andoid phones, Kindle Fire, PCs, and Macs. As is standard for cloud storage services, Amazon offers 5GB of free storage to new users and 10GB of extra space can be had for $10 per year. If you need more, you can grab 50GB for $25 and 100GB for $50.

The Cloud Drive app for iOS is essentially the same as the Android version that came out last November. Aside from automatic uploads, users can choose to upload an entire photo album manually. You can also upload photos from your computer to access them on your mobile device.

“Photos are central to the daily lives of our customers,” said Director of Cloud Drive Russell Dicker. “The Cloud Drive Photos app, now available for iPhone and iPod touch, lets customers use Amazon Cloud Drive Photos regardless of which platform they choose. They’ll also rest easy knowing that their entire photo collection is protected with automatic back-up to the cloud.”

Cloud Drive Photos is free in the App Store right now and requires iOS 6 or later.

Apple’s Live Photos feature is a great way to add some extra charm to your normal, everyday iPhone pictures. Enabled by default, Live Photos automatically records and integrates the 1.5-second interval before and after you hit the shutter button on your iOS device. The end result is a lightly animated image, which can easily be shared via iMessage or a Shared Photo Album with any friend of family member with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

You’ll also be able to share a static version of any picture captured as a Live Photo. But if you’d like to enchant your Windows and Android device buddies with your moving pics, you’re better off converting that Live Photo into a video or animated GIF. This is also the best way to future-proof your Live Photos against any down-the-line compatibility issues the Live Photo format might face from non-Apple hardware.

A new year means new software updates. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 18 could be the “biggest” update for iOS in quite some time, though this is something we tend to hear every year. I’m not sure any iOS update has been as big as the jump from iOS 6 to iOS 7, as a lot of the features and design changes since then could be considered iterative.

Personally, I think the last “biggest” iOS update for me was iOS 14, as it allowed for home screen widgets and app icon customization without a jailbreak for the first time. Since then, there haven’t been as many new features in iOS that have been game changers for me, but this is all subjective. What was a big deal for me may not be the same for you, and vice versa.
