The iPhone 5 is out, but for the first time, Apple’s once-unstoppable smartphone has some serious competition. Samsung’s Galaxy S3 is the first smartphone outside the iPhone to break the control of wireless carriers and be released simultaneously on all four major U.S. carriers, and U.S. Cellular. It has even sold more than 20 million units in its first 100 days of availability, an unheard of number outside of the iPhone. It’s one of the best examples of what Google’s Android operating system has to offer.
So which phone is right for you if you’re struggling to make up your mind?
To help you make a decision you’ll live with for the next two years, we’ve distilled our extensive hands-on time with both devices down into the ultimate iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S3 comparison. We’ve declared winners and losers in 16 categories that make or break a phone, but don’t think finding the right phone is as easy as keeping score. Which phone belongs in your pocket will ultimately depend on which factors are most important to you. Read on to see how Apple and Samsung’s finest stack up in this battle of the titans.
Make sure to check out our full Apple iPhone 5 review and Samsung Galaxy S III review for more information on each phone. Note that the review scores do not reflect their positions relative to each other, due to timing. The S3 came out months before the iPhone 5, when its primary competition was more dated Android devices and the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 must be compared to legacy iPhones and newer Android phones, like the S3.
Design and construction
Crafting a beautiful, pocketable, durable phone isn’t easy, and Apple still knows how to do it better than anyone. The iPhone 5 doesn’t change much from the iPhone 4, but it remains the best-looking phone on the market today, and the best built. Apple has improved the scratch and shatter resistance of its glass, and used more aluminum in the frame, making the iPhone 5 much more durable than its predecessors and Samsung’s polycarbonate (a durable type of plastic) Galaxy S3.
The iPhone 5 is also suspiciously lightweight for the materials it uses, weighing only 112 grams, less than the S3′s 133 gram weight. This could be due to the thinness of Apple’s phone, which matches the Droid Razr’s impressive 7.6mm depth, but without any camera bump. The S3 is also an impressive 8.6mm thick. For reference, the iPhone 4 and 4S were about 9.3mm thick, which set a benchmark for its time.
Drop and shatter tests (like this one) seem to be unanimously coming out in favor of the iPhone 5. Even after painful five- or six-foot drops, most iPhone 5 units have only minor dings in the aluminum frame. They somehow escape screen shattering far longer than the S3, despite Samsung’s inclusion of Gorilla Glass, which is known for its durability.
Winner: iPhone 5
Feel
Though it’s difficult to argue that Apple’s phone is built better than Samsung’s, when it comes to comfort, the Galaxy S3 puts up a strong fight. Samsung has been tweaking the size, shape, and button layouts of its phones several times a year for several years now. The Galaxy S3 is a result of consumer migration toward phones with larger screens. Despite being significantly wider and longer than the iPhone 5, the S3 is more comfortable to hold and use due to its button placement. By placing the power and volume buttons on the sides toward the middle of the phone, users can more naturally press both buttons, interact with the screen, and reach the Home, Back, and Menu buttons on the device. The iPhone 5 is still a comfortable device, but Apple has not adjusted the placement of its power button to match the fact that it is now a longer (not wider) phone.
Of course, those with Andre the Giant hands will undoubtedly lean toward the S3 and those with more petite digits will gravitate toward the iPhone 5. Still, we’re going to give this one to Samsung for somehow making a phone with a 4.8-inch screen completely usable and comfortable to hold. Perhaps more comfortable than the world’s leading smartphone when it comes to two-handed typing and other select activities.
Winner: Galaxy S3
Screen quality
The iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 light up an age-old (that’s two years in tech time) debate over which screen technologies offer the best picture quality. Since the introduction of the ‘Retina’ (high resolution) display in the iPhone 4, other smartphone manufacturers have been scrambling to create screens that can match Apple’s impressive 326 pixel-per-inch phone screens, which are based on high-end IPS LCD screen technology. To counter Apple, Samsung has gone with AMOLED, a variation on OLED technology. We’ve already compared the difference between LCD and AMOLED screens. The S3 might be the best implementation of AMOLED we’ve seen yet, retaining the deep blacks possible with OLED (each pixel is lit up separately, so black pixels have no backlight behind them at all).
Though we really love AMOLED’s strengths, those of you with the sharpest eyes might prefer the iPhone 5. According to in-depth tests performed by DisplayMate, it’s better calibrated and gets brighter. We can’t argue. Though OLED may be the future of displays, Apple’s good old LCD takes the crown today.
Winner: iPhone 5
User interface
Despite ongoing lawsuits over the similarities between Apple and Samsung products, the differences between the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 user interfaces are quite stark.

Visually, it’s hard to argue against Apple. iOS is simple, easy to use, and full of fun animations. No other touch operating system is so pleasant and enthralling (at least, at first) to learn and operate. With the Galaxy S3, Samsung is trying really hard to make Android a more consistent and beautiful experience, but its attempts feel contrived and, at times, misguided. In many ways, the Galaxy S3 might be a better phone if Samsung had left Android alone. Google’s recent Android interfaces may not be as bright as iOS, but they do have some personality. Samsung’s phone does not.
Winner: iPhone 5

This is just garbage
Screen – Tie. S3 has a Higher Resolution, bigger screen…but iPhone 5 looks a little better cause of the smaller screen.
User Interface – are you joking? You can fully customize the S3 UI to your liking. What can you do with IOS6? Nothing.
Audio/Video – Tie easy, Even though the front facing camera is a higher res on the S3.
Camera – Is someone forgetting about the Purple haze when taking pictures? My friend with his new iPhone 5 sure hasn’t.
Hardware specs – Just the expandable memory in the S3 is enough to give it a win. Like c’mon, up to 64gb of extra memory per card. microSD limit is software based on the S3, so updates could give it a boost in usable microSD space.
Voice assistant – Tie.
So how is that new iPhone 5 that Apple sent you? I’m sure it’s working well.
And you are paid by Samsung.
Gotta agree. Awarding the iPhone the win in customization based solely on third party cases (ooooh, you can put a sparkly bedazzled case on your iPhone!) versus the inifinitely more customizable home screens of the actual phone (GS3) is downright ludicrous. The category was “customization” not who has more cute teenage girl type cases available from third parties. That “win” by Apple stinks of a compromise when it was realized that this would end in a tie at best. PS, I agree with others. The GS3 pics look better to me as well. BTW, you forgot one VERY important category (even more so than your sparkly case category): PRICE. Sincerely, a current iPhone 4S owner about to buy a GS3 for $80 instead of an iPhone 5 for $200
BTW, one more thing I forgot to include. The very reason I’m here reading this in the first place is because I was trying to decide whether to go GS3 or iPhone 5. I was reading some comparisons but I can’t take the obviously biased ones. Siri? Are you kidding me? She almost NEVER answers a question correctly when you ask anything beyond the most basic of commands. If you ask her what time it is or what is the weather, she’s fine. Just try asking what your favorite player’s batting average was for 2012 or even an easy one like “what is the most popular movie in America right now”? She will either give you a generic wikipedia page for the athlete (assuming she can even comprhend the name), and as for the movie, she’ll list theaters in your area. Whenever I even ask it to read me the last text from someone and it says “no new texts”! So basically, Siri is so dumb, it can only read new texts or compose them. Sorry, but no Apple fanboyism here, even as a current owner. I have to stay objective.
how could you embarrass yourself by saying that the iPhone’s screen size makes the screen look better? That proved how intelligent you are. The iPhone’s screen looks better because it IS better. You cant blame the size of the screen as an excuse. Voice assistant is equal? Are you serious?! Are you really going to lie to yourself? The voice control on the S3 doesnt even come close to the first version of Siri. And now Siri is even smarter than ever. Purple haze? Does your friend imagine things or need glasses or need laser eye surgery? Even my 3GS doesnt have a purple haze and neither does the 5. Ill admit that the size of the S3 is fantastic for movies though. When has Android ever made an update that increases the storage capacity for microSD? And when has Android even made more updates than Apple? If you want more space on the iPhone, just download N2Drive. Its a free app that gives you 1TB of free storage. Trust me, a microSD will never go up to 1TB in the next 60 years. Im assuming Samsung has paid you to type false comments with convincing words as a desperate attemp to make the S3 seem better. Dont be retarded, Apple has defeated every phone company year after year. As a smartphone collector who owns every Nokia, Apple, HTC, Samsung, and Motorola smartphone, the iPhone 5 is the best overall. I pity your foolish judgement.
The AMOLED screen on the S3 produces darker blacks and better colors compared to the RETINA (IPS) display, the only thing that the IPS has over the AMOLED is brightness. The iphone looks better because of the higher PPI of the smaller screen.
Google voice is just as advanced as Siri, look at how well Apple did their map system…you’re a complete fan boy if you think siri is so much better.
Purple has exists because of the sapphire crystal causing a purple lens flare, it well documented so go look it up.
You can get anything bigger than a 64gb MicroSD, 128GB wont be available on the market for another year, and then it’s just a software limitation which can be updated via firmware.
N2Drive??? Unless you’re special and have app that no one else has you’re dreaming. There is no way for an app to “magically” produce 1tb of storage on a device. Unless you’re talking about online storage which is already available and isn’t the same, even remotely.
You call yourself “THEPHONEKING” and you know nothing about the current technology. Pretty sad….
Nothing about current technology? Your pathetic assumption proves your stupidity. If you don’t believe that app exists why don’t you go to the App Store and check it out? I have it on my iPad for proof. A fan boy, you say? Don’t be silly, I only concluded it was better after testing it in various ways. And Google Voice is an app that allows you to call and text with another number that you choose and register for free. I can’t believe you can’t even get the name of the voice control Samsung uses. You’re the sad one here.
I just looked like last time for “N2Drive”, no results. Like i said before, you can’t magically make a device increase the amount of flash memory that’s onboard, even if you click your heels together 3 times and wish it. If you have an iPhone with 16gb you get 16gb (minus OP System/Files)…that’s it. Cloud storage doesn’t count because every smart phone has cloud storage. Sorry it’s called S voice, i typed the wrong name, oh no….i just didn’t care to look it up. Siri is a catchy name and you don’t forget it.
You still call yourself “THEPHONEKING”, guess what, you have no credibility anywhere. You can call yourself steve jobs, no one cares lol
ThePhoneKing is just a username. Why are you taking something so trivial so seriously? You already said this twice. Even I don’t care if I’m called Steve Jobs. At least MY username isn’t something dumb like huhh. I’ll send you a screenshot of the app if you like.
I agree with ThePhoneKing you are a dildo
Why do you keep buying all of these other smartphone brands if the iPhone is so superior? Doesn’t seem too smart which makes me wonder about your judgment regarding the iPhone. And…anyone who has to call some one a “retard” because they disagree with something…in my mind loses al credibility anyway.
I buy other smartphones for testing to see which is better. Then I sell the bad ones and keep the good ones. Even your should be able to understand that.
IPHONE 5 is BETTER
face it
IOS6 you cant change it because it already amazing
camera is crystal literally
who really buys a 64gb memory card
hello SIRI
of-course the IPHONE 5 works
WHY would it not?
Sarcasm in writing c’mon
No it’s not
You’re an idiot
IOS 6 is the same as every IOS in the past, even windows has changed over the years.
Camera has sapphire lens which get a purple lens flare
I have purchased a 64gb card and so have many more have too.
SIRI is the same as google voice…there is no difference.
No saying the iphone doesn’t work, obviosly it does but people praise it for being perfect…it’s not.
You’re still an idiot and it was very hard to write like an idiot….
Look huhh everyone disagrees with you so just stop asshole!
Did you take your avatar picture with the iPhone?
im with u on this one i own both and can honestly say the s3 wins this round by far.
apple have been over rated for a long time just like the old nokias of theire time samsung have surpassed them. But do enjoy both
I have used both phones.i am not biased towards any of them as i like both of them.this I write this from my own experience
why you would consider buying iphone?: QUALITY PHONE WHICH WORKS
if you prefer a phone that works fluid and fast without much tweaking and customization, premium h/w & s/w design, real good quality apps,3d games that are not available in android, quick software updates to all ios devices as soon as it is available, great support and service, easy communication(imessage, facetime.) and synchronization of your songs, apps, movies across various apple devices then iphone suits you.
what may be the problems with iphone?:
no external sd card you are limited to what apple gives,no user replacable batteries, itunes crap-you have to sync your songs, apps and movies and also convert to compatible format to use it with the device is a big headache(yeah i know there is an app that play without needing conversion but still itunes sync sucks ;) ),no easy real bluetooth file transfer, limited customization compared to android(-this is the game changer in people’s opinion),restricted to apple apps to use as your default.(you have to use safari to open links in mail even if u like to open in chrome-now apple maps in ios6)
why you would consider buying android phone?: I WANT MY PHONE TO BE MY PHONE
Android mobile is highly customizable:more widgets, use various homescreen launchers with different transitions to fit your likes, advanced and neat notifications than ios.android phones(mostly) has facilities for adding external sd card and user replaceable battery according to your preference.like ios you dont need any middle-ware(itunes) to transfer the files to the device.transferring files is easy in android.open any files in any app you like.android is much open than ios and are available in various variety and prices.(ie)more choices to choose your best.
what may be the problems with android?:
Android is more prone to crashes and build quality may not impress all.To attain full potential of your device you may need to tweak and customize that may frustrate some users.Default interface that comes with ur android may come with some crapwares that takes ununecessary memory.you cannot uninstall most of them until you root your phone(which obviously voids ur warranty).Software update is hell in android, some new phone may recieve update, some may not.older phones lack support and service and so you have to depend on xda developer for custom rom with newer version for ur phone.apps and games that are in android has lower quality than apps in iphone.most iphone apps are not available in android.
rooting and jailbreaking:
you can jailbreak ur iphone to get the lost features(winterboard themes, transition effects, enhanced notifications, bluetooth functionality).but I feel like fluidity and original speed of iphone is degraded and apps starts to crash often.on the other hand rooting enables change of custom roms and kernel which can increase the performance and battery life of android.jailbreak and rooting for the most part is easy but voids warranty.so be careful
this is just my opinion.ur opinion may vary.thanks for reading such a long comment.
FANBOY AAALL THE WAY.. u couldn’t tell the difference between blurry images taken with the iphone and detailed ones taken with the S3…btw, learn to focus the camera while u´re at it.
Besides, when u compare audio and video, are u really doing it? cause all i read was podcast bla bla bla…
u DIDNT really compare the quality of both devices in both depts. Mr. FANBOY
voice assistant? do u even use siri on a daily basis? really?
“Android also lets you customize ringtones, change backgrounds, add animated backgrounds, and all that jazz.”
All that jazz? look how u totally disregarded the potential of the S3 by saying “.. all that jazz” .. 1 word.. FAAANBOOOOYYYY
———————-
All in all if your current “evaluation” suits you then go for it, you must love to be locked up in itunes and basically ignoring the real potential of the phone u claim to have during the last four years.
you shouldnt be writing reviews whatsoever, not because i prefer the S3 any day over the iphone but, because with such conclusions based on your own personal preferences instead of what’s real, you give this website a TERRIBLE precedent.
So after all the bicker and fights between fanboys, i chose based on a few things, which was size, software, and speed (the three S’s). In the size catagory, the S3 is obviously a bigger screen, which is handy for someone with huge hands, but the iPhone 5 might come in handy for regular handed people. The Software catagory is tough. With two completely different softwares, theres alot to compare. I think what it boils down to is reliability VS. extra features. The IOS software will run, without a doubt, faster and less buggy than an Android phone. But what it sacrifices are the features and little things that an Android has. This means of you wanna have a phone with less options but more speed, id go Iphone 5. But the amount of customization on the Android is unparralleled. The final choice i came to was to go with the S3, for two reasons. The size of the screen is better suited for me because of my large hands, and while the iPhone screen is bigger and brighter, i couldnt sacrifice the size for that. The second was the software. Im not gonna lie, im tired of the iPhones software always being the same. If they changed it up, i would go back in a heartbeat, but everyone i know has one so I weanted to change it up. The speed and reliability of the iPhone is a great thing, but its all the same. Bottom line, its personal preference. there are things both have that the other doesnt, but dont try to force your opinions on everyone else.
Nice breakdown of how you came to your decision. I can’t disagree wit h you. Hope you like the S3!
Why did my last post not show up? This guy is wrong about a few things, that reality can disagree with. the iPhone does NOT have a larger display (or higher pixel count, just 20 PPI higher count) Secondly, I cannot see how a dual core running at 1.2 ghz (or so I have heard, if I am wrong correct me) with 1 gig of some form of DDR2, is faster than a Quad-core running at 1.5 ghz – I believe, with 2 gig of DDR3 (running at 667mhz dual channel I believe, correct me if I am wrong.) I mean I can understand the Android OS ALLOWS you to clutter up kerneling, but only a simple minded fool would allow so many parasitic apps to run at once – there is a task manager so you can shut them off at any time – that the S3′s hardware would EVER run more slowly than the iPhone 5′s
Paid Article. Biased. Period.
Paid article? Ha. By who? I was paid by Digital Trends…
have both phones both pretty awsome but i prefer samsung looks and feels better. screen way better. more storage friendly to use i phone apps is expensive and dont always function correct
quote: Visually, it’s hard to argue against Apple. iOS is simple, easy to use, and full of fun animations. No other touch operating system is so pleasant and enthralling (at least, at first) to learn and operate.
could you please explain this comment. i have both iphone 4 and galaxy s3…what ios fun animations.
Personalization:
It is a tie? Really? Because of cases and stickers? Stickers? Fast and Furious much? And you listed multiple things the SGS3 does the iPhone can’t, but somehow cases and stickers make it a tie. How about this for personalization: http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-s-iii/182566-galaxy-s-iii-screenshots-share-them-here.html
Do do not need custom roms for personalization. There are many launchers out there with tons of free themes. Widgets alone should make it win for the SGS3
Also, with Tasker, your personalize your phone to do things an iPhone user can only dream of doing.
Hardware:
Interesting how you mention iPhone’s SoC beating out the SGS3, in fact the iPhone gpu is far more powerful, but then you mention 6 hardware features the iPhone does not have. Edge should go to the SGS3. 32GB versions can max out at 96GB and 64GB variants that are coming out soon can max out at 128GB total storage.
Wow… Apple still outdone. I used to be a big supporter of Apple, but ever since Steve passed away it’s been downhill for Apple.
Downhill? How can you be sure it would have been different under Steve?
The same reason Apple stock dropped in price when there was speculation he would retire?
If you go to Youtube and watch Steve’s presentation introducing the first iPhone back in 2007, he said himself the iPhone was 5 years ahead of the curve, and he was right.
It’s 2012, 5 years later, and the competition has not only caught up, but has taken the lead, providing more powerful phones with better specs and much cheaper accessories. $30 just to hook up to equipment Apple’s already overcharged you for is not a good deal whatsoever.
Jobs isn’t around to visualize what will be around in 2017 and provide it this year. That’s the difference, maybe?
totally diased review. i have both iphone 4 and a galaxy s3. i got away from the iphone due to every incarnation being the same.
i got bored with the ui.
the galaxy feels better, looks better and i love the camera. decided if? i ever get another iphone it will be the iphone 7..nothing at the moment makes me think the next one will be better. to say the iphone has cool animations just show how much we can disregard this article and author. as johan said..free iphone gets a better review.
i am an apple fan..have the ipad, macbook pro and an imac..the phone became lame!
Will you please help me?
Being that you have apple products, how do you have your calendar and contacts automatically transfer from your imac to your galaxy? I wanted to get an iphone specifically for that purpose – but hate the new maps and smaller size. I use maps, places, calendar all the time on my galaxy….was looking to change to iphone to sinc, but really like galaxy better.
Thanks for your help.
Kelly
We paid for our iPhone. I did not get it free. There are definitely topics that will appeal to some users more than others. If you don’t care about animations and fluidity of the user interface and polish stuff like that, then ignore it. Obviously, the Galaxy will rate higher on your scale then. I am an Android and iOS user and I believe I was fair to both platforms. Android is definitely ahead on some technical issues, but not so far that the iPhone is a burden to use, most of the time.
Remember that the S3 can be flashed with all manner of ROMs once rooted (which is totally easy). The stock ROM that came with the S3 made me want to shoot myself in the eyes and pull all my fingers off at the nuckle. It was horrifyingly awkward and slow. Then I flashed Paranoid Android ROM and now I want to have sex with my phone. Every swipe of the finger is fore-play. Smooth, sexy, intuitive. Same phone, same hardware, same specs, completely different experience.
Also, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with liking a phone simply because of it’s design. Same reason you might want racing stripes on your car and pay extra for it. Doesn’t make the car go faster but you like it and that’s why you bought it. Image.
Hence although I find I can do more with my droid than my wifes iphone she thinks it’s sexy and that makes her happy. Same reason she’s still with me guess – I don’t do much but damn, I’m sexy!
See? Forget the specs. It’s actually all just about sex.
I literally laughed out lout on this one… LOLZ!
Tech-Sex. Everyone’s Doing It.
yep i got big hands but i don’t want a big screen in my pocket, but a sexy one that i might drop from 4 ft without breaking.
Really cool comparision! Just recently read the “tech specification comparison between the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 in Enolsoft blog, now Im confirmed to buy the Samsung Galaxy S3!
BOTTOM LINE: This article says the iPhone 5 is (slightly) superior. Pencils down, test over. And this is one of many articles I have read that favor the Apple device. And yet so many responses seem to be set on proving this guy wrong. Who is the expert at hand? The one writing the article or the countless bloggers who aren’t as in tune with reality. I find it funny that, had this article favored the Samsung Galaxy III- the same people would then go and write “Haha, take that Apple!” Yet since that isn’t the case, all you can come up with are lowend insults like “iSheep”, “Crapple”, and other ridiculous judgments.
Can somebody, ANYBODY, please give me a NON-biased reason as to why over 70% of the comments to this article are negative commentary about Apple? I mean it really makes no sense to me. The product works so well, easy to use. Droid provides more freedom to do…what exactly? Multi-task applications? Who really is that affecting? Jailbreaking techniques, supposed faster graphics? I haven’t been able to tell an ounce of the difference and I had an EVO for 2 years. I still think iPhone is the better phone.
But again, I need someone to explain why even after the articles have been written and the explanations mounted, why so many comment HATEFULLY against Apple’s amazing device? It’s just a mystery to me, I still donnot understand.
Android vs iOS arguments are political or religious. It’s like Republicans vs Democrats, or Lutherans vs Methodists. As for me, I like my 8GB Google Nexus 7 w/Android 4.1; I think it’s a really good value for $199. But it’s not going to replace my Verizon iPad2 3G or convince me to switch from iPhone 5 to Galaxy S3. BOTH are good products, and the S3 is an excellent copy of the iPhone. Samsung users may be hateful only because Apple won a lawsuit which they fear will make Samsung products go away. THAT’s not going to happen; more likely Samsung will have to pay royalties to Apple. That’s business, people, get over it. Life isn’t fair, and both Apple and Samsung are ref’d by the same set of rules and laws.
I agree. Articles like this do bring out the platform defenders. I attempted to be as fair and thorough as I could be. I really didn’t think the iPhone 5 would come out on top when I started, but regardless of how much “new” stuff is in it, or not, it still kept up, though I do wish it had a slightly wider screen. They both have a fair amount of pros and cons. It really comes down to what aspects you find most important.
You say the article announces the iPhone as “slightly better”, then follow with “Pencils down, Test over”! In what world does TIE assume victory in one direction or the other? In what world can one product out perform another buy 66% then be judged as a TIE? iPhone, NO freedom, NO personalization, NO external memory, restricted content, lack of support for de facto standard media formats, and currently fewer applications available.
Android is about making a product to fit the users needs. If this article supported iPhone and depicted a feature for feature victory in favor of iPhone that’s one thing. This article depicted a crippled iPhone, a victories Android, and a pathetic attempt by what is apparently an Apple owning columnist playing favorits.
I have had an S3 since launch in the UK. I have been waiting with bated breath for the past months wondering if I had made the right decision to ‘buy now’ at the time rather than wait for the iPhone 5. In all honesty, the only reason I can see for going for the iPhone 5 over the S3 is the premium build quality. OS is down to personal preference. Performance, App’s, screen quality, etc. are much of a muchness or as near as dammit as makes no difference. However, there are basics which are important to me which the iPhone doesn’t have – e.g. removable battery, memory expansion and, for the difference it may or not make, my life is intrinsically linked in to the Google eco-system.
There are fanboys on both sides and both are equally as bad as each other. IMO, the iPhone 4 was a game-changer and everyone else was playing catch-up. The iPhone 5 is no doubt a brilliant phone but, as I see it, it just doesn’t have enough of an edge to make it the one to go for an automatic decision; especially, when it is likely to require a major cash put-down for most users contracts (the S3 is free on all but the cheapest contracts in the UK).
For all Androiders, Pay Attention!
APPLE is the BOSS ! Why the HELL you compare every new smartphone whether its Motorola, LG, Samsung or HTC with Apple’s phone? You don’t compare Samsung vs LG vs HTC.. Because you know Apple is the father of smartphones… He gave the concept of smartphones! He gave the concept of touch screen when people would think you a stupid of thinking a phone without a keypad! He gave the concept of Apps! and told you how to make a phone without any folders! Apple gave you a digital personal talking assistant introducing the Hollywood like Artificial Intelligence like never anybody has done! Now these companies copy the same ideas and think they are going big? You have the example of Nokia.. Where is Nokia gone who was once the King of cellphones? Because he didn’t adopted Android…! And what about Samsung? I still remember Samsung Star’s super ANNOYING software… If there was no Google… All these so called companies would have been defaulted by now… All these companies + Google + Microsoft together always competing against Apple ?? and still Apple is the true King of Kings – standing alone without any other company’s help ! He makes everything with its own resources. He does not have a camera made of SONY, cellphone made by ERICSSON, software provided by GOOGLE. Tomorrow, Samsung launches Galaxy S4 with advanced than iPhone features after noticing those of iPhone 5 and you will forget Galaxy S3 and will directly compare S4 with Apple’s iPhone.. Why is this so… 100′s of cellphones of all of these companies launching new models everyday comparing with ONE company who launches ONE cellphone after ONE year ????? If there was no Apple, there would be NO Galaxy S3, instead, you would have still a sick slider or flipper by Samsung or Nokia cellphone with an annoying useless software that could only make calls!
Just watch before you compare!! Apple is TRUE LEGEND !!
It’s because of the Apple and Android fanboys that the comparisons are made.
Anybody who can’t look at the specs of both phones and admit Samsung has a better product this round is only deceiving themselves.
iOS 6 cripples the true potential of the hardware in the iPhone.
The fact Android runs on multiple hardware configurations can sometimes lead to software problems, but those bugs can be corrected, especially if the app is open source.
Apple is better for people who don’t want to think or learn anything about computers other than how to open iTunes and connect their phone to their iMac with an iCord.
Android is better for people who want to learn how to do things with their devices nobody’s ever done before, who want to push the limits of their hardware, and customize their experience.
Does iPhone 5/ iPad 5 or whatever support Macromedia Flash, JAVA, XML, and media players that allow formats such as .mkv .avi .wmv or .mp4 etc? Does it support .ogg .wma .flac etc? If not, they might as well be the cheap-o pre-paid burner cell in my desk. So seriously, can it support any of those formats? What formats CAN it use that are not apple-owned (.aac and .mov do NOT count, for ANYTHING let alone for a smartphone…)
until apple allows drag & drop for files for whatever I want and use multiple email accounts with multiple signatures they’re blowing smoke no matter how big the screen is. like the ipad. wonderful to spend money on applicaions that still dont work that well, download more games….. but what about utility? guess you want to use the “shopping hardware” that apple makes. that’s it. simple. for business I am certain that S-III is a massively superior choice. errrr…. and you can even use flash on the S-3. apple is nice for spending money. the S-3 might actually make you some money. game set match
Wow. Whats up with all the ties. Choose a winner for each section. And the hardware??? Quad core vs Dual core, NFC vs no NFC, 1.9mp front cam vs .9mp, and Expandable memory for S3 and none for Iphone5? And this is a tie?? WTF is this?
Took the words right out of my mouth! Not to mention Android screen is 3/4″ bigger with a HIGHER resolution at 1280×720 vs iPhone with 1136×640, and a longer battery life. The only thing iPhone won on was the weight at 22g lighter, the aluminum body, and TECHNICALLY has a 64GB internal memory option which really doesn’t mean jack $h17 when you take into count that the Android supports 96GB when you add a 64GB memory card.
In summery:
Android and iPhone tied in THREE categories.
Android WON in EIGHT categories
iPhone ONLY won in TWO categories.
Tie my ass, you can tell what phone the author of this article owns.
One more journalist that got him self a free iPhone for writing good stuff about a mediocre product. Strange that a OS that can’t even play the most usual file formats beats the one that play them all… personalization? can you even do that in iPhone? With no widgets the only thing you can do is to change background… And can you really change sms-signal (to you own) on the iPhone? A tie on the appstores??? There is only one on iPhone and many on android, still is the play better than iTunes. And user interface? If you can’t do anything and have a boring bookshelf. Does that make you win this? Yes iOS is simpler, but it also has so much limitations so it is just plain boring. So conclusion: This was apples last chance to beat Samsung and they failed big time. The iPhone 5 is about the same class as the S2, but with the same limitations that the S2 does not have. So Don’t buy…
I’m going to start of by saying this i am not bias towards either one, with that said lets start it off
i have had all the iphones from the first one from att to the iphone 4 and i loved them even though to do what i wanted i had to jailbreak it (which apple went to court trying to make it illegal and lost lost lol). and that just goes to show what kind of people they really are. People want to talk about quality yes the iphone does feel very sturdy but did people forget that when the iphone 4 first came out when you held it a certain way the signal cut out and then steve jobs had the nerve to say your not holding it right, give me a break come on now. that’s not quality. On that note, if the iphone is so strong why do all the people i know have a case around it, i know i did, an (otter box) which made the phone feel very fat. Yes siri is a great feature no doubt there but google is great also and what was the main web search on iphone, Google. But anyhow this is the iphone 5 vs galaxy s3. I was going to wait for the iphone 5 to come out but i ended up buying the galaxy s3 and i am glad i did hands down and this is why. 1. I bought the s3 for $200 for the 16 gig version and spent 50 dollars for a 64 gig mini sd card which i now i have an 80 gig phone for $250 which is awesome to say the least which trumps the iphone 5 in price hands down. 2. when it comes to the screen s3 wins hands down 4.8 inch vs 4 in there is no comparison there, look at all the real estate. 3. There are so many features the s3 has the iphone doesn’t, i can just hook up my s3 to my computer and transfer what ever i want to it and its that simple in order to do that in the iphone i had to go to itunes which now i know is a real pain in the a** to say the lease. 4. Connectivity!!! I can hook up my 1 tb hdd to my samsung and transfer what i want to it is no problem i don’t hardly even need my laptop now. Plus if you are a gamer like i am you can hook up your ps3 controller to it np and its nice to have that 4.8 in screen to see to. Now like they said about the s3 being more flimsy vs. the iphone in all actuality i have to agree with that in a sense (but i watched a drop test on youtube between the 2 and the iphone didn’t do any better than the s3 all in all) but i put an aluminum case on my s3 and it only cost me $12 and i would have done the same with my iphone 5.
i could go on and on about this but here is my verdict if anyone really cares.
So there you have it. IMO the samsung s3 vs the iphone 5 the winner is the s3 hands down and i am very happy with my choice.
dude thats a lot of cool features that I have not considered I have a nexus one and its still awesome running gingerbread. It’s not super fast but I do a ton of tinkering with it. I got it from a friend as a gift and I have done a ton of stuff with it. my brother has a iphone 4 and bricked it pretty easily when he was trying to transfer photos from his phone to pc. I have never had any problems and I modded the shit out of it if I messed it up I can easily just factory reset.
I want an s3 but I really think I am going to wait for the next nexus those phones have always been the easiest to mod. Hopefully they put an sd card slot in their next one nothing better than a completely editable filesystem. If you are gong to
You know what, I usually keep my mouth closed when dealing with people who dont understand anything about technology nor predictive theory, but today is the day. I can no longer standby while you Ifools constanstly bicker that apple is great, and there products are innovative. You people would just honestly buy a rehashed product that doesnt include not one new form of tech from a company that copies others, sues others over stupid findings, isnt made in America, doesnt give user control over said device, and actually steals ideas from competitors and rewraps it in a beautiful box as if they have created it.
Honestly, thank you man. I haven’t seen anything significant in this iPhone 5 and I am really happy that I bought the S3 15 days ago without waiting for this cheat to be released. Apple just trying to laugh on customers and now I understand why they filed cases against Samsung, because they knew when S3 was released that their product will struggle against the S3. I am not an expert and honestly I like smaller screens but the S3 is fine in screen size. iPhone 5 release date is not smart at all and they do it after all rivals released amazing devices with lower prices…
i’m also switching to samsung too, fed up of iphone monopoly. i think because of what we saw in iphone 4 we need a revamp of the design of the case of the phone and different design of the icons or desktop of the phone to give the iimpression that its new. For me this phone is too similar its too identical. the camera would have to be 12mp for me to be excited about iphohe. they should have not only equalised with the others but LEAD them. they havent worked hard enough. its like they need to draw out the technology to cling on to what they got from steve jobs before embarking on their own ideas. they need to stop monopolising their products, you can see why they only have small market share in computers / mac. they need to make them more affordable and compeitive that’s how all businesses operate EXCEPT apple.
apple IS leading — leading from behind.
Kind of like Obama!
i own the Galaxy S3 and needless to say i love it. the biggest problem i have had with my phone is expecting the iphone 5 to come along and stomp all over it like apple tend to do but it has to be said apple has not done what apple usually do with this one, its a little underwhelming, theres no doubt it will be a lovely item to hold in the hand but theres just too much black apce around the screen you just feel could have been…screen. the fact its 4 inch naturally means it probably wont be as slick on the internet as the S3 ( lets face it the bigger screen and keyboard is what means laptops and computers are still around ). All we know of the processor really is its supposedly twice as fast as the iphone 4s which is dated now either way in regards to raw power so its expected. it just all seems a bit wow wee so what does it do to make me wanna change from my S3. which is cheaper, available months ago and still seems to outdo the 5 on raw specs. not to mention a booming app scene which must be utterly close to the apple app scene by now.
I was willing to wait for iPhone 5 in order to buy my first smartphone but then 15 days ago I decided to go check in the store and the guy working there has both the S3 and iPhone 4S and we all were expecting the iPhone 5 and he told me, look I am buying to you and I make money anyways putting you in a 2 years contract with any carrier in Sweden for any phone you select but my advice is to buy the S3 not because it is from Samsung but because it runs Android and not to wait for the iPhone 5 and it turned he is right and I am really happy now with S3 I bought and soon it will have the Jelly Bean. S3 is superior in any comparison if you are not biased and anyways everyone has his own opinion but I am satisfied with my choice now…
remember that a “plastic” shell will always give better WIFI performance than apples aluminum ones
Yeah but um iPhone is max 100Mbps and S3 is 21 Mbps max. Their is a huge difference. Plus on wifi my speedtest has been over 20Mbps. That makes the S3 look bad. It is all preference. I’d prefer a nice hard body(for my iphone, though for myself would be great). Summed up the shell really is not an issue.
If you look at the iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4s the iPhone 5 max speed is 42Mbps so there really is no creditably on this.
Thats is really confusing. It says 100 Mbps.
Theoretical speed. In theory I could spontaniously tranform into a pumpkin, highly unlikely though.
well looks as if someone needs to do alittle fact checking! I have screenshots of my S3 speedtest while on AT&T 4GLTE in Allen Texas with a ping time of 73ms download speed of 65.45Mbps and upload of 13.21Mbps! There is not one Technical Spec where the ANY iphone beats the Samsung SIII period. End of story. There is no comparision unless you put it up against phones released 1.5-2 years ago and even then they fall short in most areas. The only reason apple filed suit was because they are so far behind they have no other choice! Im sure the sheep will be lined up for their fleecing come the 19th! Oh and when ios6 is release enjoy the new maps program! As you know they “dumped” google and “invented” the most killer map app on the planet lmao! Behind the curtins the only thing they did was change whom they get their map data from! Oh yes, now they get their data from str8 from TOMTOM!
Okay buddy slow down there a bit. I think you need to do “alittle” fact checking yourself. But it’s petty to point out your not so readable grammar. The iPhone 5 has near identical specs to the S3 but features a smaller screen (which is a downfall for people). Otherwise these phones are pretty much the same thing. You need to deflate your fanboyism a bit and take a look at the facts, not the “facts”. You’re no different from any apple sheep in what you’re saying.
Dude really the s3 has a quad core the new iPhone 5 has dual core hello and the s3 is 4 months old it’s clear that apple is behind end of story lol it’s on paper it’s not a opinion
Quad core? I was told last night at a Sprint store that the quad core s3 is only available in Europe.
I get 36.51Mbps with my S3, give me your email and I’ll send you a screen shot…
Apple is TRUE LEGEND !!!
You talk about finish what about the dodgy anodising on the case ??
3 words. Biased. Period.
You said it.
Yeah. I said it.
Ha. It’s always funny when people think I’m biased. I have primarily been an Android user for 4 years now, but I’ve used iPhones and Windows Phones as well. I call it like I see it. No bias except for what looks good, feels right, and works properly.
Don’t see the humour in here.
this article will need a major overhaul when jellybean arrives, and in my opinion the galaxy s3 lost out on some things it really shouldnt have which is unfair, as great as the iphone 5 is turning out to be i cant help but feel a few catagories were fudged to give the iphone the edge, future updates??? personalisation??? i mean come on at the very minimum a tie should have been awarded for personalisation as we all cant argue android is very flexible compared to ios and future updates again i think should have gone to the s3 for now at least considering a big software upgrade is very close already and ios is not due an upgrade at all as of now. and then once jellybean is released voice assistance will need to be re-evaluated because google now should give siri a much better run for its money.
i like the article but it simply seems some catagories have been smudged badly in apples favour sorry to say but digital trends get it together.
Once I play around with Jelly Bean on S3 and its different, I’ll be happy to revise. I’m not traditionally an iPhone guy, actually. I thought the S3 would win out, but the iPhone turned out to have more processing power and a nicer screen than I thought. As for categories like Personalization, it could really be split into 2 categories. The S3 wins on Software personalization and the iPhone wins on Phone hardware personalization. But even if I split them, it wouldn’t change the math, not that the math really matters. None of these categories are weighted.
i understand but weighted or not its still a catagory which should have edged the other way in my view for the simplest of reasons, those being software personalisation is much stronger than hardware personalisation because software is constantly altered by the user as time goes on because its just what you do, in the case of hardware its simply buy a case and stick with it for all of time :) besides at this moment in time again the s3 should theoretically be matching the iphone 5 in available cases anyway its been out much longer surely the iphone 5 does not have more choice. maybe the iphone 4 ofcourse but thats not the case here. thanks for the reply i do understand your points however i do not completely agree with the weighted arguement because a lot of people will skip your article and look at the result
I was surprised that the author didn’t create new category for earbud and connector.
well i would win that one hands down because i own sony mdr-ex1000, dont use them with my galaxy s3 i should say but still id happily pair them with the s3 and put them up against those trash buds lol
Earbuds went into the Audio category, though I haven’t been thoroughly impressed with Apple’s new Earpods.
How does the iPhone win on hardware personalization when the accessories cost hundreds of dollars more, you’re limited to Apple accessories only in many instances, and it doesn’t even have a micro-SD slot or a removable battery?
I’m trying to understand what you mean by hardware personalization. I do realize this is an older article, but this just doesn’t even make sense.
Samsung Galaxy S III is the most powerful as of now. No more no Less!!! ^_^
I will never stoop into the iphone world. They are too over-rated and not to mention that you have to be locked into apples outrageous contract agreements. I own a Galaxy S3 and I love everything about it. The speed is great, has good on phone storage, a ton of memory so your apps can open and operate on the fly, great camera,’good music sound (especially when you have a good set of ear buds) as it is the loudest and clearest of any smart phone I ever owned. Plus to me it truly operates as a smart phone as it has all of the motion activated features. Like if your texting someone all you have to do is put your galaxy to your ear and it will automatically call them. You can use motion features for all different kinds of apps and it makes using your galaxy s3 more fun and easy. Lets see if the iphone 5 can do that. Oh yeah and my Galaxy s3 runs on Androids Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 with a update to jelly bean coming out soon. I have nothing bad to say about my Galaxy S3, good job samasung qnd good ridance Iphone 5.
Interesting comment. Actually having used both iPhones and Android devices for significant periods of time (several years on iPhone and several years on Android) I think it boils down to the following: If you want to tinker (and you must to get a usable device) , then Android is the OS for you. If you want a phone that works out of the box then iPhone is for you (can’t tinker much). To elaborate with specifics, this last go round I switched from a iPhone 4 to the new Samsung Galaxy S3 (both Verizon). Love the larger screen, though at almost 50, it is starting to get to the point that I would need to carry a 10″ tablet to be able to see well, so the lure of a larger screen didn’t translate into much of an increase in usability. Young wipper snappers will probably appreciate the larger screen. Right off the bat, VZW has chosen to install so many annoying nags (like the wifi constant nag) that I was compelled to root the phone to remove and configure things. Secondly, Samsung’s attempt to force usage of Music Hub etc was really annoying especially since the app is constantly prompting for updates and the auto update check box doesn’t appear to work for this app. The greatest source of frustration is the operation of the phone (while using a bluetooth headset). You make a call, lock the screen, and then randomly durring the call, the screen decides to unlock. Have tried with several other headsets and the phone performs the same. This is really troublesome as one of the buttons is to disconnect the headset and it frequently gets activate while on the call.
On the plus side, there is no comparison on speed. The Galaxy is blazing fast on LTE and has made it impossible for me to return to the slow iPhone 4. I am anticipating that the iPhone 5 should be on par with the Galaxy and will make it a much better user experience than the Galaxy.
Bottom line, if you want to change the OS, tinker and fuss, then the Galaxy is your phone. If you want to purchase a well polished, functional and well configured phone that doesn’t require constant tinkering, then I would recommend purchasing the iPhone (I am assuming that the iPhone 5 follows in the tradition of previous models in regards to polish and that ios 6 is as bug free as previous releases).
The best, most helpful, and unbiased comment.
This should be available to all potential buyers.
Applefans! Brethren! Watcha say about this…
Features/Specs Iphone 5 doesn’t have that other handsets already offer:
Iphone 5 has…
No NFC
No Radio (non data)
No Real Multi-Tasking (2 or 3 major apps running at the same time)
No SD Card Slot
No Burstshot (Camera feature)
No Best Photo (Camera feature)
No Concurrent Voice and data LTE support
No water, dust, and scratch free exterior
No Customizations
No HD Screen
No 3D Screen
Features/Specs that iphone 5 has that they copied from other phones that had it first
Panorama (Camera feature)
Simultaenous HD image and video recording
4G LTE
Video Call over Network
Notifications
Now look at all of these technologies that iphone 5 lacks and copied from other flagships…
Tim Cook’s Apple is a hypocrite…they claim to innovate but as you can see Apple now is the one behind in technology…
Apple points fingers at others and shout: “They copied us”! Hey Tim Cook and Applefans! Take a look at all the tech you COPIED…
Before you acuse… take a look at yourself!
My iphone 4s is an iphone…the best one there is…
Iphone 5 is not an iphone…it is a NO phone hahahaha! ENOUGH SAID!
Apple iPhone 5 is a bit disappointing Apple could have developed the best smartphone on the planet instead they choose too keep the specs to nothing amazing and gave it not a true HD display what a joke Apple need to step up if they want to compete
and by the way with the iphone 5 looking bigger than the samsung s3 is totally bias get real digital trends can we have the truth on this matter
Totally agree can you make the Apple phone look any bigger lol!
Now that the iPhone finally has a 4″ screen and LTE, it’s actually the first version since Android went mainstream that I’d consider buying; however, iOS is still too restrictive and I’d have to find a way to load the Android OS onto it instead.
And can someone please explain to me how a “leading” tech company is just now including voice guided turn-by-turn navigation and panoramic photo shooting into their phones?! My non-smart phone Samsung Instinct from 2008 had integrated voice guided nav! My HTC smartphone from 2010 had panoramic shooting. Apple’s hardware is up to date, but the OS is the real hindrance.
owned an iphone 4 n switched to the s3 yesterdy.. must say tz waaaayyy better n obviously the best ever ive used so far.. :)
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never owned an Apple product. I’ve owned several Samsung and even Androids. Really those are the main competitors out there right now. Apple has definitely done better…and working for a major wireless competitor, I have to say I prefer working with Samsung Galaxy S phones. There are some good points on both…the iPhone 5 is a little disappointing compared to some of the previous models. Apple broke into it first, but it feels like they’re resting on their laurels now. And, they rely far too much on brand loyalty, hype, and consumers desire for what is supposed to be the biggest and the best. Right now, the S3 has the edge…
My iPhone 4 is better than galaxy s3, iOS is by far the best OS in the world , this is the first phone I’ve had that hasn’t bored me after 6 months, I can say it will never bore me it’s pure class, Samsung don’t even make there own OS which is why an iPhone is far superior , iOS is seamless , utter brilliance, my old lady bought an s2 and yeah it’s a good phone and if there was no such thing as iPhone I’m sure s3 would be best but as it stands there is such a thing, I’m writin this on my ipad3 at the min, another fantastic device from the biggest company in the world!!! Ha, mint.
P.S what the fxxk is that galaxy note, Dom joly comes to mind youth
That post is just sad. And you don’t know why. When I shop for a brilliant smartphone, I am shopping specs and features, not a brand. But Samsung consistently is ahead of Apple in that respect, and the S3 is no different. I would actully be surprised if Apple ever made a product which matched Samsung’s devices at the same time (not years later).
Funny how Apple fanboys were saying that their postage stamp 3.5″ screen was “just right”, and now they give it a 4″ screen? Also, the processor in the iPhone 5 is NOT a quad core. It is a hybrid dual core put on a single chip. If Apple fanboys and fangurls were actual geeks, they would see the iPhone as I do and see an inherently inferior product with a snazzy package and throngs of sheep. Look up “Pet Rock” if you want to see what the magic of marketing can do for a product. Even a worthless rock. No iPhone exists which is superior to high end Androids from several manufacturers.
This article is so pro-iPhone biased.
“On the contrary, since the iPhone 5 has a LCD screen, it can display whites much better” What? That doesn’t make sense. They both have LCD screens, the difference is that the S3 backlights each pixel individually with LEDs.
“Samsung’s front-facing camera is nicer, but only marginally” .9MP vs 1.9? When something is more than doubled, you can’t really refer to it as ‘marginal.’
“we’d also wager that Apple’s new rear-facing camera will outperform Samsung’s to a noticeable degree.” Where is the basis for this? You didn’t elaborate in any way. Is short, you made that up, because your bias compelled you to.
“both devices perform roughly evenly when it comes to battery life (we’re guessing)” the chart shows 8 hours for the iPhone, and 11 for the S3. That’s a difference of 3 hours, or about 37% better for the S3. Oh wait, you ‘guessed,’ that gives you a pass to lie about the battery life.
I’m sorry, but the S3 is just plain superior in all but aesthetics and weight ( It’s about 3/4 of an ounce heavier). This article is so pro-iPhone biased.

It is 100% pro iPhone based – just look at the title image, it shows both phones side by side, with the iPhone as a larger image, even though it’s a smaller phone (height and width) – as soon as I saw that image (which was the very first impression), I knew right away the article would be pro-Apple…
This article was supposed to be pro-iPhone, but the author just cant pull it off even with the fudged photo which magnifies the iPhone. These stupid tricks actually hurt the iPhone 5 because in REAL LIFE when the iPhone 5 user buys their phone in an Apple store where there are no other phones, they think they are getting a larger phone when in real life it looks alike a girl’s dainty lil phone. The white iPhone just needs a flip up back and a mirror and it would make a great makeup compact for my GF,
In all seriousness, these phones should ALWAYS show the iPhone in a clunky Otter case and SOME Samsungs in a case. I do not think I have ever seen an iPhone without a case except in an Apple store.
i bought the iphone 4 two years ago i am two days away from my next upgrade. Unfortunately apple hasn’t done ENOUGH to entice me, it looks the same other than the different back and the length. i am happy enough with the features that the 4 came with, i dont have siri obviously, the camera is fine but i dont use it much. i will keep my iphone 4 but i will buy an S3 contract i have to think about the cost and my budget this year and coming months. With that in consideration there really is no point to iphone, if you ask me they have ran out of ideas. Each phone should be different and innovative, which they used to be but they have been rapidly taken over by others and at a lower cost. People may complain about the case materials, in the S3, they simply did that to keep the costs down thats why they are more competitive. If all the mobile companies did what apple do they couldn’t sell to everyone it would be out of most peoples price range.
Yes, i like the interface and how well built iphone is, but if i can do what i want with my phone and MORE because apple heavily restrict their products i’d rather change and go samsung.
and before anyone else shoots me down i have over 900 apps most i got for free (with those apps that tell you what’s free every night) this is the ONLY reason i will keep the phone.
Bye bye Apple/Iphone it was good while it lastest, its alright having a beautiful phone to look at but the serious restrictiveness and the expense is too much i have to think about my pocket and be reasonable. You need a good kick up the backside to create more products and QUICKER.
For the operating system, voice assistant and default apps, can we wait first with the jelly bean update for the S3 with Google Now? Anyway majority of Specs wise goes to the S3. iPhone 5 with that specs not worth the money
iphone 5 does not beat S3 and it is new to the market. It should have really. Wait till we compare S4 to iphone5…
how about the add-on accessories? external flash drives, card reader, external hard disk drive, usb/or bluetooth mouse and keyboard connectivity, tv-out/hdmi, game console controller that works flawlwssly? samsung s3 can do all that at the same time.
Anybody thats still using iphone is just a fan and has no knowledge of phones, and no im not trolling.
Apple says the most advanced OS in the world…. they are the trolls.. my outdated atrix has more features than apples locked up lil kid toys. even Cydia sucks and siri is laughable not even because of how badly it works but because no one uses it after the first month or so of getting their phone its usless
Anybody who says iPhone is crap and that has never had one is just closed minded.
Ive owned the following iphones 3 3gs and 4, I can assure you they are not crap as crap doesn’t shatter when you drop it! They are however lightyears behind the samsung galaxy line of phones!
Lightyears? That’s an enormous distance my friend. If you take a look at the chart up there in the article, these two phones are nearly identical. S3 beats the iphone in a few categories, iphone beats S3 in 1 category, it’s all good fun and games.
LOL! Nearly identical????
HAHAHAHAHA! I needed that laugh. The numbers are right here on the same page as you are looking at. And if you want to see howm the iPhone 5 ACTUALLY looks next to the Samsung Galaxy SIII, here is a picture:
http://www.icantinternet.org/wp-content/Samsung-Galaxy-S3-vs-iPhone-5.png
iPhones are toys in comparison. They are sealed up so you cant break them. A child-proof phone. They remind me of those cars at Disneyland which run on the rails, so you only think you are steering them but if you let go you will be just fine.
Half of the people commenting have had both there is no bias get with the program
denied troll = definite troll
Completely agree. I am an IT professional and I understand why the iPhone is such a crippled little device. When you are shopping for technology, those who buy a brand name are buying a perception constructed for them by a marketing strategy. A geek is not impressed with any of that and will buy the most bang for the buck. But in the case of the StiII, you are getting both a brand and superior technology. Most Apply buyers dont realize that Samsung makes a great deal of their precious iPhone right down to its chip.
Why is this image showing iPhone 5 bigger than the S3? iPhone 5 has a 4″ and s3 has a 4.8″ screen.
Anyway S3 is a straight winner!
S3 is wider. Cant you see?
Oh and it is all personal preference. I’d prefer a 4 Inch screen over a 4.8…. Texting with one hand is easier on an iPhone. It is all in how you look at it. iPhone has a much nicer screen than the S3 while S3 has more storage capacity.
Much nicer? and you come to this conclusion how? let me guess 2+2 really isn’t 4? If you prefer a 4inch screen thats understandable go get you a free two year old samsung and you will still have a better phone then the 5! Then take that 200 you were fixing to waste and find someone in need and help em out! Let me guess, thats not cool enough fer ya huh,
Funny how they were saying the 3.5″ postage stamp screen was “just right” when they were dissing the DOZENS of Androids which were starting to sport 4″ and larger screens TWO YEARS ago. Now, they “prefer” their smaller 4″ screen over a larger one? LOL! When Apple finally gets a 4’5″ screen like my Galaxy SII Epic 4G Touch has (and its before the S3 which might be my next phone, or the S4 or the Note), they will “prefer” that size.
Why is Apple trying to say iPhone 5 is the world’s thinnest phone when it is not? And that processor is NOT a quad core. It is a twin dual core (not the same). Why the fake zooming of the size in the photo? The S3 makes the iPhone look anorexic and weak.
Android
Great article! I’ve been an iPhone user for 4 years and will be jumping over to the Galaxy S3. The iPhone 5 doesn’t have that killer feature that has kept them above the competition.
But isn’t the S3′s processor here in the US a 1.5Ghz dual core Snapdragon? I thought the quad core version wasn’t out yet and might be available only in Europe.
The dual core but it’s super fast one, plus it will most runs as fast as the quad core in tests …
I don’t see how the iPhone wins the hardware category, given that the S3 has 2B RAM and has a quad core processor inside. The iPhone comes with a dual core, like the S2 was. Moreover, front camera in S3 is superior too.
And as for Audio and Video, how exactly is the iPhone winning? What about all the video formats the iOS won’t recognise? The Android system has most codecs you will ever need to watch videos from many different sources, while the iPhone will only run things that are purchased in the App store or can be run by Quicktime. You would have to spend a long time converting videos to be able to play them in the iPhone.
And customisation? Protective cases, really? hahaha! What really matters is the flexibility Android offers you in all areas, including customising your screens, inserting widgets that occupy as much space as you want and more.
I really like some iPhone features but IMO this comparison is extremely biased towards iPhone.
All I can tell you is that I did not bias toward any device. I’m a longtime Android user. Things like cases may not matter to you, but things like customizing homescreens and widgets may not matter to someone else.
iPhone did not win the hardware category.
I have 4 phones:
Apple 4 & 5
Galaxy 2 & 3
I only use the 5 & 3 now, as I have run these brands for many years I can honestly tell you the facts. S3 wins hands down. One main factor is its ability to use any computer with a standard common cable to save documents, pictures, music without having to use a special software package.
The second issue I have with your ratings is voice assistance, who cares, it is less than 5% of 5% usage, you should be looking at the things that you need a phone for, making calls. You should look at voice quality, service availability, hands free operation, S3 wins again. Taking pictures, storing transferring, S3 wins again. Music playing, Apple wins. I am sorry but I use these phones for approx. 12 hours per day everyday for my work (some apps are not on Google) and I would use my S3 80% of the time as I have found that I can get and receive calls on my S3 where my Apple has no connection.
iphone 5 is wayy better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at all the other people who have iphones!!!!!!!!
iphone is better.
hi
iPhone 5 is way better. As you can see, almost EVERYONE has an iPhone. ALOT more people have an iPhone rather than a Samsung Galaxy. iPhone 5 has a better screen resolution, and the camera is good. Even though it has a purple haze thing, who really is going to be taking pictures of the sun ALL THE TIME?!Samsung Galaxy is quite WIDE, so if you wanted to carry it around more and stuff, it is quite big to do that, but iPhone 5 is skinny, so it is more eaiser to do so. iPhone 5 does not look cheap at all, but the Samsung Galaxy kind of looks cheap when it comes to the back of the Samsung Galaxy. The camera on the Galaxy kinda looks old fashion. And, the Galaxy made their phone have a lot of similar features like all those other smart phones do, for example, like the LG Neon or Pantech Laser. If you want a SMART PHONE, you should better go ahead and get the iPHONE 5, but if you want a dumb phone, go ahead and get the SAMSUNG GALAXY S3! :)
This Review is borderline crap
I have seen kids in the age of ten writing better reviews.
Not only that the author most likely had NO idea of Smartphones at all but furthermore his style of writing is crappy as hell. After the first 3 paragraphs you wish you had a gun to kill yourself.
But to get back to topic: Iphone 5 is by no means a match for the Samsung Galaxy S3.
I agree that the exterior of the iPhone may be more attractive but the main issue of a smartphone should be it’s usability, personalization and hardware specs and Android wins in every major point when it comes to “designing” my own phone’s OS. Also the S3 brings you way more power in terms of any work that the phone could do, if it’s a game you want to play, open 10000 Tabs in your Browser or just manage your notes, the Galaxy works faster, period.
This is the worst article ever If your going to be biased, be a little more covert about it. ill give you the IPS display is the best technology out there right now, but cmon son, 4 inch screen is the perfect size? didnt they say 3.5 is perfect? the next one will say 4.5 is perfect, till they finally catch up to android phones…..
User interface IS the operating system, they created another category out of nothing just to give apple the edge.
audio video, last time i checked, my s3 is so loud it can blow out your ear drum, the screen looks gorgeous to watch movies and shows on, and you can actually SEE IT.
Hardware specs – S3 has a faster processor, extra gig of ram ,Removable/expandable battery, and internal/external storage. and its also my user friendly to 3rd party accessories .
Voice assistant- They both suck , its definitely a tie. Im not too biased to say S voice blows and so does Siri.
Battery life- clearly, even biased people say this is better
Oh and as far as build quality, I prefer plastic back over aluminum, They are both going to scratch the only difference is i can replace a piece of plastic for less than $10 , You cant replace the aluminum unless you send it to apple ….thats always fun.
i stopped trusting this article after the Screen and Processor part..
Screen – it’s pretty objective, some people like bigger screen, some people want it as small as possible
User interface – again it’s objective, apple wants their phone to be simple, samsung let you customize.
Personalization – you shouldn’t list this after what you said in user interface.. cuz it’s clearly samsung has an upper hand here(apple let you customize too, but require 3rd party apps)
Audio & Video – very subjective… just because apple has podcast.. it’ll win? and pandora you can get it from google play as well. and if you really love music and love listen to music, you wouldn’t use those earphones but would buy those fancy headphones instead
Hardware specifications – s3 beats iphone 5 in processor, front-facing camera, storage capacity and battery life while the rest are either subjective or tie. (i just state what i see)
Voice assistants – both suck!
Both android and apple have a fair share of crash and bugs, just apple cover them up while android shows
oh by the way, to those fanboys saying iPhone is the father of all smartphone.. think again or look up on google.
IPhone 5 rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
S3 sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont be bitter, IPhone 5 is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IOS is better then android
IPhone 5
whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
S3 sucks
dont be bitter, IPhone 5 rules
muhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
IOS beets android
I have to agree with huhh.
This is mostly crap. I’ve used both and there is no way the iphone 5 beats the s3 in any category.
The only thing I’ve found that the ip5 does that the s3 doesn’t is visual voice mail but I never use it and I’m told it’s arriving soon. And to give the iphone the win for customisation? Are you kidding? The iphone is one of the most locked down handsets I’ve ever used. I mean how many other phones force you to use iTunes to do something as simple as making a custom ring tone. I do this on my s3 I’m a matter of seconds.
Oh and when android 4.1.2 is officially released (I’ve been using it now for a few weeks after rooting my s3) it features multiscreen which allows 3 separate screens simultaneously. Let’s see the iphone do that.
All this and a retail value of around just 75% of the iphone.
Sorry Apple. People (at least ones that know their sh#t) just expect more from a smartphone these days.
Apple people are all the same. They overlook anything negative because Apple is so “cool”. All the garbage that Fanboys spew, “Macs dont get viruses”, “Macs never break down”. Garbage!!!
Let me guess, you wrote this on your Macbook and you read these updates on your iphone. Pretend I am wrong.
For me it’s about the devil in the details. And there, Apple (still) gets it and gets me. I held a brand new S3 in my hands of a friend. He only had a few apps downloaded and did not manage to fill even a single page with apps, yet I was able to scroll through at least 6 blank place-holder app pages. I gave him the phone back and made up my mind. I’m sure there is a way to customize the UI to my liking but that’s exactly what I get OOB with Apple – they design the UI that makes the most sense and is logical for me. Like every one else I am concerned about the direction Apple is going in the post-Steve era and Apple is making its share of mistakes like leaving out NFC, g-maps and I’ve always hated their genius bar and overall customer care. I am happy there’s finally competition on par with iphone that will light some fire under Apple to listen to their customers.
There is a critical thing never mentioned but samsung users know that…. “samsung has a lot of bugs” and IT SUCKS. No matter it is faster, no matter it has better resolution, it drives you nut by its bugs…
The is also a Sport Version of KIA CEED, but nobody is comparing it to a BMW 130….
I have both. The S3 spanks the iPhone. I’m going to sell the iPhone. Let’s look at some mistakes in this analysis.
“The Galaxy S3, like other Android phones, does not have a robust case and accessory ecosystem.”
1. The S3 has literally hundreds of different kinds of cases, holsters.
2. Instead of putting a fat case on it, you can replace the replacement battery cover case itself with something just as thin, which has a kickstand.
3. You can replace the battery. You can get a 4500mah battery with a battery replacement cover case, and one that has a kickstand too.
4. You can upgrade the internal memory and external microSD to a total of 128GB. When 128GB microSD comes out next spring, that’ll be a whopping 192GB you can go up to.
….
“User Interface … tie”. The same old unchanged UI from iOS 1, with a notification center as the only new addition? Are you JOKING?!? My screen keeps track of weather and time in 6 cities, sports scores of my favorite teams, has a widget showing missed calls, missed texts, and new emails all in one nice little place. I have fully customized by text messages to look EXACTLY how I like them, I have a calendar up showing me my schedule and appointments for the week, when I click share I have the choice of dozens of apps to use to do the sharing, and can customize which ones get shown in that menu, I have little buttons that with one tap instantly change between custom profiles for saving battery (turning off 4g, Wifi, GPS, etc.), and use a keyboard like SwiftKey where half of the words I use are predicted ahead of time and I type so fast it makes my head spin, get way more out of every single Google service (Maps, YouTube, Gmail, Places, Reader, Currents, Docs, and on and on…
…..
Voice Assistant: Winner iPhone 5. Huh?!? Running AOS 4.2 JB, I can use a combo between Google Now and S-Voice to launch any app I want. Google Now has way faster and cleaner voice recognition that more efficiently hooks into more of the phone’s features. Admittedly, Siri has a little more personality, but this is still a clear win for the S3 / Android.
…
Screen. Winner: iPhone 5. No way, José. Just the opposite. Complete domination by S3. If the Screen were a football game the score would be S3:45 i5: 13. I will take a SLIGHTLY lower PPI any day over a tiny 4-inch micro-screen. On the 4.8″ screen I can actually USE my smartphone for what it’s good for. Let’s keep in mind that 4.8″ vs 4″ doesn’t seem like a lot, but it is FORTY PERCENT MORE SURFACE AREA. I can actually surf the web, enjoy blogging, READ AN ACTUAL EBOOK without squinting, WATCH AN ACTUAL VIDEO without feeling like a dorky squinting gnome, write notes and do word processing that’s actually productive.
I don’t have time to go into all the other areas where the S3 rocks over the iPhone. The iPhone’s advantages are basically the PPI, and for some things (but not all), it might take 3 finger taps instead of 4 to execute what you want to do. The S3, anything you don’t like about it, you can customize or install replacement apps that are EXACTLY what you want.
Hardware by comparison..most important is CPU 1.7Ghz QuadCore Tegra3 vs A6 1.3Ghz DualCore….
SGS3 win…
This is hilarious. Even Conan and Jimmy Kimmel have to weigh in on the iSheep fanboys/fangirls nonsense.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57541379/jimmy-kimmel-conan-obrien-poke-fun-of-apple-ipad-mini/
Erick Contreras I just will NEVER see why so many ppl make a big deal and overrate certain things..
Honestly I am tied in for iPad’s for life, I got my revolving ipad at bestbuy. Now I can’t see myself to switch my tablet, and iPhone is a good side kick.
I got the Galaxy S3 a month ago after being a faithful iPhone user since the beginning. Thought I wanted a change, but now I am sorry I did. I would do anything to have my iPhone back.
I am thinking of doing of switching from Android as I have had an HTC Evo 4g for over 2 years to the Iphone 5. Why do you dislike the S3? I seem to change my mind daily on sticking with Android or going the Iphone route for the first time. I have an iPad and an Imac now. Why don’t you like the S3 and miss Iphone? I will be tied for 2 years so I want to make sure I make the right decision and you did the opposite of what i might do so your insight would be appreciated.
It just comes down to a matter of preference and comfort level. Don’t get me wrong, I really have no reason for not liking the S3. It performs well. I had the iPhone 4S, so I don’t know how the 5 rates in comparison. The iPhone fits better in my hand. The S3 is larger and I have actually dropped it a few times because it is larger and I can’t wrap my hand around it. I made a switch to the S3 because I liked the idea of being able to customize it. I was getting bored with the iPhone’s look and wanted some variety. I like the battery life on my iPhone better. I was able to get through the entire day without a charge unlike my S3. Another reason is because I have an iPad and the two together work well. I prefer the simplicity of the iPhone. The iPhone has everything I need to do and suits my needs adequately. I have realized I don’t need all the bells and whistles that I was being sold on with the S3. Sorry, I’m not a technical person, so I don’t have any specifics for you. Of note, I have been able to turn in my S3 and get the iPhone 5. I hear there are some issues with it, but don’t they all!
Thanks for the reply. That’s kind of how I have been feeling about my Android. Once the novelty of changing the interface wears off and customizing it I realize I really don’t care that much about the Icons or launchers. Especially Widgets – they are cool but every single time I added any it would quickly kill my battery. I ended up rooting it to get it to run better but at the end of the day I am wasting so much time fixing, rooting, customizing that I am not actually using all the cool apps that I could. Samsung added a lot of “cool” features to the S3 but to me it’s smoke & mirrors for things that are not actually used often.
I was curious about NFC since everyone seems to be pointing out how the Iphone didn’t include that just like Flash (we know what happened to mobile Flash). I have yet to come across anyone who has actually used NFC let alone knows what it is. Thanks again for the information.
Good Article and appreciate the break down. People really think this is a biased article. I found it very clear and factual. Every article that leans one way or the other everyone wants to scream it’s biased. I have used most of the platforms and plan on going with my FIRST Iphone. Why… I have been trying to decide for a few weeks on Iphone 5 or Samsung S3. Nothing syncs as easily with my Ipad, Imac and it seems to getting better with each rollout. What’s more important, that I can add anything to my calendar, notes, reminders on any device or put widget that slows down my phone and crashes it many times? Oh where to even begin on all that Jazz….People are so defensive of the customization but really don’t think about all the issues that can come up. I have had an Android for going on 3 years now. I am definitely ready to dump Android. Someone also mentioned that the widgets launchers are great for their Mommie or Granny….If they can’t figure out how to press the Icon for their contacts or make a call it may be time for the home. I find most of the Widgets or launchers I used were either quickly dumped or annoying. Go ahead an add a bunch and see how well your phone runs. I am looking forward to Synch ability, doing things and picking right where I left of from one device to another. Not sitting there scrolling through a bunch of crappy widgets and installing a Kill app so I can stop all those bad battery consuming widgets and launchers. Yea yea…go ahead and jump all over me but I am only recently switching after suing everything but an Iphone. Seeing too many of my friends never have issues and get more done finally got to me while I had my thumb stuck up my a** Rooting my droid and adding and removing widgets. Dohhh!
I also can’t get past the horrible update situation by Samsung. After two TV’s and the Galaxy Wifi Tab (piece of junk) I can attest that once Android comes out with a new OS you not only have to get past Samsung updating the system but the Carrier as well. They are great about pushing their latest and greatest but when the next phone comes out you are left in the dust. The TV issues are a whole different story but similar update issues. Promises of Netflix on my Yahoo Widget TV never happened, promises that my Galaxy Tab would be able to have Hulu Plus and the capability to move shows from Tab to TV and over year to get ICS on my awful Galaxy Tab. Have their update roll outs improved? Probably not. I am sick of their lies and false promises. That was the short of my issues with Samsung. I have been using an HTC EVO for over two years. Again updates were dropped. The story always is it cant support the current OS. Wow, two years old and it wont support ICS! More specifically –
Why do I need a phone bigger than 4 inches. If you need anything bigger that’s what tablets are for and it just seems asinine to be carrying around these giant phones. The Galaxy is still manageable but come on. Is it over compensation in other areas?
My current phone has a 16g SD Card. I find it mostly useless. If I need so much storage I will opt for a bigger Iphone and there are a zillion Cloud services for everything.
NFC – Has anyone actually used that yet? While it would have been nice for Apple to include it I don’t know many people who know what it is let alone anywhere to use it. Get real, it’s still a few years off and I am not sure where it is even being used.
I had to root my Android to get it to run faster and use a better ROM. I have no interest in doing that again or why anyone would need to do that if they just buy something that just works and is updated the way it should be…Iphone! Really, I can add different wall papers and clocks…Ohhhh. Wooooow! Who cares! Rooting a phone is like changing the wallpaper on my desktop. Big whoop. The phone should be cable of doing everything you want or you bought the wrong phone.
Iphone maps suck. Well so did Google Maps when they first came out and anyone who has a clue knows that Apple will get this right and eventually better. For now there are many other options including Google Maps, whiners. I personally prefer TeleNav.
Apple doesn’t use Mini USB. While that would have been great how many different plugs has anyone used in the course of their cell phone beginnings Again whiners. The charger is an improvement and who cares. It’s what they do to set themselves apart. Not follow the rest…
A year ago I was Android all the way till I got a taste of using an Ipad and how a tablet is supposed to work! I held back because Apple didn’t support Flash. We see where mobile Flash went. Even my Imac just works better. This article isnt about Windows but I installed Win 8 on one computer and hate it. Looks like something for Children 3-10 from Hasbro. CRAP!
Android still cant seem to get their OS updates streamlined with all the manufacturers. I can guarantee that when the Samsung Galaxy S4 comes out Samsung wont care too much about all of you who think the Galaxy S3 is the second coming of Jesus. I would bet all my money that the Iphone 5 will continue to get updates for sometime. Quite sometime!
I do agree that the Iphone 5 wasn’t a huge jump but then again when something is better why would you have to recreate the wheel?
Now if any of these manufacturers could integrate the Palm OS true Multi tasking instead of the fake multi tasking on Apple, Android, and Windows….
I have come to the conclusion after using all platforms that the Iphone is for Adults, Android is for ages 12+ and manboys (Adam Sandler and Will Ferrel come to mind) and old ladies where sonny makes the phone work real good for mommie, and lastly Windows 8 is for Tards and Children 3-11.
Fanboy, Did you line up for a phone. What most fail to realize when buying into the Apple Eco-system is that your being censored. If you can’t USE it the way YOU want then you don’t own it.
Updates, lets talk IPhone updates. Anyone own a 3GS out there? Itching to get a new you got Iphone. Chances are that the new OS made your most important computing device shit the bed. Did you have a choice or was it FORCED onto you. Was it broken? No. But hell you got Siri, wasn’t the slow unresponsive device worth broken Maps and garbage voice recognition.
Fair they put alot of effort into releasing the same Phone over and over and over again. If your customers are so uninformed, unable to adapt to new tech and have a hard time with change then give them the same crap.
Just remember what Apple really thinks about you the user. The cell reception sucked in the 4S because YOU were HOLDING it wrong.
RickZ isn’t Dick your nick name.
You obviously missed my point and can’t read very well. I have NEVER owned an iPhone. I have been using an HTC Evo for almost 2.5 years. I also think standing in line for hours to buy anything is moronic. With that said let me clue you in on some FACTS and real information. AND Apple seems to think a lot about the consumer as most of the time everything works great. Even down to designs of a iMac, their mouse, keyboard it seems everything points to the consumer “in mind”
Do you really want to have a pissing match about each OS having issues related to a release of a new product? Come on. Get a friggin clue. How many manufactures released an OS or hardware that wasn’t always up to par. Windows? Palm? RIM? Apple? Android? All of them have had something you could say was shit. Is the reception bad on the 4S? Thanks for enlightening me. The friends I know who have the 4S had issues that I know of. IS that a Big Dave stat?
First, you had to go back to 3GS to compare Androids continued splintered OS update rollouts and fixes. As I said I owned an awful Galaxy 10.1 Tab and a HTC EVO. Samsung is one of the worst for updates for older products. I can attest to two TV’s and a Galaxy Tab. Actually, some updates make things work better and correct issues. If you were so tech savvy you would realize that. I did shit my bed when I could finally take a picture without lag. ICS was supposed to resolve these issues but I was at the mercy of Samsung’s awful track record. Wait till that S4 comes out. They will forget about you really quick. . Had to root the Evo to get it to run better and crash less until my contract allowed me to update.
Google Maps are better, yes but after years of doing maps I would hope so. When Google Maps first came out there were issues. Apple will perfect it and I am sure make it better than Google just like they set a standard for most everything. But is that a deal breaker when there are tons of Navigation & Map apps? Some better than Google Maps.
Also, anyone who knows about operating systems can tell you the issues with Android. Were you referring to developers? My cell provider said 95% of the people coming in were with Android issues. BTW there are some draw back to your open system the main one is the FBI recently warned Google about malware issues. Look for the facts online as you are probably clueless.
More fun facts: (re-sharing from a comparison I did)
Apple is a closed system and Android is open – mostly incorrect. While both can be rooted/jailbroken. Android still has preinstalled apps and bloatware based on your carrier AND Manufacturer. This bloatware can cause other issues. Apple may make you jump through hoops and pay less to devs for those apps but there are by far too many bad developers for Android. How does a consumer even know what they may be getting half the time. Bugs and malware maybe. IPHONE wins!
Updates are horribly inconsistent for Android and you are at the mercy of both the carrier and manufacturer once again. IOS is nicely streamlined with their Ipads, Ipods, and Iphones and you are more likely to get the latest updates for even older devices. A year for Samsung to get ICS on my Galaxy Tab (Android on the Tab was horrendous). Never got it for my Evo. Already running IOS 6 after just a few months of my first Ipad which worked and works perfect. IPHONE wins!
NFC – Is anyone really using this yet? If I were to ask most of my friends would they even know what it is? A good selling point for Samsung but Apple knows it’s use is still a few years off. Google it. I was curious and see it is projected to be anywhere from a few years to 10 years off. Apple got it right with Flash I think they have it right about NFC. IPHONE Wins!
SD Card. I have a 16g on my HTC which is pretty much useless as I get my music from Google Music and most everything else from one cloud or another. Toss up for those who don’t have a clue how to use cloud services or need a zillion apps they will never use.
Oooooo! you can add widgets and launchers or even worse some stupid theme. Really. Did you put stickers on your home phone?…Probably! IF themes are important to you I am sure you cannot live without some awful ringtone only you think is cool. Wow, from experience these slowed down my phone, crashed and killed my battery. Deleted almost all of them. They are crap. It’s like saying I can change the wall paper on my desk top. I am not impressed by your background or your ugly icons. Get out of mommies basement as your costume for comic con is ready. IPHONE wins!
The S3 has a bigger screen. Anyone remember when cell phones all were trying to be as small as possible. If you need anything bigger than 4 inches you might be over compensating for something else. The Samsung Note is just ridiculous. The S3 is a great screen and about as big as what I would feel comfortable holding The IPhone 5 is perfect! Draw.
Other stuff, You can swipe your palm over the screen on the S3 to take a screen shot (how many times do you actually take screen shots, why? of your penis?) You can bump your S3 and share stuff with other GALAXY phones. Ummm, ok. The Iphone INSTANTLY syncs your pictures, reminders, notes, bookmarks, music etc with your mac & Ipad. You can even add the Icloud Application to sync from Windows for pictures. IPHONE wins.
A lot of the selling points for the Samsung sound great on paper but in the real world are you actually doing or using some of these features. There are plenty of features I haven’t even mentioned that just make the Iphone better. I have never owned one but based on my experience with all the platforms and using my Ipad I have concluded it is by far a better OS.
Android users are more technically savvy than Iphone users. Having used both OS’s I realize Android (for some) is for those with time to kill who want to waste it on rooting and flashing some ROM and Kernel. Look what I can DO. Iphone users actually use real world applications that get things done instead of time wasting rooting and roms that work half assed. Go look at all the ROms and see how many disable this or that. Been there done that. No thanks! Can’t wait to get my first Iphone and leave behind the world of Rooting, waiting for updates, crashes, lags, bad widgets, awful themes, manufacturers bloatware ETC!. I will be able to take pictures and have them instantly on my Imac and Ipad, reminders, notes, music, documents and more. If I want to geek out I can jailbreak my Iphone – but why bother. Maybe for tethering, otherwise naaa.
I love change that is why I am dumping Android in favor of my first Iphone. I am so happy you pointed out my nick name. You must have dick on your mind. Thanks but I really don’t want to go down to your basement and play “computer games” with you and your Dad. He’s still sore from the last time I fixed his Android because you tried rooting it again.
Have fun rooting and adding your really really cool My Little Pony Theme. See you at Comic Con in your Darth Nihilus costume that your Mom made for free because you added a Widget to her phone with a big button to call you. Baba Booey!
I will concede that Samsung looks like they will be updating the S3 sooner than I would have imagined. So Kudos to them if they are finally getting on track with Android updates. I hope they take the lead for the platform and finally give consumers confidence.
I am not impressed with apples most recent innovations. That being said….
phone dude no one cares about your fight for android. its basically a cheap option for a smartphone with the exception of s3. just like windows they release there software to everyone and immediately the market is overrun with cheap versions of everything. if android just made there own phones this would be a way better discussion. all of the things you listed about android are the things that make it annoying to use unless your a 17 year old kid. whats the matter your porn only come in avi.? who cares i purchase iPhones because they sync with all the things i have easily . iPad, macbook pro and iPod, grow up android users its only a competition if you make it one and frankly you make it one because you know your losing. good luck finding that one other galaxy s3 to “Bump” with. Its a matter of preference. if i used windows products i would probably get a galaxy. but i don’t and haven’t since the 90′s because they have proven time after time that they are unreliable. and there is no android for computers, so your essentially taking multiple software platforms and trying to make them all work together. ill pass with having 47 clock animations thank you.
Hey realphonedude, I had the original Mac 512k, Mac Plus, Mac II, IIsi, IILC, powermac 9600, original powerbook 100, a few PC’s in between, then the first Macbook Pro, then went PC laptop for good.
Android offers choice, and freedom with their devices. Also at different price points through different models that allow folks who want a smartphone at a lower subsidized cost. My friend’s parents seized the opportunity to get Android smartphones through their renewal for free. Now they can enjoy the benefits without having to pay so much (for them) for a smartphone. Something your dictator phone doesn’t allow….along with countless other features. Friends of mine who have Android devices customize their homescreen/launcher to what is pertinent to THEM. Apps, or widgets they use, number of home screens etc. It is NO DIFFERENT than what I have on my laptop’s desktop. *I* choose what I want on my desktop. Macbook users are offered the same freedom.
Not sure what you’re referring to with the “porn only come in avi?” remark. Android users have options for media players that will play ANYTHING.
“if android just made there own phones this would be a way better discussion. all of the things you listed about android are the things that make it annoying to use unless your a 17 year old kid. ”
Please re-read, you’re the 17 year old kid. Android is the operating system…that’s like saying “if iOS just made there own phones…”, btw it’s THEIR not THERE.
Oh, 4 inch screen? I’m sure you bought into that BS. Usually, a screen size improvement would yield increase in BOTH dimensions. Going 1136×640 and touting a larger screen size is just gulping the Apple kool aid. Android devices are already at HD res with LARGER screens and impressive form factors…ie: smaller bezel.
Apple has turned into a religion…and you certainly practice it. My mother has a feature phone, and my previous Android phone will be her’s when she decides to take the plunge. THE FIRST QUESTION SHE ASKED…coming from a feature phone user….and after he watching me use my phone, she asked if it is possible to have contacts on the screen where she can touch the icon and immediately call. I said yes, and she was extremely happy.
Oh, btw, I have several friends that have GS3′s. The bump feature is stupid fun…but wifi direct is even more fun, when you are out and about with friends at a bar, coffee shop etc. and you can immediately send funny photos…you know, like that “guy” with the Macbook in a coffee shop with his iPad and iPhone.
I like how you’ve made the iphone look bigger than the S3 when really, apple should’ve made the screen 4.8 inches anyway.
Nice… I will hold out until Iphone 5S comes out.
woooooo LETS GO IPHONE 5!!!!! completely turned the S3 upside down and powerbomb it. lays the smack down and gets the 3 pin!!! ok, now on to chatter talk. The iphone 5 really is great and i agree with the mess that was written in this article. Samsung galaxy 3 is also the top android phone. Sammy just over hyped it now all the android guys think it’s the best phone ever ever time you look up you see these samsung s3 ads trying to downgrade the iphone yada yada yada. Everyone knows the iphone main 2 colors are black and white now the S3 main color wants to be white yeah white isn’t tied to apple but we all know for the pass 5 years white has been a iphone think. I encourage Samsung to make a device that others tend to mimic. The only thing the S3 does is take where the iphone 4 messed up at and made a phone that was better it’s not like what you get on the S3 you couldn’t of got it on the iphone. Iphone 5 is really a great phone and it looks sooooo cooler. wooooooooooo owell
I agree with the overall assestment but I disagree with some of the categories.
For example, I think iOS is the better OS overall because of how quick and seamless it is where Android tends to be jittery, laggy and unresponsive. Also, iOS seamlessly allows you to connect all of your devices while Android severally lacks in support for this type of thing.
However, in the camera battle, I’m starting to think that the S3 (and other high-end Androids) performs better in normal / bright lighting conditions while the iPhone 5 only performs better in dark light conditions. I think some more research needs to go into this, though.
Jittery, laggy and unresponsive? No, no and no. I have never had issues with the Android OS on any of my 3 phones..including the Galaxy S3. As the article states, it’s truly a matter of taste. I gave up my iPhones because I hated paying $$ for extra memory and I got ripped off for a replacement battery. I liked the iPhone, but those limitations pushed me to switch to Android.
I’ve owned Android phones before (including the HTC EVO 4G) and after three months it was a piece of junk: jittery, laggy and unresponsive. He tells the truth. And you’re a bold faced liar when you claim you owned the iPhone and then switched to Droid. I don’t know ANYONE who actually said “Gosh, my iPhone is a terrible phone. I’m going to switch to Crapoid instead.” Come on now.
I too switched to S3 after getting sick and tired of iPhone. Many people around me did. This article compare S3 vs iPhone5, not your crap. S3 is extremely responsive and no lags whatsoever. Just check real owners comments everywhere. He is not liar, you just need to improve your social circle.
Until you’ve owned it for a while and it turns into the CRAP I just said it was! You lie all to well if you claim everyone you knew hated their iPhones. What circle do you hang with? Unless you’re a mad scientist who wants to defrag their whole interface, there’s no reason I can think on why you’d hate the iPhone. Its flawless in its user-friendly ability and its never glitchy. You probably had a bad egg.
i agree with what you say JT but not with what you say about high end android phones, low end ones yes are mostly crap but higher end ones are really coming into their own, when i seen that jelly bean was being introduced and it is even smoother than ICS i was like hows that then can they really do that. as much as i think the iphone 5 and all iphones are lovely devices and truly a joy to use i cant help but get annoyed at people stating that having no removeable battery is fine and having no memory card slot is fine why would you need these things lol its frankly bonkers that such comments come out, why dont you look at it from the other side and ask yourselves why the hell it was so hard for apple to give its users them options. i mean whats so hard about making the battery removeable, whats so hard about giving expandable memory, why have apple done this, do you really think its to benefit the user in any way, if you do you truly are brainwashed.
im all for praising the iphone aswell as the galaxy s3 and a few others but you have to accept the flaws aswell and they are only flaws you can do without because it isnt an option.
Hey Jason, lay off the Apple Kool Aid. No phone is perfect, and as the article states..it’s a matter of taste.
Did you even read my whole post?? I said I switched from the iPhone because I didn’t like my options regarding memory and battery replacement cost. I also had reliability issues. Both of the phones here are outstanding..I made a choice based on whats important to me.
Android definitely isn’t quite as responsive as iOS, but most phones aren’t jittery or laggy. The S3 certainly isn’t. Cameras are a tough subject, but I’d still say that I’m getting better overall shots in a wider array of conditions on the iPhone 5. But there’s nothing bad about the S3′s camera.
What do you mean by “seamlessly connect all of your devices?”
I can take a picture on my iPhone and it automatically syncs to my iPad and MacBook Air (in iPhoto) through the Photo Stream.
All of my calendars iMail rather than the default Android one + thunderbird on my windows laptop (or something else).
Those are just two examples of the connectivity I’m talking about in Apple devices but little things like that go a long way for me. I dont consider my self a typical user, but I don’t see how anyone wouldn’t benefit from those types of conveniences / features
Lol those stuff are easy as hell to setup on Android, and more. Oh, we can also set a file as ringtone without going through ridiculous and redundant amount of steps. (which is supposed to be easy)
Ever heard of tasker? Turn off wifi if leaving the house, auto silent mode if calendar event is present (work/meetings), use different keyboards for different applications (swiftkey and smart keyboard pro)
I have to say – watching the fanboys fight it always fun for me :) I am probably a bigger apple fanboy, but at least I can say that I have tried the other devices. So, I have an Iphone 5 (love it) and an SIII (and don’t hate it). I am more comfortable with the Iphone because I have been using it longer. I found myself hunting around more on the SIII to do something that feels more intuitive on the Iphone, but I will readily admit that may be because of my longer history with the Iphone. I do like the feel of the Iphone 5 in my hand MUCH more than the S3, because it feels finely crafted and the width is just right. On the S III it feels a little cheaper to me and the width makes me feel like it will fall out of my hand easier. I have medium sized hands.
In terms of Ipad vs. the new Note 10.1 I choose the Ipad. For the very simple reason that, it does everything I want it to. I found myself spending a full day on the Note trying to make it into an Ipad, when the only thing I really like about the Note is the stylus note taking (and being able to rest my hand on the screen). That wasn’t a big enough deal to me to offset my preferences with the Ipad – so I took it back.
I told a friend of mine about both devices that they are both really good products… and, in the end, it comes down to what each individual likes. I wouldn’t make fun of someone who chose Samsung – but I find it funny that people seem to HATE Apple just because they sell crazy amounts of product. Don’t hate… buy what you want and be happy!
Agreed. It really does come down to personal preference on what features matter most.
There’s no way you own BOTH the iPhone 5 and S3. What contract were you able to conjure up that allowed you to do that? Unless you just threw $500 away and have 2 phone lines, which is odd to me.
LOL.
Why would anyone own both? Its absurd. People already complain about the cost of the iPhone alone, so this harbors on fairytales.
I have had every iphone since they originally came out and just got the iphone 5 yesterday. Over my career I have had the “privilege” of also having to carry around a work phone and have had a blackberry (several), one iphone and an android. I also have two tablets, one apple and one android. I got the android because of my frustration with the limits of my iphone and ipad and after reading all of these posts I thought it would be great. Well…it wasnt. Neither was the android phone. I initially found the tinkering on the droid fun but for daily use its just too high maintenane to deal with. I actually am a tech guy myself and do get a little bent out of shape with the iphone boundaries but the reason they have them is on order to create a product like the iphone 5. Fast, stable, functional and easy.
The new iphone has 95% of the things I wanted and it is just about the perfect size. I initially wasnt sure on that but once I got the case on it I realized how big it would have been if they tried to shove an extra column of icons on it. It wouldn’t be practical for the working professional who is running all over town all day or who doesn’t want to use it as a laptop. Remember, it is a phone!
As a windows guy I had to have someone talk me into the first one but now I wouldn’t use anything else. I even ended up purchasing one for my mother a year and a half ago. She couldn’t use a computer and had a tough couple of months but now she an do almost everything on her newest iphone. After I started using mine it only took a few months before I almost completely stopped using my personal laptop at home.
If your a techie who wants an impractical toy to spend hours playing with then id run out and get a droid. If you want a device that is easy to use and functional for your everyday life you just cant beat the iphone 5. If you look at the samsung long enough and start thinking about how practical it would be to carry it around its almost a joke. I have an Otterbox on mine so i don’t set it down and forget it and to protect it from me repeatedly dropping it. This is great but the end size of phone plus the case is a bit big. If you took that Samsung and put this case on it you wouldn’t think an extra column of icons was so great! The iphone doesn’t need to be 15% better because it is twice as well designed.
At this point very person in my family, the advanced to the elderly, has one and everyone gets what they want out if it.
I honestly believe that most people on here who bash apple do it because they are cant get one. Nasty to say but sorry….its the truth. The fact is they dont discount new products and cell providers cant provide the “special upgades” they can on “non iphone” devices. Droids are just knock offs that cater to people who want a toy they can play with and get it for a deal. Problem is they are just cheap toys. You will spend more time trying to undo all of the “options” you mistakenly take advantage of and quickly will get sick of the headache. This is what happened to my droid tablet which is stuffed in a drawer somewhere.
Just get over it and buy the phone. I am a Windows man who will always use a windows for work but will always use an apple for my phone! Some people are just good at what they do and this is what apple does!
Your honest belief is way out of mark. I am a Mac guy and owned every iPhone upto 4. Money has never been an issue for me. It’s just a few hundreds bucks I will spend anyway. I was looking for more for the money and S3 was obvious choice after handson experience. The whole new world is out there, I just didn’t know it.
Maybe iPhone may be big deal in your wallet, but just do not make false assumption. Smart people go for the features and values, and it’s very different from affordability.
Very well said and I think you might have just helped me make a decision AppleFan. Ta
i want iphone as my primary phone and galaxy s3 as my spare phone
I like the Samsung Galaxy S3, however, iPhone 5 is about to be the best selling device of all time for a few reasons, and it has nothing to do with Screen Resolution or an NFC chip.
I want Iphone5 in my right pocket and samsung galaxy s3 in 2nd one. both companies are doing great job and serving humanity and business as well.
iPhone 5 is good.I think samsung S3 has a good resolution and beast screen. But iphone 5 has a slimming design and nice display. I like theme both!
samsung can produce a drink if u clic the right buttons!
Iphone is best
Now I want iPhone 5!

Wow! I like both

Thanks for knocking out such a thoughtful review based on assumption and hyperbole. I found your “we’re guessing” information almost as educational as you’re “we’d also wager” comment. Try harder next time. Leave the BS guesswork for the trolls.
One of Iphone 5′s major flaws, despite all the time put into making it a topnotch phone…is that it cannot do REAL MULTI-TASKING.
Even with the best OS apple has got…the ios6 …it still cannot do, for example: Browse FB, and watch a saved movie file at the same time…you cannot download files and then play a 3D game at the same time while litening to radio…this is perhaps ios biggest limitation…it can only do one heavy task at a time…
I don’t know about you guys…but when we say “smartphone” …shouldn’t it be able to do multi-tasking…? This is why I’m sticking to my iphone 4s…although it also cannot multi-task…atleast it has a balanced screen and is still highly respected by apple fans…unlike the iphone 5 which has received the lowest rating ever in the history of iphone…an average of 6.7…it did not even get a 7…while all other apple products got atleast an 8 or 9
Iphone 5 is an utter failure by Tim Cook’s Apple…I miss the days when Steve Jobs wowed the world with each Apple convention…I guess the Apple’s bite went sour after he died.
Who wants to download while playing a game, browsing facebook and listening to the radio? That sounds utterly compulsive and a dumb reason to dislike a device. When I’m on facebook, I’m on facebook- simple as that. When I’m playing a game or watching a movie, that’s what I’m doing. Your complaint sounds more personal and bitter than anything else- most people aren’t doing all that at once.
Then why have a computer? Can a computer not browse Facebook while downloading a game? Can it not have multiple tabs? Can it not listen to music while typing an essay? You are the true fan boy with your flawed, illogical and hateful comments. Most people ARE doing all that at once. So you are saying, on a computer, you have never done anything else simultaneously while on Facebook? Now you are the utter, compulsive liar. And concerning the comments on which you accuse people of lying when they claim they have the S3 and the iPhone, only a person who can’t afford both would make such a claim. Personally and realistically, there are a lot of people who can afford both.
Reasons to buy iPhone:
Stability: iOS is a MUCH MUCH more stable OS. it has limitations, but you will RARELY have any errors using the apps. And you can download as many apps to the device as you want, and the phone will operate the same.
Gaming: If you are interested in gaming on your phone, the App Store is hands down the best place to download games. Yes, they cost. But they are actually GOOD games. Plus you still have all the free games people love because they’re too cheap to buy a game.
Music: Although downloading “free” music is available easily on android. The music player is a different story. The player used in the iOS software is amazing, bug free, and the “shuffle” feature actually works perfect.
Build Quality: It doesn’t matter where the parts of the iPhone come from, Apple designs the phone to perfection. No other phone on the market is even close to the quality Apple brings to the table, except the HTC One, and its FAR from the same quality.
Accessories: If you like having a wide selection of accessories for your device, iPhone wins here. There are too many new Android phones surfacing every other month for aftermarket companies to invest in designing accessories for all of these different phones.
Customer Service: This is probably the most overlooked reason to choose iPhone. When you have a problem with your device, you call Apple. End of discussion. With Android phones, you may have to call the Manufacturer of the phone, Google, your carrier, the third party app developer.
Reasons to buy Android:
Selection: Android has MANY different price points for devices. You can get an entry level Android for as low as FREE with 2 year contract, and it goes all the way up to the same price as the iPhone. While the less expensive android devices are normally painfully slow, they at least have that option. Some people may not need an 8 megapixel camera and 2GB of ram.
Customizable: One of the coolest things about Android is the ability to customize nearly anything on the phone. From fonts to widgets. Custom background images, multiple home screens, many color schemes, different UI’s, etc. Much easier to create and edit ringtones, just a unlimited amount of custom things you can do, and this is factory, even before rooting the device.
Notifications: iOS has gotten better, but still far behind. Android does notifications to a T. easier to access the notifications, reminders on top of the screen, more notification adjustments.
External SD: While this isn’t really that big of an advantage, for some it is. Most people would never use more than 64GB of memory, but with some Android devices, you have the ability to have 80GB of storage. For a much cheaper price.
Multitasking: Android devices can multitask. Some UI’s are awesome at it as well, HTC is hands down the best.
Beyond these reasons, and there are some I’m leaving out for sure. But past these issues, it’s really personal preference. It’s like Nike vs. Reebok. Which one is really better? No one can answer that correctly. Nike might make a better running shoe, but a cleat, Reebok might win. I sell phones for an unnamed carrier, so I get to see the latest and greatest of both. Personally. I use both. If I had to choose just one, based on my needs, it would be iPhone. Here are my reasons…
No force closing
no UI lag
App and game choices
iTunes
Build quality
Siri
Maybe this will help someone make a choice. But if you do choose an Android device, do not settle for the “free” phones, you get what you pay for.
Well done. Maybe next time the “author” of this article can reach out to you for some actual information prior to their next “article.”
Great none biased review. Bravo:) Informative, intelligent, no stupid name calling. And real world fact based.. specs mean NOTHING apple has been proving this for decades with the mac. I’ve never owned one, but I know enough about them to know this. Just wanted to give you a high five for this article:) Boils down to this.. ford or chevy, michigan or michigan state. Go with what suits YOU and shut up about what is BEST.
Only thing I would agree with is perhaps the build quality (that too is debatable due to the alumunium scatching flaws).
No FCing? = apple returns to homescreen on a crash, with no error message to hide the fact
no ui lag = tried jelly bean yet?
app and game choices = ios may have some better games (really few in fact), android has way more usable apps (tasker, permissions manager, firewall, backup utilities) and is cheaper in almost every aspect
itunes = how is that a plus? ever tried setting a ringtone? Perhaps, you never heard of dropbox? airdroid?
siri = ever heard of google voice? it’s so much faster and more accurate than siri, even the new iphone 5 siri sucks compared to google voice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xculyWqTYMw
One should note you can get the Samsung Galaxy S3 for $99.99 (and no tax if you buy it today)
1.OS- they both use totally different OS so you can really compare and say which one is better. One OS might offer stuff the other doesn’t but that doesn’t make it better. It’s like comparing MAC and WINDOWS, they are bother completely different OS and offer different things and have there own uniqueness. Some people like Mac more and some like Windows more, but you can’t say one is better than the other, again, it’s because they are different.
2.Processor- Both duo core, S3 1.5 GHZ vs iphone 1.4ghz(unconfirmed) .1 GHZ not much of a diff
3.Screen size- Bigger doesnt mean better, it’s all preference
4.Display- LCD vs AMOLED again it’s preference. Some people don’t like the brighter brights and the deeper darks, so they go with LCD. Some people do so they go with AMOLED. Some people have more sensitive eyes to the AMOLED some don’t. It all depends one the PERSON.
5.NFC- Honestly NFC doesn’t seem that great to me. If I have an S3 I would only be able to xfer data and pics to my friends if they too have an S3, well what if all my friends have friggin flip phones. And the NFC to pay thing doesn’t work everywhere, in fact only 2% of businesses have NFC compatibility capabilities.
6.Camera- both have same front camera. The S3 has a better front camera, in fact twice as much, but doesn’t mean its good, in fact it sucks(iphone too). It’s like saying you have one dollar and I have two, so I am in every way superior to you.
7.Memory- the MicroSD on the S3 doesn’t apply to everyone, because not everyone used that much memory. That said, S3 having MicroSd capabilities doesnt make it better than Iphone unless everyone use more than 32GB(assuming this is the avg memory people buy)
8. Okay S3 beats Iphone with battery life.
I forgot to mention 4G LTE.
Just because the Galaxy released LTE before the Iphone does not make its LTE better than the Iphone. So what If Iphone released it a year later( or years later even), the fact is that it has it now and is not inferior or superior to any other 4G phone.
Okay sorry, also forgot to mention Siri and Google voice(or w/e you call it). You Can’t say Google Voice destroys Siri when you don’t even know how good the new siri will be when it comes out. It may be better than Siri right now but guess what, the new siri that is being released with the Iphone is an improved version of it. You cannot compare Google voice to siri when you don’t even know how good(or bad) the new Siri will be yet.
I’m just sad for all apple users. Just got my new S3 and I love it, I mean, come on! after all this time, all you come up with is making the fr***ing phone longer? S3 has waaaay lot more features than iphone and kicks it’s *ss by a lot.
love my S3
Every new phone is nice and has its own character. I’d like to own several nice phones like I own several nice cars, several nice watches to drive to wear on different days of the week, but the problem is that I only need one phone number. Having said that, I wish phone carriers can invent a way to make one phone number work on different phones. I will use Samsung on Monday, Apple on Tuesday, Nokia on Wednesday, Blackberry on Thursday, … When Windows 8 comes out, I’ll get one phone with it, too, to use on the weekend. When the phone carriers can handle one phone number on multiple phones, I will be happy, the phone makers will live happily thereafter. Peace!
I know what you’re trying to say, but this does exist already in the form of SIM cards. You just can’t use phones that aren’t compatible with your current network (GSM only).
you can already do this – just swap the sim card from one phone to another an voila! This of course would not work with an iPhone as Apple uses a different sim than every other phone manufacturer…
Not to mention the case is sealed from its owner and if you open it you void the warranty. But almost every android you can open the back and change the battery, change miniSD cards as well as the SIM.
Does anyone know if Samsung has anything comparable to Siri on the Iphone?
Samsung has S-Voice but it’s not that good, but they also have Google Voice which just destroys Apple’s Siri.
This was answered earlier in the comments section – scroll down :-)
With Jelly Bean Update coming Google Now is far better than Siri
I own a iPhone 4s and a Samsung galaxy sII. I cannot see how anyone can compare the two, there’s no competition at all. The iPhone smashes samsung in every single aspect. Samsung is laggy, apps crash, the touch isn’t responsive that great, the typing & texting is terrible with it’s autocorrect. I just can’t stand using it at all, iPhone has a much nicer overall use to it by far. I assume the exact same will be with the iPhone 5 and S3. No competition at all. Apple > Samsung.
Yes Michelle, because this article was comparing the iPhone 4s and the Samsung Galaxy S2. Please learn how to read before you go on talking about your personal experience on two phones that are not applicable to the discussion/statistically irrelevant. This article is comparing newer phones, the recently unveiled iPhone 5 and the already introduced Samsung Galaxy S3. I signed up for a digital trends account because I was that perplexed/appalled at your irrelevant comment.
My comment is relevant you twat, my point of comparing those two previous phones is the comparison of the overall quality that the companies produce in their phones. Hence my last sentence of apple over samsung, not the iphone 4s over samsung s2. THE COMPANY. I then went on to say that the exact same will probably be for the iphone 5, making it better than samsung s3. Since iPhone 4s was better than s2, because, once again, my main point, Apple produces better quality products then that of Samsung. I’m sorry you can’t understand.
we can all understand, your an iFan, plain and simple…you obviously haven’t even touched an S3.
lol. In case you didn’t know you “TWAT” samsung makes apple iPhone 4s “A-5″ chip, alongg with other Apple features on the iPhone 4s. Talk about quality products. Obviously you don’t know what quality is. GS2- GS3 smashes iPhone’s products period.
i dont own either..but Michelle’s comment seem fair to me.. at least she actually point out why she thinks Apple > Samsung/Android, unlike most apple fanboys who give no reasons at all..
can someone address Michelle’s comment about Samsung (which I assume is a good proxy for Android in general) being “laggy”, and apps crashing? agree or disagree on these points?
Wow — the S3 is lots bigger — but since it virtually disappears in your pocket, I’d guess you would not even know you have the smaller, thinner, lighter iPhone 5. I was disappointed that the S3 didn’t have AMOLED Plus, but LCD? And more pixels on the S3?
Overall the iPhone 5 looks like a decent phone, but not enough to scare Google / Verizon into getting me my Jelly Bean update. It probably will become the best selling smartphone — there are a lot of Apple loyalists who have waited through the 4S to get here. C’mon Apple, Google, Samsung, HTC, et. al. — consumers want brutal, innovative competition that will keep getting us great products.
Sorry, the iPhone is till the best selling smartphone. Will be again this year as well.
*still
Given all the press coverage of this phone, you would expect a great revolutionary product and not just a stretch version of an old and obsolete design of an iPhone 4. Where is the innovation in that? Surely, Apple is not going to call this minor update an innovation and expect their customer to suck up that line again? Look like their only strategy these days (post Job) is playing catch up with their competitors in terms of products development and delivery.
“Apple is not going to call this minor update an innovation and expect their customer to suck up that line again? ” – They just did and their customers will buy it.
Well, I thought more faith in these people and give them the benefit of the doubt
crapple copied the back design from HTC, they should sue crapple
People like you make me lose faith in humanity.
the specs that everyone talks about? which of them actually make a difference?
better chip? as a current user of ICS on my tablet, and ios on my phone, I definitely think that my iPhone runs much smoother.
NFC? You cant seriously tell me google wallet is a real factor, yet at least.
Expandable memory? I have a 32GB iPhone and am not even close to filling that.
Im trying to find a good reason to switch over to the galaxy, but the most common arguments I keep hearing is about these specs, and iPhone lovers are just “fanboys”, its a pretty big turn off
I think apples app store is far superior to google play. And there is no comparison if you take aesthetics into account. The galaxy S3 shouldn’t be plastic. I dont know how any music app could compare with the iphones music app.
Im sorry for bringing this up a few times today, but I really would love to get a few more opinions. I do plan on going into a store and testing out the s3,
You seem to be biased towards the iphone as you stated you are trying to find a good reason to switch over to the galaxy but afraid what others might think of you cause someone said iphone lovers are fanboys and it turnes you off lol. Go to apples website and write down the specs for the iphone5 then look up the specs for the S3 there is nothing to compare the iphone is not even in the same ballpark as the s3. You admit no music app can compare to itunes and there simply is no comparision if you take aesthetics into account? This is why people call the sheep that like ibones fanboys! Fanboys is simply a term used to describe someone whom looks are more important than function and most of the time they prefer “domestic partners” over a spouse as well lol
I have been with the iPhone since day one and I have the galaxy 2 and the 3 and I just love it. I could write all night about all the features widgets, reading my voice mails w google, google now, the size, changing the battery. I have 6 daughters and and wife and our entire family had iPhones, they’ve all switched. My wife has the galaxy note, two daughters have the galaxy 3. I guarantee if you played with the galaxy 3 for a week there’s no way you would go back :)
Poweramp is one of the best music apps out there 0.0
No one is mentioning the factory conditions in which these phones are made. And on that front, Apple is by far the clear leader in demanding worker rights and pay. These past two weeks have been very bad for Samsung, in light of six of their own factories were found to have abusive practices. It’s estimated it will cost them millions to fix, so expect costlier Samsung phones next year.
OMG, why am I not surprised someone called veggiedude tries to protray apple as the healer of the “free world” As we all know apple treats its employee’s with the utmost respect and pays them all generous salarys. “Apple is by far the clear leader in demanding worker rights and pay” ? dude put down the pipe you are delusional!
Ad hominem. You just attacked Veggiedude and your comment is completely unproductive in its nature, you have only proved yourself incapable of coherent discussion by not only outwardly hating on Veggiedude, but more importantly by not providing even a hint at any logic behind why you hate him.
As soon as apple made a cheap shot at samsung you know samsung is better Apple lost by their dirty mouth
Great to find a side by side comparison! …but need a bit more details to be able to really compare the two. How do you compare processor performance? LCD vs. AMOLED? How is the Max Speed calculated and what makes one faster than the other? (By the way, I’m assuming they are referring to download speed in Mbps.) Lastly, do I care as a consumer if one has EV-DO Rev A vs. GSM? Not being facetious–really don’t know.
Other than those specs, for me it’s about battery life, external SD storage and OS preference.
Yup, the article will be updated once we can do a real world performance test. That takes more than an hour of hands-on.
Okay, so who decided to fudge the photos to make the iPhone 5 look larger than the Galaxy S3? Why even bother to alter the photos at all? Isn’t the iPhone 5 “perfect” the way it REALLY is? Why would you guys do that unless you were trying to deceive readers? If I were trying to sell the BMW Mini, and I blew up the picture to look larger than a Cadillac Escalade, wouldn’t that be deceptive? Just sayin.
You dont need a hands on comparison to make that honest correction do you? This is how they really look next to each other:

I await your hands-on comparison with the S3 and iPhone 5, because from my perspective they cannot really be compared. Sure, the iPhone 5 is a nice phone and a great smartphone, but it hardly leads the pack and falls behind considerably in many areas.
The iPhone 5 only looks better as compared to the iPhone 4S, not compared to other phones in the market.
I really see nothing in favor of the new iphone 5.
The retina screen is not gonna help much on a 4″ screen, S3′s higher resolution is the better deal.
S3 got larger screen and resolution, and only a fraction more heavy than iphone 5.
And if you buy the iphone 5 and later realized you need more memory, your only choice is to buy a new one!
Wasn’t the new iphone supposed to be a revolution? I guess the revolution would be it’s technically worse than competing phones already on the market for over 3 months.
I’m starting to sound like a real apple fanboy with all of my comments. It’s hard to find some die-hard fanboy to play devil’s advocate with online, it’s all “crapple” and “fandroid” these days due to the restriction-less universe of android which allows you to “do so much more”. This new iphone is simply a spec refresh for apple’s flagship (and only) phone, it’s on the same level as the S3. The issues you bring up do hold the iPhone 5 back though, although most are impractical enough not to be an issue like screen size being a preference based kind of thing and memory being replaced by cloud storage with the superfast networks of today.
But don’t take me wrong, there really is nothing outstanding about the new iPhone. Except maybe build quality…? And even then it’s based on personal preference.
And what happens when u drop the iPhone?
after owning three of them, I can tell you, they shatter!
Well there are things called otterboxes for butterfingers who drop their phones. It’s not like any phone with a glass screen is immune to shattering upon being dropped.
Most Samsungs are. Drop an S3 from 20 feet and it will still be unscratched. Try that with an iPhone and you will have iShards.
^Lol sorry wasn’t directed at chu
D.k. Sama don’t hate
It’s all about personal preference. Two different OS, take your pick. Apple has the fanboys that will buy everything Apple…then there are the Apple haters that don’t like anything Apple. Don’t be a sheep, make your own choice. I use Android because I like it. Doesn’t mean I have to go out and buy the latest one.
*have
Bunch of apple haters.. if you the the s3 and you like it good for you if you want the i5 good for you everyone has their own reasons to like one or the other we won’t all agree ever.
That is correct , but it just gets annoying when apple users still think that it’s a better phone on paper it’s not it’s just preference
Isnt this a specs showdoen article? In that context, Apple loses big time, in the first 10 seconds of the first round, hands down. Now preference is another thing completely. Many people still prefer snail mail over email. They like the taste of postage stamp adhesive, they live having decorative letter openers and going to their mailbox for unknown treasures in those envelopes.
The problem with Apple buyers is that they think they are somehow getting the best technology available (because Apple says so), but they have to LIE and deceive to achieve that goal. The Galaxy S3 is simply a more powerful, higher spec phone than any iPhone. Preference has nothing to do with it.
THEY DEFINITELY wont say the competition…duuuh
3310 is the best smartphone. =)))))
