It’ll most likely come as no surprise at all that Samsung is rumored to be working on another Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet hybrid to replace the Note 2, and perhaps equally as unsurprising is the prospect of it having an even larger screen than the previous two incarnations. The first Galaxy Note arrived two years ago and sported what was at the time, a gigantic 5.3-inch screen, before being succeeded by the 5.5-inch Note 2 in August last year.
According to the Korea Times, a Samsung spokesperson has confirmed the Galaxy Note 3 will have a 5.9-inch screen, and it’ll be based on OLED technology. The continued increase in screen size fits in not only with Samsung’s strategy with the Note, but also with its Galaxy S range too. If other rumors turn out to be true, the Galaxy S4 will have a 4.99-inch screen, up from the 4.8-inch display found on the S3.
Samsung may also be feeling the pressure to go large from rivals such as Huawei and ZTE. Huawei launched the Ascend Mate during CES 2013, a truly enormous device with a 6.1-inch screen – which feels quite ridiculous when held – and ZTE showed the 5.7-inch Grand Memo off at Mobile World Congress. Next to these two, the Galaxy Note 2 looks, well, normal.
While the Chinese pair may do some damage to Samsung in certain territories, it’ll be more concerned about the LG Optimus G Pro, which is about to be released around the world. Like the Note 2, it has a 5.5-inch screen, but it also has a 1080p resolution and many similar software features Samsung loves to think makes the Note 2 standout. What it doesn’t have is a stylus though.
The Korea Times’ source also said the Note 3 would be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa processor, which is becoming increasingly likely to debut in the Galaxy S4 next week, but added the big device wouldn’t have a flexible screen. A previous report also indicated the Note 3 would use the eight-core chip, but put the possible screen size as 6.3-inches, bringing it ever closer in size to Samsung’s smallest tablets. Despite all this big talk, this is still nothing but a rumor, although we’d say a Note 3 arriving later this year is a safe bet. There’s no indication when we could see the phone, but sometime after summer seems logical.
Anyone making negative comments about the size of the Note 2 or Note 3 is ignorant. I have owned my Note 2 since release and honestly find my phone smaller than I prefer. I will gladly welcome larger. The few phone calls I make are not uncomfortable and it works fine. Naysayers are full of crap and just trolling.
You said the few calls that you make. So you prefer using it for other things than calling? I use my phone for calls 90% of the time that I use it. I prefer something under 5 inches. People who don’t like what you like are not “trolling” or full of it as you so eloquently stated it.
Yes I use my Note 2 for everything under the sun and phone calls make up the minority of how I use it. I was initially doing research to see if it was possible to use an actual tablet as a phone, but aside from a European version of Samsung’s Note the answer was no. Not counting Skype etc. Cell phone data plans are far better than the data plan you would get under a tablet etc., plus in those rare emergencies where you need a dedicated phone without having to rely on internet phone services the cell phone part of the “phablet” was important.
So for me, with respects to devices that are true cell phones, in order of importance:
1) Brand – Samsung
2) Size
3) Specifications
I put the brand part in there in case someone wanted to mention Huawei hehe.
To directly respond to your post though Bea if you use your device a vast majority of your time simply as a cell phone it doesn’t make sense to me why you would be jumping into a conversation about the Note 2/Note 3 which is a device for people who are power users and want versatility.
5.9 is just way too big. it’s still in the 5 inch category yeah but i dnno. just dont know who will want to run around with a big block in their pocket/jacket. I can see yeah for business people but your average civillian guy walking around using it as a everyday phone= not cool
I carry my 7 inch Galaxy tab 2 everywhere and to me, 5.9 is not too big. I wish my tablet had calling capabilities. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it…it is not too big for other people.
you obviously got issues. it may sound harsh but yeah you do, you carry your tablet around im sure in a case and packed away in your bag. No one walks around all day carrying a tablet in public. On a bus/train/plane ofcourse but I know for sure you don’t carry a tablet around in your hand like it’s a phone all day, if you do you got issues….anyhow yeah 5.9 would be too big of a phone to carry it around as a phone. The current galaxy notes are already too big to carry around in your hands freely. I know I tried that once and people was like wtf is that a tablet lolllll you just look like a big goof ball carrying a big phone like that. Tablets go in your bag and phones are usually in your left hand or side pocket when walking. Hmmp
Why are you so concerned about what other people say about you? I borrowed my buddies GN2 and loved it, especially when watching streaming video. Most comments were positive but I wouldn’t care what looks “cool” or not. I have full sized man hands, no problems with functionality whatsoever. I also love my GS3..will never go back to smaller screen.
Good luck letting other people’s opinions determine your consumer choices.
You sound insecure when asking why I care about what others say….sounds like a fanboy. Besides the fact is this phone is too big already to carry around like a normal phone….I’m military so it does matter, I can.picture some idiot outside standing around looking like a big goof…..just a opinion but sometimes you might want to care about what others think, you don’t wanna be a guy looking all jacked up
Actually I don’t care..you are the one making the references to other’s perception of what you carry in your hand. The fact that millions of GN2s and GN3s have already been sold must mean that it’s not too large for the masses. People will buy what works for them…and don’t care how it looks to others.
Why did you need to watch video out in public so others would see and comment?
I watch videos and movies wherever I choose..that’s why I bought a phone with a large, high resolution screen. I wouldn’t care if people have some sort of negative judgement of that. Actually, the comments and questions I get have been all positive.
I know right
He does not have issues. I carry my tablet with me quite a but in public. There is bothibg wrong with that. I prefer it. Makes it so I can have a dedicated internet/game device and one for texting/calls. With both devices in public I can go at least 18 hours+ with no charge and still have battery life. I am sure you do plenty of stuff people judge you by. You should really think about how you judge others. And I for sure do not care what someone thinks of me. Their opinion is theirs. I have my own as well. You sound very judgemental based on what you see. It is people like you that give us all bad reputation. But I dont care about what people think so you can keep on making yourself look dumb.
K
I Completely agree with John. Me to thinking of buying NOTE 3 or NOTE 8.0 as this tablet has calling facility… :)
how are you qualified to determine “cool” or “issues” for other people except for your low self esteem and ability to write sentences together?
Sniff sniff* someone sounds upset st the truth……..next
wow. you must know that youre so tragically cool than everyone else within your personal space. enjoy your glow.
Thanks
