Minimo: Mozilla for your Cell Phone?

The Mozilla Foundation has released a previous of Minimo, a Web browser for Windows CE mobile phones which uses the same technology as the Firefox Web browser.

Doug Turner has released Minimo 0.007 for mobile devices via the Mozilla Foundation, a preview release of a Web browser for Windows CE built on the same technology as the popular Firefox Web browser. Minimo is intended to be a slimmed-down Web browser for portable devices sporting 32 to 64 MB of RAM, and is currently being developed for Microsoft’s Windows CE portable operating system.

Minimo is still in early development stages, but the latest version adds support for tabbed browsing and support for browser plug-ins.

By basing a lightweight browser on the Mozilla codebase, Minimo hopes to inherit a strong degree of standards support, features, international compatibility, and security which will enable it to interact fully with complex, modern Web sites while retaining a small footprint. Minimo is currently being developed for Windows CE, but versions are planned for Microsoft’s SmartPhone and PocketPC platforms, as well as ARM devices such as the Compaq iPaq. There are currently no plans to port to the Palm platform.
