Be the Overseer when ‘Fallout 4: Vault-Tec Workshop’ launches this month

Fallout 4 has already seen a number of substantial DLC packs since it launched in November, including the robot-focused Automatron expansion and the spooky mystery of Far Harbor. The game’s next expansion, Vault-Tec Workshop, won’t be giving you new missions to conquer or enemies to blast, but it will let you become the all-knowing Overseer in just a few weeks.

Just like with the mobile (and now PC) game Fallout Shelter, you’ll be able to build your own vault from scratch in Vault-Tec Workshop. Vault dwellers are equipped with the weapons they need to take out invading forces, such as those pesky Radscorpions, but you have quite a bit more control over your dwellers than was possible in Fallout Shelter.

“Like every good Overseer, run Vault-Tec approved experiments on your dwellers to learn what makes an ideal citizen,” Bethesda says. “Vault-Tec has given you the tools, the rest is up to you!”

This may open up the door for more morally gray options than we saw in the mobile game. While Shelter allowed you to breed your dwellers and send them off on missions where they would face certain death, it never allowed you to be truly cruel to them. Given the complaints about the limitations in the dialogue system, this might be a chance to let your character have a little more character.

Vault-Tec Workshop is scheduled to release on July 26 for $5 — with closed beta keys being sent out this week — but it will not be the last piece of Fallout 4 DLC. That comes in August with the release of Nuka-World. The $20 expansion will take you to the Nuka-World amusement park filled with classic attractions like “Dry Rock Gulch” and “Kiddie Kingdom.” What a simple time it was before the bombs dropped.

The best Fallout 4 settlements and structures

Fallout 4 is a big game. Not only is the world massive, packed to the brim with all manner of interesting quests, characters, and locations to discover, but it also sports a number of other gameplay systems that take your adventure beyond the usual exploration that Bethesda's RPGs are known for. Most notable among these is the settlement feature.

Not content to simply provide players with a method for crafting their own gear and weaponry, Fallout 4 features a robust set of tools that empowers players to create their own post-apocalyptic settlement. Whether that manifests as a sustainable farm of crops and mutated livestock or a fortified fortress in the ruins of Boston is entirely up to you. These creation tools are highly flexible, too, and have produced some impressively creative structures from the Fallout 4  fanbase. Throw in a few mods and exploits of the game's buggy framework, and the possibilities become seemingly unlimited. We've searched the internet for some of the biggest, most intricate, and most creative Fallout 4 settlements and structures out there to help inspire your inner Frank Lloyd Wright.
