Seven Ubisoft games you can play for free this weekend

Ubisoft has been celebrating its 30th anniversary for the past few months by giving away some of its games to any and all who want them. This weekend is no different, but it is the last time these titles will be available without a price tag, so grab them now while you can.

The “Special Weekend” event is being run though the company’s Ubisoft Club platform, so you will need an account to access the games, but it’s quite a selection of titles. Freely available for the next few days are: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Rayman Origins, The Crew, Beyond Good and Evil, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Assassin’s Creed III.

That’s quite a good spread of different types of games. There are some stealth-focused titles, some action and platformers, and a fun, ’80s inspired shooter, too. There should be something for everyone in there.

To secure your own copies of these games, head into your Ubisoft Club account, or create one and then click the “Get your Bundle,” link (thanks TechSpot). From there, all games will automatically be added to your account and you can download and play them through Uplay at your leisure. Alternatively, you can wait and play them later; they aren’t going anywhere, they are yours to keep forever.

If you’re not feeling up to the strenuous task of clicking a few links right now, or for whatever reason don’t want all of those games, you will have a little longer to claim Assassin’s Creed III. That particular title will still be up for grabs until the end of December. Of course that’s not quite as impressive a giveaway as this one, so if you anticipate wanting to play any of the above titles in the future, make sure you register them now to avoid any regrets.

You know that it's a busy year for gaming when a project by an industry legend launches with hardly any fanfare. That's exactly what happened in February 2023 with Akka Arrh. Created by Jeff Minter and his eccentric studio Llamasoft, the neon-tinted shooter is a remake of a 1982 Atari game that never saw the light of day after being deemed too difficult. Minter got the greenlight to revive the project, bringing it to life as a retro arcade shooter built in his unmistakable style.

While the project was exciting for game historians, it didn't exactly crack into the mainstream (it only has 37 user reviews on Steam). Thankfully, Akka Arrh getting a second chance to shine this week as its new PlayStation 5 version adds PlayStation VR2 support. While that might not be enough to make it a commercial hit, it does give PSVR2 owners a good reason to dust off their headset and check out a delightfully oddball project from one of gaming's true visionaries.
It's a trip
Akka Arrh is the rare example of a game that might be easier to explain on paper than in practice. In this throwback arcade shooter, players control a stationary ship that's tasked with protecting pods from attacking aliens. To fend off foes, players drop bombs that blow up in a different geometric pattern on each level's map. Every time an enemy touches that blast radius, it blows up in the same pattern, chaining to other enemies. The goal is to keep an uninterrupted chain going as long as possible by using a limited number of bullets to knock out foes that can't be destroyed by bombs and grabbing power-ups by hovering the cursor over them.

Hello Games released the Omega update for No Man's Sky today and is making the sci-fi game free-to-play temporarily to celebrate.

The main draw of the Omega update is that it incorporates cooperative expeditions into the main game experience rather than relegating them to a side mode. The Omega expedition was added to the game today, and tasks players with exploring and charting every inch of the planet Nafut Gamma. Completing this expedition will reward players with a limited-edition helmet and staff Multi-Tool, and players can carry over any resources gained during it. While this change is the biggest addition of the Omega update, it's far from the only notable change.

The Nintendo Switch Lite is the smaller, more affordable sibling of the standard Nintendo Switch. This makes it a great option for frugal shoppers, as it's capable of playing all the same games yet carries a much friendlier price tag. However, the Switch Lite doesn't share all the same features as the standard Switch. A big difference is that it won't fit in a traditional Switch dock.
