Stand among the most influential icons in the 'Civilization' board game

There’s something about playing a board game based off a well-loved franchise, and video game adaptations are no different. From Fantasy Flight Games comes ‘Sid Meier’s Civilization: A New Dawn,’ a reimagining of the classic strategy PC game. Just like its counterpart, the Civilization board game is all about culture, conquest, and diplomacy.

A New Dawn is a strategy board game for two to four players, who act as some of history’s most memorable rulers. From Teddy Roosevelt to Montezuma, players must construct and populate the map with barbarians, natural resources, and city-states. Each leader comes with a unique ability to help shape the world in line with certain ideologies. While everyone starts off in similar ways, each person’s exact goals change with every game. These agendas are detailed on victory cards. Players draw three and then race to complete one agenda on each of their cards.

Throughout the game, players travel through time, from ancient history to the modern day. As leaders expand their cities into empires, their nation develops through accomplishments such as scientific advances, cultural developments, and military production. At the same time, leaders must also deal with world events such as barbarian attacks. These can wreck a nation’s economy or crumble it to dust if players are not prepared.

True to the nature of the franchise, the Civilization board game challenges players with tactical decisions and with the need to make their empire less insular. By sending caravans to city-states and rival cities, players earn trade tokens that can be spent to increase the effects of focus cards. More information about the game structure can be found at Fantasy Flight Games.

This Civilization board game isn’t the first video game to be adapted by Fantasy Flight Games. Another strategy game, XCOM: The Board Game is a take on the popular turn-based game. The Fallout board game is another option for those looking for some exploration and role-playing. For a big departure, Doom: The Board Game takes away the frantic pace of this first-person shooter and slows it down into a tactical fight.

Sid Meier’s Civilization: A New Dawn is available for pre-order directly from Fantasy Flight Games or from game shops for $50. Expect the game to hit shelves in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Amazon's video game sales are notable and fairly frequent, but that isn't the only type of game you can save on through the retailer. Amazon is currently offering big savings on some of the most popular strategy board games around, but the deals are only good for today. We think it would be a wise strategy to take advantage of them before they're gone.
Ultimate Werewolf Deluxe

Among the biggest board games being offered through the promotion is Ultimate Werewolf Deluxe Edition, which can be played with up to 74 other people. In the game, you attempt to deduce who among you is an evil monster and must choose someone to eliminate -- just hope you don't guess incorrectly. The Deluxe Edition pack includes expansion with further roles for werewolves and hunters, and a timer app is available to help keep the action moving. The game is normally available for $25, but you can buy it right now for less than $10.

3 underrated PS Plus games you should play this weekend (May 3-5)
The main character of Tales of Kenzera: Zau stands with two elemental items.

PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra have been around for almost two years, and during that time the subscription service has established itself as an ample competitor to Xbox Game Pass. That means there is a wealth of great games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners to check out if they're looking for something to play this weekend. I think PS Plus subscribers should be looking toward some of the more underrated games in the subscription service this weekend too.

I have three particular picks in mind. The first is an enjoyable Metroidvania that came to PS Plus' game catalog when it launched just a couple of weeks ago and deserves a lot more attention than it's getting. After that, there's an action-platformer that pays homage to series like Ninja Gaiden that you should check out before it leaves the catalog. Finally, there's a PS2-era Star Wars game that fills the niche a recently canceled game would have.

Three phone screens with the PlayStation Stars app.

I wouldn't blame you if you forgot PlayStation Stars existed. In fact, I would guess the majority of people out there have no idea what that even is, but PlayStation's reward program deserves more attention than it's getting.

Launched in the summer of 2022, PlayStation Stars is a program meant to reward players for engaging with the PlayStation ecosystem. You can take on challenges to earn digital collectibles and, more importantly, coins that can be redeemed for games, store credit, and some premium in-game currencies.
