Material Design 2 update spruces up Google Photos — here’s how to get it

Whether you love it or hate it, Material Design 2 has become Google’s core style with the release of Android 9.0 Pie, and the internet giant has wasted no time in updating its core apps to reflect the change in style. Google Photos is the latest app to get the design refresh, and like the earlier updates to Android Messages, Google Contacts, and Google Phone, the style changes are sure to cause comment in the Android community.

The changes are broadly in line with what we’ve come to expect from Material Design 2. The bolder-colored header bars and titles of the previous Material Design have been removed, and simpler design with stark white has replaced it. Gentle curves have replaced hard angles, and the boldly colored buttons have gone, replaced by softer pastel colors. The buttons on the bottom row have also been tweaked, with the darker gray areas being removed in favor of a simpler black-and-white design. Finally, the previously gray navigation bar now matches the app’s white color. As a whole, the changes help to open the app up, and make it feel less enclosed.

Aside from these changes in appearance, there’s precious little to report from the update, and it seems that no major features have been added. Android Police reports that users can now access a photo’s info by swiping up on the image, but also noted some major inconsistencies with the gesture triggering. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to trigger this new feature at all, and can only assume it’s a work in progress on Google’s part.

If you want to check out Google Photos’ new look, the update is said to be rolling out. However, if you don’t want to wait for the update to reach your region, you can manually update your app by sideloading the new APK. To do so, just head to APK Mirror’s site for this new update, select the correct APK, and manually install it to your phone. If you need a bit more guidance, you can check out our guide on how to sideload an app on your Android phone or tablet.

Google Photos leans into video with latest Memories update
how to switch from iphone android google photos albums 1 768x768

Google Photos is a great way to organize pictures and share your memories with others, and the free update rolling out later today is focusing entirely on improving the Memories feature by pivoting slightly to favor video content. While the app has often felt like something of an afterthought (due to the many hotly requested features that often go completely ignored by the company), this update actually seems to be making some major strides in improving Memories — even if that means dealing with yet another app pivoting to video.

Now, Memories will be favoring videos to make your memories "come to life" by featuring video clips more heavily and giving a subtle zoom to still images, making them feel much more dynamic than the flat, static pictures previously found on the app. Cinematic Photos, which launched in 2020, is a visual effect that separates the foreground and background of an image and moves them slightly to create a 3D feel that, following the update, will now be strung together to create Cinematic Memories set to instrumental music.

Google adds a private locked photos folder to iPhones for ‘personal’ photos
Google Photos logo.

Google Photos will soon let iPhone and Android users save their photos behind a biometrically protected locked folder as Google pushes for greater privacy features on mobile. It's a nice way to get some peace of mind and keep sensitive personal photos off the cloud.

Locked Folder is a feature Google introduced for Pixels earlier this year that lets them hide sensitive photos out of view. If a photo is hidden away behind a "locked folder," it won't show up. It's a lot like the hidden album feature on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, but with the benefit of password or biometric protection.  Images in the locked folder also aren't synced to Google Photos, but restricted to the device used. Locked Folder will come to iPhones early next year, while non-Pixel Android users will have it sometime "soon."

Google’s newest Android updates bring accessibility changes and emoji updates
The Google Photos logo.

Google today announced a slew of updates coming to Android this fall. Rolling out starting today, the changes update various facets of Android devices, ranging from accessibility to using your phone when mobile to just plain entertainment.

The major features here for accessibility are Camera Switches and Project Activate. Camera Switches is an Android feature that lets you control your phone with facial expressions by using your front-facing camera as an input method. It first debuted as part of the Android 12 beta, but Google is rolling it out to older Android phones as well this week. As for Project Activate, it's an app that lets you use facial gestures to communicate.
