Square Enix celebrates finishing ‘Kingdom Hearts III’ with extended trailer

KINGDOM HEARTS III – Together Trailer (Closed Captions)

It seemed like Kingdom Hearts III would never see the light of day. Despite remakes, remasters, and numerous “sequels,” the third numbered entry in Square Enix’s role-playing series eluded us for over a decade, but its release is now imminent. In fact, the game is done.

Writing on the official Kingdom Hearts Twitter account November 20, Kingdom Hearts III director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that development has “wrapped up” on Kingdom Hearts III. Alongside the announcement, he also shared an extended trailer that had been playing in movie theaters across North America.

I'm proud to unveil an extended version of the trailer that's been playing in NA cinemas. And guess what? We've wrapped up development of #KingdomHearts III!
If you haven't had the chance yet, now would be a good time to prep by playing 1.5+2.5 & 2.8. See you next month! – Nomura pic.twitter.com/NvZYBut3WI

The “Together Trailer” gives fans and newcomers an idea of what to expect from Kingdom Hearts III‘s story, which takes things in an even darker direction while staying true to its Disney roots. We see fireballs rain down and destroy buildings in Hercules’ home, and elsewhere a massive boulder narrowly misses crushing Goofy, Donald Duck, and Sora.

“Now, the battle between light and dark will reach its epic conclusion,” the trailer’s narrator says.

In addition to the Pixar and Disney animated heroes we’ve seen in the series before, it will also include Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. He was featured in Kingdom Hearts II, but the power of the current-generation consoles gives him a new layer of realism and his voice sounds a whole lot like Johnny Depp. The game will release as rumors swirl that the Pirates franchise will be rebooted, possibly without Depp at the helm. Perhaps Kingdom Hearts III is actually a prequel to the reboot, and will explain how Pluto becomes the new captain.

Other franchises included in Kingdom Hearts III are Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen. If this does end up being the conclusion to the Kingdom Hearts saga, Square Enix and Disney are certainly pulling out all the stops to make it worthwhile.

“For life and light, together we fight,” the narrator says as the trailer ends.

Kingdom Hearts III will release on January 29 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. No other platforms have been announced, but a Deluxe Edition containing a steelbook, art book, and collectible pin is also available for $80.

Nintendo Switch loses an exclusive Square Enix game next month
A duel in the Wild West section of Live A Live.

Square Enix's beautiful HD-2D remake of Live A Live will no longer be a Nintendo Switch exclusive starting next month. The game comes out on PlayStation consoles and PCs on April 27.
Live A Live is a unique grid-based RPG with a fun narrative gimmick. Its story is split up into eight different sections set across eight different sections: Prehistory, The Middle Ages, Imperial China, Twilight of Edo Japan, The Wild West, Present Day, The Near Future, and The Distant Future. Each comes with its own protagonist and gameplay gimmicks before they all crescendo together in a final chapter.

On top of that, this remake of a 1994 SNES game also gives the experience an extreme visual facelift with the HD-2D visuals that make games like Octopath Traveler 2 shine. Digital Trends found the game charming, with George Yang saying Live A Live "has the hallmarks that make it a good entry in the genre" in his three-and-a-half star review of the title.
In North America, Nintendo published the Switch version of Live A Live. Now that the game is coming to other platforms, though, Square Enix has taken back over. To promote the upcoming release, Square Enix has released a demo for Live A Live on PS4 and PS5 today, which lets players try some of the Twilight of Edo Japan, The Distant Future, and The Wild West sections of the game.
Live a Live is available now for Nintendo Switch and will be released for PC, PS4, and PS5 on April 27. PlayStation Plus members can currently preorder the game for a 20% discount as well.

Square Enix Symbiogenesis NFT project disappoints Parasite Eve fans
Logo for Symbiogenesis, an NFT art project by Square Enix.

Square Enix finally revealed Symbiogenesis, a project fans discovered the company filed a trademark for last week. While people speculated that this name would apply to a new Parasite Eve project, fans of that series were disappointed to find out that it's not a new Parasite Eve game, but rather an NFT project.

When Square Enix filed for the Symbiogenesis trademark last week, fans believed that it was related to Parasite Eve despite the trademark not mentioning the game at all. Parasite Eve is a horror RPG series rooted in science and genetics, but it hasn't gotten a new game since The 3rd Birthday in 2010. The term symbiogenesis refers to a scientific theory that involves two organisms combining into a single entity that then continues to grow and evolve with the combined attributes of the original organisms. As this theory is part of the foundation for the original Parasite Eve book the series is based on, it's easy to understand why fans thought there could potentially be a connection.
