The best fantasy movies on Hulu right now (December 2022)

Despite having an impressive catalog of films and TV shows that would be the envy of any other streaming service, Hulu has a distinct weakness when it comes to the fantasy genre. As part of the normal churn of movies coming in and out on a monthly basis, Hulu’s fantasy lineup is largely depleted of some very familiar classics. To be frank, it’s a pretty weak fantasy library at Hulu for now. Regardless, there are still a few fantasy flicks worth checking out on Hulu. And that’s why we’ve updated our list of the best fantasy movies on Hulu right now.

Can’t get enough fantasy in your queue? Be sure to check out our roundups of the best fantasy movies on Netflix and the best fantasy movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Genre Action, Drama, Fantasy
Stars Charlie Hunnam, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Jude Law
Directed by Guy Ritchie
King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword isn’t the traditional Arthurian legend that you may be familiar with. It was an attempt to build out the franchise by giving each major character their own film. But since that shared cinematic universe didn’t take off, we only have the origin story of Arthur, as played by Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam. Decades after Arthur’s uncle, Vortigern (Jude Law), seized the throne of Camelot and murdered Arthur’s parents, the fabled Sword in the Stone surfaces. The Mage (Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey) appears and helps Arthur to emerge from hiding to embrace his destiny and take back the kingdom that is rightfully his.

Santa Claus: The Movie
6.2/10
pg 108m
Genre Family, Fantasy, Adventure
Stars Dudley Moore, John Lithgow, David Huddleston
Directed by Jeannot Szwarc
Santa Claus: The Movie is a bit of a misnomer. It’s actually two movies in one. In the first half of the movie, Claus (David Huddleston) is just a mortal man who loved making and delivering toys to the children of his village before being called upon to do so for the entire world. In the second half of the movie, the narrative moves to the present of 1985, when Santa is exhausted by his never-ending task. Meanwhile, a disgraced elf named Patch (Dudley Moore) is hired by a toy executive, B.Z. (John Lithgow), to co-opt Christmas and make it their own.

Genre Family, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Comedy
Stars Steve Whitmire, Dave Goelz, Bill Barretta

The Muppets by themselves are basically a fantasy — puppets that live in the real human world. But in this zany film, the larger-than-life Muppets go beyond Earth when Gonzo is contacted by his alien family through his cereal. Unfortunately, Gonzo is soon captured by shady government figures to learn more about his alien heritage. This forces Kermit and the gang to rescue Gonzo and reunite him with his family.

Genre Fantasy, Comedy, Drama
Stars Tobey Maguire, Jeff Daniels, Reese Witherspoon, Joan Allen
Directed by Gary Ross
Timelines collide in this modern fairy tale about geeky teenager David (Tobey Maguire) and his cool twin sister, Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon), after they’re accidentally whisked into the black-and-white world of a 1950s TV sitcom called Pleasantville. Everything is just peachy keen all the time in black and white. However, Jennifer’s modern attitude disrupts Pleasantville’s routine existence, literally bringing color into the world. And with all that color comes big new perspectives.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
63 %
6.7/10
pg 109m
Genre Adventure, Comedy, Family, Science Fiction
Stars Martin Freeman, Zooey Deschanel, Sam Rockwell
Directed by Garth Jennings
It may be a bit more sci-fi than fantasy, but The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy will appeal to fans of both genres. Based on the beloved book, the film follows Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) as he’s whisked away by an alien construction crew mere seconds before the destruction of the Earth. He just so happens to have made a fortuitous friendship with Ford Prefect (Mos Def), an alien researcher who is working on a new edition of his guide book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Above the Shadows (2019)

Above the Shadows
6.0/10
111m
Genre Fantasy, Romance
Stars Olivia Thirlby, Alan Ritchson, Jim Gaffigan
Directed by Claudia Myers
In Above the Shadows, Olivia Thirlby stars as Holly, a woman who has literally faded from the seeable world. Invisible for years, her saving grace arrives in the form of a downtrodden MMA fighter named Shayne (Alan Ritchson). When Holly learns that one of her own tabloid photographs contributed to Shayne’s public image demise, she’ll do whatever it takes to restore the fighter to his former glory in an attempt to vanquish her invisibility. A film that demands a firm disconnect from our own reality, Above the Shadows dabbles in fantasy and romance in fitting but larger-than-life ways. The story meanders a bit, and the metaphor’s muddled, but the movie works in more ways than it doesn’t.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (April 2024)
Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You.

Netflix couldn't have asked for a better late April gift than the streaming premiere of Anyone But You. Thanks to Netflix's deal with Sony, 2024's blockbuster rom-com is already on top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix, leaving Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver in second place. But things could be much worse for Rebel Moon – Part Two, which is performing well a week after its debut.

The other new addition for the week is King Richard, a sports drama starring Will Smith that's appearing on loan from Warner Bros. Discovery. It's also one of Netflix's top movies of the week, which suggests that the film may find sustained popularity on this platform that it didn't get on Max.

The best horror movies on Amazon Prime right now
Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby.

Horror movies once had a reputation for being “dumb” films, but the world hasn’t viewed the genre that way for a long time. And whether you’re a fan of psychological thrills, slashers, ghost stories, or any other niche within the bigger pond, one of the best places to catch a horror flick is on Amazon Prime Video.

Several times per year, we comb through the archives of Prime Video to handpick the best genre titles worth watching. Our criteria is pretty tough too, as we don’t want our readers watching the same cookie-cutter genre pics again and again. Still, we do our best to spotlight a handful of classics.
