GDC Game of the Year: Uncharted 2

This week marked the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, and that includes the annual Game Developer Choice Awards. This year’s big winner: Naughty Dog‘s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which collected five trophies, including the coveted Game of the Year award. The wins follow Uncharted 2’s win at the 2009 Spike TV Video Game Awards, where it also took the top prize.

Uncharted 2 is available only for the PlayStation 3, and follows the adventures of treasure-hunter Nathan Drake in a frenetically-paced adventure that’s part Indiana Jones, part James Bond, and part first-person shooter. Uncharted 2 also took honors for best writing, technology, visual art, and audio. The game beat out some notable competition, including Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Asylum (which took best game design), Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed II, From Software’s Demon’s Souls, and BioWare’s Dragon Age: Origins.

Other significant wins at the Game Developer Choice Awards included 5th Cell, whose Scribbelnauts won Best Handheld Game and the Innovation Award. Zynga’s Farmville also won the debut award for Best New Social/Online Game. The Best Downloadble Game award went to thatgamecompany’s Flower, marking the company’s second win in the category: they previously won in 2008 with fl0w.

This PS5 bundle saves you $70 on the console and Spider-Man 2
A PS5 sits on a table.

Gamers who haven't upgraded to the PlayStation 5, this is the offer that you've been waiting for -- the PlayStation 5 Slim Marvel's Spider-Man 2 bundle for only $450 from Best Buy. The console already costs $500 and the game sells for $70, so you're looking at savings of $120 if you purchase this bundle. You're going to have to act fast though -- while the supply issues of the PlayStation 5 are a thing of the past, it still flies off the shelves, so if you don't want to wait for the next restock, you better complete your transaction as soon as possible.

Why you should buy the PlayStation 5 Slim Marvel's Spider-Man 2 bundle
The PlayStation 5 has been updated with the PlayStation 5 Slim, which is more than just a smaller version of the popular console. There's no performance upgrade between these two versions, but you do get slightly more built-in storage at 1TB from 825GB. That translates to usable storage of around 842GB from 667GB, which is nearly 200GB of space that you can fill with installed games, save data, screenshots, and more. The console still comes with the impressive DualSense controller, which offers haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

As the internet raged, game developers at GDC screamed for change
The Moscone Center's North Hall is covered in GDC signage.

For a certain subset of angry gamers planted behind their keyboards, March 18 was just another day in the digital outrage mines.

The video game industry was weeks into its latest “controversy,” this one aimed at a small consulting team called Sweet Baby Inc. The company, which provides writing support for some of the industry’s biggest studios, had become a target for a small but loud group of players over the course of a few months. Their gripe? Sweet Baby Inc was forcing diversity into games through its industry-standard services, which include cultural consulting for studios looking to add more authentic representation into titles like Alan Wake 2. Some spent that Wednesday continuing to rage on sites like X (formerly Twitter) over the nebulous threat of “wokeness” in games, just as they had been for weeks.
