Samsung files countersuit against Apple, claiming 10 wireless tech patent infringements

Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung for allegedly copying its iOS products with the Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets. Samsung responded quickly with promises of a possible countersuit, and now the threat has been made good on.

The South Korean tech company has hit Apple with multiple lawsuits, claiming that the iPhone and iPad infringe on 10 Samsung mobile tech patents. The company is calling for the infringement to stop and compensation, Reuters reports.

The suits, filed in South Korea, Japan and Germany, relate to patents “involving power reduction during data transmission, 3G technology for reducing errors during data transmission and wireless data communication technology.” Samsung had previously hinted that its counter-action would connect to its wireless technology patents being infringed in its initial response to the Apple move.

“Samsung is responding actively to the legal action taken against us in order to protect our intellectual property and to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business,” a statement from the company read.

Making this entire situation trickier is the business relationship that exists between Apple and Samsung alongside their competitive behavior in the mobile market. The iOS developer was one of Samsung’s top customers for semiconductors and display panels in 2010, accounting for roughly four percent of the company’s total revenue for the year. There’s still no word as to whether or not Apple’s access to these supplies will be affected, or what would happen if the flow were suddenly cut off.

Apple’s first HomeView hasn't reached customers yet, but the company is reportedly working on a more ambitious version. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a higher-end model with a roughly 9-inch display mounted on a robotic arm that can rotate a full 360 degrees.

The current $299 HomeView is still on preorder, with deliveries beginning November 13. It uses a fixed 7-inch display on a speaker base, and Apple also sells a wall-mounted version.

Hot on the heels of the Welcome Home event, Apple is preparing to launch another batch of new hardware, and we may now have a better idea of when some of it will actually reach stores. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is planning a retail store “reset” overnight from November 5 into November 6, potentially pointing to a Friday release for at least some of its upcoming Macs.

Earlier reports pointed to an October 27 launch with several Mac updates and a new iPad mini. The lineup could include redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED touchscreens, alongside a separate 14-inch MacBook Pro that keeps the current design but moves to the M6 chip. An updated M6 iMac is also reportedly in the works.
