Rise of the Planet of the Apes wins weekend box office

Hollywood was all about the monkey business this weekend, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes topping the box office with $54 million domestically and $77.4 million worldwide.

Director Rupert Wyatt’s reboot of the Planet of the Apes movie franchise managed to net $14,803 per theater in which the film was screened, according to ComingSoon.net. Not including marketing costs, Rise of the Planet of the Apes cost $93 million to make.

Planet of the Apes‘ strong debut was followed by an impressive second week for The Smurfs, which took the second-place spot at the box office. Cowboys & Aliens fell to the third spot after edging out The Smurfs last weekend.

It’s worth noting that The Smurfs has now earned more than Cowboys & Aliens, pulling in $129 million worldwide compared to $67.4 million for Cowboys & Aliens.

The body-switching comedy The Change-Up premiered in fourth place with a $13.5 million haul. The film cost $52 million to make, and averaged $4,635 per theater in its opening weekend.

Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger managed to stick around for another week in the box-office charts, popping in as the fifth highest-grossing film of the weekend. The lead-up to next year’s superhero team-up film The Avengers has grossed more than $246.2 million worldwide so far.
