Ricky Gervais may ‘host’ 2012 Golden Globes with uncensored, star-studded webcast [UPDATE]

In a post on his website, comedian Ricky Gervais just proposed what very well could turn out to be the best idea of all-time: Get together with a “few chums” — chums like Louis CK, Chris Rock, Karl Pilkington, John Stewart, and Larry David — to hold a 3-hour webcast that would run during the 2012 Golden Globes, and serve as “alternative commentary” to the awards show.

“People at home can have the telly on with the sound down listening to us online say things that no broadcaster could get away with,” writes Gervais.

“No one could do a f**king thing.”

Sound amazing? Of course it does! Unfortunately, it appears to be just an idea, at least for the moment. Gervais says that he may “do a non-broadcast practice with The Emmys to see if it works,” then let us know whether the plan will move forward.

Considering the response his idea’s received so far, it appears that such a webcast would be a massive hit. A screenshot of his blog post is, at the time of this writing, by far the most popular post on Reddit, with a headline that reads, “Ricky Gervais has an idea that would not only make the Golden Globes watchable, it would make it the best show of the year.” The post has been upvoted more than 23,000 times, more than any other post in the past month, at least.

Of course, this idea follows Gervais’ hilarious, albeit biting, stint as the actual host of the 2011 Golden Globes — a platform from which he managed to upset so many people that, when he disappeared for an hour of the ceremony, many Internet users thought he’d been fired on the spot. Needless to say, he wasn’t invited back.

The way we see it, if Gervais can get even two of the people above (especially if those two people are Jon Stewart and Louis CK), then he has a fail-proof plan. What do you think? Can Gervais pull it off? More importantly — would you tune in?

UPDATE 9/12/11: Chris Rock just tweeted that he’s “in” with Gervais’ plan. This just might happen, people! Stay tuned.

Disney Plus Free Trial: Can you stream for free in 2024?
Disney+ app on the iPad Air 5.

There is currently no Disney Plus free trial. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. In fact, there hasn't been a Disney Plus free trial for many years. But all is not lost. While you can't get Disney Plus for free, there are quite a few very cheap options. We list all of the tiers and options below: Everything from the $8 ad-supported tier to the $25 Disney Bundle Trio, which includes ad-free Disney Plus, ad-free Hulu and ESPN+. Occasionally Disney has a deal that gets you three months for $6 total, but that's not available right now. We'll keep you updated if it ever comes back.

The best and most reliable way to save is through the Disney Bundle, which sees ESPN Plus and Hulu thrown in for just $15 a month. On their own, Disney Plus is normally $8 per month, Hulu is $8, and ESPN is $10, so this is a great deal.  If it sounds good to you, you should start your subscription now. The price of the Disney Bundle increased to $15 on October 12, 2023.
