Game about ‘dark side’ of iPhone pulled from App Store

A game that focused on controversial aspects of the smartphone manufacturing process received approval from Apple and was placed in the App Store on Saturday. Three days later, however, it was pulled.

As reported by the New York Times, the 99-cent game, called Phone Story, tracked the life of a mobile phone, from the mining of precious metals required for making the device to factories in China where the phones are assembled.

The blurb on the game’s website says: “Phone Story is a game for smartphone devices that attempts to provoke a critical reflection on its own technological platform. Under the shiny surface of our electronic gadgets, behind its polished interface, hides the product of a troubling supply chain that stretches across the globe.”

It continues: “Phone Story represents this process with four educational games that make the player symbolically complicit in coltan extraction in Congo, outsourced labor in China, e-waste in Pakistan and gadget consumerism in the West.”

Its creator, Paolo Pedercini, a game designer and professor of art at Carnegie Mellon University, hoped that Phone Story would “generate some discussion about hardware and our socioeconomic impact as consumers of electronics.”

“But now it’s becoming more about market censorship,” he said.

According to screenshots posted by business blog BLN, part of the game appears to involve having to catch people jumping off a building. The website for Phone Story has a page highlighting the troubled past of the Foxconn factories in China which manufacture Apple’s iPhone. “Over the span of a few months, more than twenty workers committed suicide out of extreme desperation,” it says on the website.

According to the NYT report, Pedercini had been planning to donate any profits from the game to groups that are working to protect labor rights, as well as to organizations that “are working to stop the horrors represented in the game.”

Pedercini told the NYT that he wanted to use a bit of “dark humor” to get the game — and therefore the issues it raises — noticed. The ban may have inadvertently helped his cause.

Apple told Phone Story’s designer that any game that contained crude or objectionable content would be banned from the App Store. The fact is, someone at Apple must have approved the game for it to have made it into the store on the weekend. Perhaps the employee had a sense of humor similar to Pedercini’s and saw nothing wrong. Interestingly, the ban came shortly after Pedercini tweeted “the anti-iPhone game for iPhone” when promoting the game. Did Apple simply take offense to this message?

Pedercini responded to the ban by saying: “Although this game can be seen as disturbing on an intellectual level because it links back to a real-world analogy, the game itself wouldn’t scare a kid. There’s much worse stuff on the Internet and the App Store.”

Android users might be interested to know that Phone Story may soon be coming to a smartphone device near you.

In a major stride forward for mobile gaming, Apple announced during today's event that console games like Assassin's Creed Mirage, Resident Evil 4's remake, and Resident Evil Village are coming to the iPhone 15 Pro. These aren't watered-down mobile spinoffs or cloud-streamed games either; they're running natively with the help of the A17 Pro chip.

During the gaming segment of Tuesday's Apple event, the power of the iPhone 15 Pro's A17 Pro chip was highlighted. The 3-nanometer chip has 19 billion transistors, a six-core CPU, a 16-core Neural Engine that can handle 35 trillion operations per second, and a six-core GPU that supports things like mesh shading and hardware-accelerated ray tracing in video games. Several game developers were featured following its introduction to explain and show off just how powerful the A17 Pro Chip is. While this segment started with games already native to mobile, like The Division Resurgence, Honkai: Star Rail, and Genshin Impact, it didn't take long for some games made for systems like PS5 and Xbox Series X to appear.
Capcom's Tsuyoshi Kanda showed up and revealed that natively running versions of Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 are coming to the iPhone 15 Pro before the end of the year. Later, Apple confirmed that Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Mirage, which launches next month on PC and consoles, will also get a native iPhone 15 Pro port in early 2024, while Death Stranding is slated for a 2023 iPhone 15 Pro launch.
Historically, console-quality games like these have been impossible to get running on a mobile phone without the use of cloud gaming. Confirming that these three AAA games can all run natively on iPhone 15 Pro is certainly an impactful way for Apple to show just how powerful the A17 Pro chip is.

Netflix games may be coming to TVs soon, as revealed by new iOS app

It looks like Netflix might be expanding its gaming offerings to TVs soon, as a Netflix Game Controller is now on the iOS App Store. Netflix has yet to announce or comment on the purpose of the app, but a message shown when the app boots up confirms that it's coming.
Netflix has slowly made its way into the gaming industry over the past couple of years, acquiring studios and adding a dedicated game section to its mobile app that lets players download premium mobile games. The library includes some great games like Poinpy and Before Your Eyes, but has yet to break into the mainstream, likely due to its somewhat obscure availability. This new app, which was preemptively listed on Apple's storefront by Netflix and lines up with leaks from earlier this year, indicates that Netflix Games are coming to the TV.
The description for the app states that "this Game Controller app pairs with your TV and allows you to play games on Netflix using your phone or mobile device." After downloading and booting up the app, Digital Trends discovered two more messages asking players to "choose a game on your TV and follow the directions to connect" and that "Netflix Games on TV are in beta. Some devices may not be supported at this time."
All of this points to an impending beta rollout for games on Netflix's TV apps, which has not been announced yet. As such, we don't have any idea about which televisions or games the iOS app or Netflix Games on TV will support just yet. Regardless, this looks like a massive evolution for Netflix's gaming efforts, especially as it gears up to release a cloud gaming service.
Netflix declined to comment on the program when asked by Digital Trends, but it did refer us to previous statements it made about its intentions to break into cloud and TV game streaming.

Netflix is working on a feature that will bring its games to smart TVs and allow players to use their iPhone as a controller, reports from Bloomberg and MacRumors' Steve Moser said on Wednesday.

The move would take Netflix’s gaming service beyond only smartphones and tablets, giving subscribers more ways to play. And for iPhone owners, it also eliminates the need to buy a dedicated controller, making it more likely that people would give its games a go.
