3 sci-fi movies on Hulu you need to watch in October

Hulu subscribers have surely noticed that the site is going all in on Huluween horror programing. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t three sci-fi movies on Hulu that you should watch this month. And all three films were a part of everything new on Hulu at the beginning of October.

This month’s selections include a little-seen underwater sci-fi horror film, Tom Cruise’s post-apocalyptic adventure, and a reboot that may have saved one of the most storied franchises in all of science fiction. These are three sci-fi movies on Hulu that you need to watch in October.

Underwater (2020)

20th Century Studios

Unlike many sci-fi horror films, Underwater withholds its biggest revelations until very late in the film. The story takes place just over two decades from now, as a drilling and research facility called Kepler 822 runs into some serious problems at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Engineer Norah Price (Kristen Stewart) and Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel) are among the survivors of the apparent accident, including Emily Haversham (Glass Onion‘s Jessica Henwick), Liam Smith (John Gallagher Jr.), Rodrigo Nagenda (Mamoudou Athie), and Paul Abel (T.J. Miller).

But the incident at Kepler 822 is no natural disaster. Norah and her colleagues soon discover that they are being menaced by previously undiscovered creatures. And it seems like the research at Kepler 822 has awakened a larger threat that may represent the doom of mankind itself.

Oblivion (2013)

A man and a woman fly in a space ship in Oblivion.
Universal Pictures

At first glance, the premise of the underrated blockbuster Oblivion doesn’t sound all that different from Pixar’s Wall-E. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) and Victoria “Vika” Olsen (Andrea Riseborough) are seemingly the last people on Earth. Their only purpose in life is to repair damaged drones. At the same time, Jack’s dreams are haunted by visions or memories of a woman he has never met.

That woman turns out to be Julia Rusakova (Olga Kurylenko), and her arrival completely upends everything that Jack thought he knew about his life before the alien invasion of the Earth. Once he is armed with the truth, Jack tries to break away from his repetitive cycle to free his world before it’s too late.

Star Trek (2009)

The Enterprise crew looks at the camera in the 2009 film Star Trek.
Paramount

Star Trek fans sometimes seem like they are in denial about the state of the franchise before J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot movie opened in theaters. There were no Star Trek TV shows at the time, and the most recent series at the time, Star Trek: Enterprise, was canceled years earlier after only four seasons. The franchise badly needed new blood, and that’s what it got in this reboot.

While creating a new timeline for the crew of the Enterprise, Abrams successfully linked it to the future of the previous timeline. Captain Nero (Eric Bana) came back in time with the original Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Nero attempted to destroy the Federation out of a misguided desire for revenge. The new Enterprise crew, including James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto),  Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy (Karl Urban), and the rest, have to find a way to work together to stop Nero, or else they won’t live long enough to get a five-year mission to explore the galaxy.
