Elgato Systems, a developer of products for recording and sharing TV, earlier this month announced the pending release of the EyeTV 250, a TV receiver/recorder for analog television. The EyeTV 250 is priced at $199 and will be available at the end of this month.
The EyeTV 250, said Elgato, is about the same size as an iPod. It contains a hardware encoder which converts analog TV signals into MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats. It also comes with an adapter cable which accepts composite and S-video connections from sources like VCRs and cable or satellite boxes. The EyeTV 250, which works only with Macs, can also be used to turn a computer into a monitor for a gaming console via a switchable “game modeâ€. This latter feature disables the hardware encoder, routing the uncompressed video signal directly to the Mac’s screen.
Included with the EyeTV 250 is software which allows users to watch, record, pause and replay television programming. This software include support for exporting recorded video to a variety of formats, including fifth generation iPods and Sony’s PlayStation Portable.
