3 And T-Mobile Together On UK 3G Networks

3G is widely touted as the future of mobile networks. But government watchdog Ofcom has only demanded that 3G networks reach 80% of the UK population. In a move that will help both the companies involved and consumers, T-Mobile and 3 are combining efforts so that 98% of the population will be covered by 3G by 2009. Given that some analysts estimate that 3G usage is expected to rise by 240% in the next four years, wider coverage could give the networks a big advantage.

More to the point, by redeploying their networks, it will take only one set of masts and infrastructure, according to a report on ZDNet. They’ll be able to take down around 5,000 masts and move others to widen the coverage, splitting operating and capital costs.

Jim Hyde, chief executive of T-Mobile UK, told ZDNet,

“And the cost savings this ought to deliver both companies certainly provides a model that suggests even more competition in terms of what we’ll be able to deliver to the end users in terms of relevancy of products and services and price.”

However, the news has also fueled speculation of a merger between the two companies. Certainly 3 hasn’t been a profitable venture for its owners, Hong Kong’s Hutchison Whampoa, which decided to forego a market listing last year. Both companies deny ant merger is in the works.

T-Mobile just set another 5G speed record
Cell phone tower shooting off pink beams with a 5G logo next to it.

T-Mobile’s rivals may be nipping at its heels in the 5G race, but the Uncarrier is determined to stay ahead of the game. It not only boasts the fastest and most expansive 5G network in the U.S., but it’s actively working on technologies that will help it reach even greater peak speeds.

Two years ago, T-Mobile used a relatively new technique known as 5G Carrier Aggregation (5G CA) to achieve the kind of 3Gbps download speeds on midband frequencies that had previously been the exclusive domain of extremely high (and extremely short-range) mmWave technologies. Now, it’s chalked up another 5G first by taking advantage of the latest developments to shatter the traditional cap on upload speeds over sub-6GHz frequencies.

Ordering a Galaxy S24? Don’t forget you need a power adapter
Several devices plugged into the Belkin BoostCharge 3-port USB-C wall charger on a bedside table.

Samsung recently started taking pre-orders for its brand new Galaxy S24 phone, and there are some things we already like about it. However, the Galaxy S24 doesn’t come with a charger, so you’ll need to get yourself a power adapter if you’ve put in an order. There are several options out there for new Galaxy S24 owners, and our top pick is the Belkin BoostCharge 3-Port USB-C Wall Charger. You can read onward for more on why we like it. Another consideration is the OEM charger that you can purchase directly from Samsung, and you can read onward for more information on it as well.
Belkin BoostCharge 3-Port USB-C Wall Charger — $45

The Belkin BoostCharge 3-Port USB-C Wall Charger is our top pick for Samsung Galaxy S24 owners in search of a way to charge the device. While the Galaxy S24 is likely to land among the best phones at some point, it falls short when it comes to providing this particular accessory. You’re going to have to spend a few bucks to get a charger when you purchase the Galaxy S24, and the Belkin costs slightly less than Samsung’s native charger. It offers quite a bit more, however, as it has three USB-C ports that allow you to charge multiple devices at a time. The Belkin BoostCharge 3-Port USB-C Wall Charger provides 67-watts of power for use with USB-C smartphones, tablets, and even laptops, making it super versatile and something to go along with the other accessories you need for your Samsung Galaxy S24.
