Most sources agree that Apple will reveal at least one of the iPhone 6 models this September during a launch event. Recently, several reports have hinted that the larger 5.5-inch version of the iPhone 6 may be delayed or simply launched at a second event sometime later in the fall. Now, a new post from a Chinese leaker on Weibo indicates that Apple may hold off on releasing the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 until December when it unveils the iWatch.

The source claims that his information springs from supply chain sources who are familiar with Apple’s plans. Apparently, the larger iPhone 6 has yet to go into mass production, even though the smaller 4.7-inch model is already zipping down the assembly line. The 5.5-inch model will supposedly head into mass production in September. The leaker, whose report was unearthed by GforGames, says that those sources also believe Apple will unveil the iWatch in December alongside the larger iPhone 6.

When the iPhone 5S launched, Apple only had so many gold versions available and the Internet went insane — the same could happen with the iWatch.

Given the fact that the pre-holiday rush in November is one of Apple’s most profitable times, many tech publications, including 9to5Mac tend to view this latest rumor with a great deal of skepticism. It is much more likely that Apple will unveil one or both products in November, even if the devices are only available in limited numbers. That way, Apple would move a few units before the year’s end and probably generate tons of hype in the process.

When the iPhone 5S launched, Apple only had so many gold versions available and the Internet went insane, with some people actually listing their gold iPhone 5S handsets on eBay for thousands of dollars. The same thing could happen with the iPhone 6 or the iWatch, if supplies are limited.

At this point, it’s impossible to say for sure when the two iPhone 6 models or the iWatch will launch. The current consensus is that Apple will launch the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 in mid-September. If the 5.5-inch model doesn’t grace the stage at that event, it could arrive in October or November at the latest. Assuming the iWatch launches this year, it will most likely arrive in November to meet the holiday rush.

In the meantime, check out our iPhone 6 and iWatch rumor roundups.
