Netflix turns nostalgia to 11 for Fuller House teaser, announces February release

Netflix has finally confirmed a release date for its upcoming Full House reboot, Fuller House, slating the new show for arrival on February 26, 2016. To whet your appetites until then, there’s a new, one-minute teaser video that’s chocked full of nostalgia.

That signature opening sequence. The kitchen that led up to a magical attic where Uncle Jesse ended up living with his family. The living room and front door where many a life-lesson conversation was had to the cheesy background music. For any fan of the original ‘80s and ‘90s sitcom, the teaser will, as the kids say today, give you all the feels. Clearly Netflix is pulling on the heart strings here, though the original show certainly never dug very deep into the emotional gully.

The teaser replaces the signature “Everywhere You Look” theme song from the original, adding the calming (and lyrically appropriate) sounds of Miranda Lambert’s The House That Built Me in the background as you see the shot-by-shot retrace of the opening theme, including the exterior shot of the multi-level home (that, by the way, clearly does not have an attic) with its signature red door. The set has been recreated to a tee to the original; with some updated furniture, of course.

The plot of the new show involves eldest Tanner daughter DJ (played by Candice Cameron-Bure, who will be reprising the role), who is now widowed and living in her childhood home with her three children. Following the death of her husband, her best friend Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) and younger sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) come to live with her to help out. Viewers of the original show will know that DJ is living the same fate as her father: in Full House, Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) was joined by his brother-in-law Jesse (John Stamos) and best friend Joey (Dave Coulier) to help with his three daughters when his wife passed on.

All cast members have agreed to reprise their roles, at least for the pilot episode and guest appearances, with the exception of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who jointly played the youngest Tanner daughter Michelle. Apparently the character (like the actors themselves) is too busy building her fashion empire in New York City, according to the meta-storyline.

The teaser ends with a dog barking away at the front door as we overhear the family approaching, clearly about to move back in. Uncle Jesse is worried about his signature hair, DJ suggests they “should have gotten movers,” and Danny’s instantly recognizable voice utters “welcome home” as he proceeds to unlock the door.

We don’t see the original cast, but we hear them opening the door — and just to make sure you know who’s all there, Uncle Joey pulls out his “cut-it-out” line. Has he been doing that shtick for 25 years? We’ll find out soon enough.

Fuller House will return with 13 episodes in its first season, all of which will be available to stream starting February 26.
