Sony puts March’s PlayStation Plus freebie up for vote

Sony is relaunching its PlayStation Plus-exclusive “Vote to Play” campaign, giving service subscribers the chance to vote for which game will be given away for free next month.

March’s candidates include the PlayStation 4 versions of Action Henk!, Assault Android Cactus, and Broforce.

Starting on February 9th, PlayStation Network members with an active PlayStation Plus subscription can vote for their preferred freebie. The game with the most votes by the end of the month will be given away for free to service subscribers throughout March.

Among the candidates is Broforce, a side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter from Devolver Digital and developer Free Lives. Originally released via Steam’s Early Access program, Broforce has seen significant expansion in the months following its launch, and now includes dozens of playable characters inspired by ’80s action movies.

The PlayStation 4 version of Broforce features a co-op campaign for up to four players either locally or online via the PlayStation Network, along with an “Explosion Run” time attack mode for veteran players.

Also up for vote is Assault Android Cactus, a twin-stick shooter with a unique draining battery feature in place of the genre’s standard respawn mechanics. Players compete for score across 25 arenas filled with deadly enemies either alone or with friends in a four-player local co-op mode.

March’s final candidate is Action Henk!, which its creators describe as “a lightning fast platform-racing game set in a beautifully crafted 3D toy box world.” Action Henk! tests player reflexes throughout more than 70 included levels.

“The thread that brings these three games together: fun titles that can connect the Plus community to play together with friends,” Sony notes. “We hope that you’ll enjoy learning about each game and the developers behind them before casting your vote.”

PlayStation Plus members can vote for next month’s featured game by accessing the “Vote to Play” option on the PlayStation Store on February 9th. The winning game will be available for download on March 1st.

To celebrate the first anniversary of the PlayStation VR2, Sony revealed a new batch of games coming to its virtual reality headset and confirmed that it's testing a feature that would let people play PC VR games on their PSVR2.

"We’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PSVR2 titles available through PS5," the PlayStation Blog post about PSVR2's first anniversary teases. "We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates."

Of the three games available for no additional cost with a PlayStation Plus Essential subscription this February, the best game isn’t the highest-profile one. A lot of attention is going to Foamstars, the odd multiplayer game Square Enix launched free on PS Plus, but the real gem of February 2024’s PS Plus Essential lineup is Rollerdrome from Roll7 and Private Division.

First released for PS5 and PC in August 2022, I previously described this game as Max Payne meets Skate. Essentially, Rollerdrome is a sports combat game where players must roller-skate around and do tricks in order to accrue ammo used to shoot enemies with guns. It’s a simple gameplay loop and premise that Rollerdrome gets the most out of, and it's a must-play for those looking for some simple yet satisfying action.
Blood sport
In Rollerdrome, players control a character named Kara Hassan as she ascends the ranks in the titular sport, which sees “players” combat each other with deadly weapons. While many of the enemies Kara takes on are mostly static, she can skate around on a pair of rollerblades. Rollerdrome features a full-on combo system like a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater or Skate titles, although it’s not as punishing if you mess up an input or chain together a combo properly.

While we can argue all day about which console is best, there's one PlayStation 5 feature that no other system can claim: customization. On the original PS5, players could easily snap off the system's faceplates and replace them with new ones. Sony would naturally keep that feature for its slimmer PS5 model, creating an entirely new line of console covers, starting with its Deep Earth Collection.

I didn't think much of that initially, considering that it was an expected feature. That is, until I turned my PS5 into my own custom, "special edition" Mario-themed console.
