How to install SteamVR and set it up

Installing SteamVR is one of the first steps into the world of virtual reality, regardless of which SteamVR compatible headset you have. It's what allows your virtual reality headset to link up with your Steam account, giving you access to a huge library of virtual reality games and experiences that you can then access through Steam on your desktop or through the headset itself.

Standalone VR headsets, like the Oculus Quest and Quest 2 don't necessarily need SteamVR to work, but they can enjoy Steam games when connected to your PC. Other headsets, like the HTC Vive, Vive Pro, Valve Index, and others, all need SteamVR installed to get up and running.

Step 2: Connect your virtual reality headset to your PC. Your PC will install a number of drivers; wait for the installs to finish. You should then be prompted to install SteamVR with a popup box. Press the Install SteamVR button to begin.

Alternatively, if that doesn't happen, you can search for "SteamVR" on the Steam Store. Select the green Play Game button and follow through with the on-screen instructions to begin installing SteamVR.

In either case, the download is around 2GB, so it can take a while on slower connections. After it's finished, Steam will install SteamVR automatically, so just leave your PC running and wait for the install to finish. The Apple Vision Pro has given VR its iPhone moment
A person is watching a movie using the Apple Vision Pro.

"One more thing" means you're about to be treated to something groundbreaking -- and that's exactly what happened when Apple CEO Tim Cook uttered those fateful three words at the end of the recent Worldwide Developers Conference 2023 keynote. The Apple Vision Pro is not just another VR headset; no, it's an incredible piece of technology that pushes the boundaries of what we can expect from both virtual reality and augmented reality. The display tech, sensor quality, and polish are like nothing we've ever seen before in a headset — and they signal a big jump forward in VR and AR tech.

The only quibble is the price: $3,500. That's a whole lot of cash, and due to that, I'm not confident the Vision Pro will appear in every other house in the next few years.

Apple Vision Pro vs. Meta Quest Pro: How will Apple stack up?
Apple Vision Pro has a digital crown just like the Apple Watch.

Apple's new Vision Pro is more than triple the price of Meta's premium VR headset, the Quest Pro. Is the Vision Pro really worth the extra expense, or will you be just as happy with a Quest Pro and thousands of dollars left in your pocket? You might be surprised at the answer.

Quality is a great way to justify a high price. Meta and Apple each boast advanced designs, better displays, fast performance, and greater comfort than mainstream headsets. When comparing which is the best VR headset, you should consider all of these details. Which aspects are most important depends on how you anticipate using the device.

Apple’s forthcoming Reality Pro headset hasn’t even launched, yet it’s already been plagued by negative stories and general skepticism about its prospects. These will include games, workouts, collaboration tools, and much more, with a mixture of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) options.
