Dashbot is the hands-free, eyes-free AI assistant your car is dreaming of

We’re 30 years removed from the final episodes of the original Knight Rider, the hit series in which David Hasselhoff was aided in his crime fighting by automotive artificial intelligence assistant, KITT. But that doesn’t mean that we’re not still clinging on for the perfect in-car AI system — and thanks to new Kickstarter Dashbot, we may not be waiting too much longer.

Heck, it even has the quasi-retro interface working in its favor!

Dashbot is a smart AI assistant, designed to be 100 percent voice-controlled so drivers keep their hands on the wheel and, just as importantly, their eyes on the road. Connecting to your smartphone via Bluetooth, it promises to be the on-the-road smart assistant we have been hankering after.

“A lot of the interactions we have with our phones are designed for us to look at the screen,” creator Daven Rauchwerk told Digital Trends. “It doesn’t matter if it’s in driving mode or whatever else, if you ask it a question the response is very often visual. That encourages us to look at the display, which necessarily means not looking at the road. We wanted to create a solution that wasn’t just hands-free, but completely screen-free.”

This idea of removing the screen from in-car infotainment systems is something few other companies have embraced. “Their answer to a distracting screen in your car is often a much bigger screen,” Rauchwerk continued. “That seems strange to me. It felt like there had to be a better way.”

Dashbot may well be that better way. Its open-source system lets you do everything from sending text messages and finding songs on streaming music services to getting turn-by-turn directions and even answering trivia questions, courtesy of Amazon Alexa integration. Best of all? Because it’s screen-free, this can be done without switching apps or navigating popup controls. All you have to do is say, “Dashbot” and its onboard AI will spring to life.

Rauchwerk told us that the whole system had been built with cars in mind, with technology like a far-field beamforming microphone array and state-of-the-art digital signal processing meaning that Dashbot will hear what you’re saying regardless of how loud your music is.

Despite this, it’s pleasingly retro-fittable, with the option of even connecting to an old-school cassette adapter and FM transmitter if you’re still driving a car which could’ve appeared in the aforementioned 1980s Knight Rider TV series.

Anker just exposed a big problem with portable power stations

When you're shopping for a portable power station, there's one number that's almost impossible to ignore: battery capacity. A 2 kWh battery should give you roughly 2 kWh of usable power, right? Unfortunately, things aren't quite that simple. Anker SOLIX has published new efficiency data for its S Series portable power stations, and it's putting the spotlight on something that doesn't get nearly as much attention as capacity: how much of the energy stored inside the battery actually makes it to your devices.

According to Anker, portable power stations are commonly advertised with efficiency figures measured under relatively heavy loads, where they can reach roughly 89% to 92% efficiency. But that's not necessarily how most people use one during an outage. Think about what you'd actually plug in. A Wi-Fi router might sip power continuously, a refrigerator switches its compressor on and off throughout the day, and a CPAP machine could run overnight. Together, those devices may draw just a fraction of what a large power station is capable of supplying. And that's where efficiency can start slipping.

For months, reports have suggested that OpenAI’s first hardware product would be a screen-free smart speaker designed to act more like an AI companion. We already knew it could understand its surroundings, be carried around the home, and proactively help users. A new Bloomberg report now gives us a clearer picture of what the device may actually look like.

As per the report, OpenAI’s first gadget will be shaped like a doughnut and measure about the same size as a hockey puck. You will be able to carry it between rooms or leave it nearby on whatever surface is convenient. The device is expected to be on the expensive side, as the company has pondered pricing it around $300 to $400. A release is currently planned for 2027.

Google Antigravity just built an AI translator that works without the internet

Google has shown off a new AI project that could make language barriers a little less intimidating, and it doesn't need an internet connection to do it. The company has introduced the Gemma Translator, a compact prototype built in collaboration with Antigravity. Unlike most AI translation tools that rely on cloud processing, this device runs entirely offline using Gemma 4 E2B, Google's lightweight open model. Everything happens locally on the device, making it both portable and independent of an internet connection. The prototype is powered by a Raspberry Pi 5 and includes a microphone and speaker inside a custom 3D-printed enclosure, creating a self-contained translator you can carry almost anywhere.
