All Halo games in order, by release date and chronologically

Halo is easily one of the most important console games ever made. Not only did it help kickstart Microsoft’s debut into the console space by launching with one of the best original Xbox games, but it also proved that shooters could work on a controller. Prior to Master Chief, it was widely assumed that the best FPS games were only on PC.

Since we first learned about Halo, Spartans, and the Covenant in 2001, the wider universe of Halo has been expanded in every direction. We could spend hours talking about all the comics, novels, and TV shows, but most gamers just want to focus on the games. Being a more grounded series — as far as sci-fi shooters are concerned, anyway — the Halo timeline is much more concrete than something like the Zelda games. Whether you want to experience the series in the same order they were released in or follow the in-universe timeline, here are all the Halo games in order.

Despite how big Halo is, even rivaling the best Call of Duty games of the time, there are only 12 games in the series that fit into the timeline (not counting remakes or remasters).

This is the order the games originally came out in (again, not including remakes or remasters) for those who want to play the games from oldest to newest.

  • Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
  • Halo 2 (2004)
  • Halo 3 (2007)
  • Halo Wars (2009)
  • Halo 3: ODST (2010)
  • Halo: Reach (2010)
  • Halo 4 (2012)
  • Halo: Spartan Assault (2013)
  • Halo: Spartan Strike (2015)
  • Halo 5: Guardians (2015)
  • Halo Wars 2 (2017)
  • Halo Infinite (2021)

The chronology in Halo is very important. This series spans multiple decades from the earliest point in the timeline to the last, with plenty of alliances, betrayals, and new factions entering and exiting the mix. While Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike don’t add much to the overall narrative, they do include some important people and places that die-hard fans will want to know about.

On the other hand, the Halo Wars series has ended up becoming essential for understanding the core plot in later titles.

Sadly, a lot of important plot details, such as the fate of some major characters, are relegated to media outside of the games. Still, playing the series in chronological order will let you keep up with the main plot.

  • Halo Wars (2531)
  • Halo: Reach (2552)
  • Halo: Combat Evolved (2552)
  • Halo 2 (2552)
  • Halo 3: ODST (2552 – takes place within Halo 2)
  • Halo 3 (2552-2553)
  • Halo: Spartan Assault (2554)
  • Halo 4 (2557)
  • Halo: Spartan Strike (2557)
  • Halo 5: Guardians (2558)
  • Halo Wars 2 (2559)
  • Halo Infinite (2560)

All Borderlands games in order, by release date and chronologically
Borderlands 4

When it comes to FPS games, it is always a toss-up as to whether or not the story even matters. On one hand, you can play the Call of Duty games in order but only a few games actually link up with one another. Meanwhile, playing the Halo games in order is almost required to understand what's going on. The Borderlands franchise lands somewhere in the middle, though most people probably assume the story doesn't play a big factor since it is more focused on being comedic than telling a deep story. However, there is a ton of lore to this universe and each game, including the spinoffs, all connect leading up to Borderlands 4. Don't let the number 4 fool you, though, because there are more than twice as many games in the franchise. We've been playing the franchise since it began so we will show you exactly how to play the entire Borderlands franchise in order, both in release order and chronologically.

Star Wars Outlaw’s second DLC trailer leaked its release date a day early
Kay Vess stands next to arcade cabinets in Star Wars Outlaws.

The trailer for Star War's Outlaws' DLC A Pirate's Fortune seems to have been published early by accident and revealed a release date: May 15, 2025. Ubisoft has already taken down the leaked trailer, but not before fans snapped plenty of screenshots. Better yet, a demo for Star Wars Outlaws is also available starting today on the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Unfortunately, your save will not carry over to the game, if you choose to purchase it after trying it out.

The demo features roughly three hours of non-consecutive gameplay, letting players experience different aspects of the game. It's not just a few hours at the start, so it makes sense that the saved data won't transfer.

Marathon, Bungie’s long-awaited extraction shooter, will release this fall
Two runners in marathon advancing.

Marathon is Bungie's highly-anticipated extraction shooter, and the company just dropped a new gameplay overview trailer and a release date: September 23, 2025. You take the role of a Runner, a cybernetic humanoid whose goal is to explore the ruins of the planet of Tau Ceti IV and uncover its secrets — and walk away with as much loot as you can carry.

The reveal was unlocked through an alternate reality game, where thousands of community members all cooperated to find the date. For long-time Bungie fans, that shouldn't come as a surprise; Halo 2 was announced in a similar way through the iconic I Love Bees campaign. Bungie also announced a closed alpha test that will start on April 23, 2025. If you're interested in taking part, join the community Discord for a chance to sign up.
