Hyrule Field will run red with Moblin blood in Hyrule Warriors

The Wii U has an exciting exclusive coming in Nintendo and Tecmo Koei’s Hyrule Warriors, a spin-off of Tecmo Koei’s venerable, slaughter-simulating Dynasty Warriors series set in the world of The Legend of Zelda.

The long-running Tecmo Koei series, which has visited China (Dynasty Warriors), Japan (Samurai Warriors), and sci-fi anime (Dynasty Warriors: Gundam), casts you as a lone warrior sent into a button-mashing bloodbath against hordes of enemies–it’s a soothing, mindless kind of pleasure for when you want quantity over quality in your foes.

Hyrule Warriors, first revealed last December, takes that action to the Zelda universe, letting you play as Link or Zelda’s bodyguard Impa (and others still to be confirmed) as they fight to rescue the incessantly-kidnapped princess from the evil sorceress Cia and her massive army. Link, Impa, and the other to-be-revealed characters each have their own sets of weapons and over-the-top special moves. The first trailer (below) indicated that Hyrule Warriors is only a working title, but Nintendo’s latest press release seems to confirm it as official.

Check out the gallery for a taste of the mayhem to come. The game is set for an August release in Japan, though the product page on Nintendo’s U.S. website also lists the game for a 2014 release.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins makes bold changes, and they’re already paying off
A warriors slashes enemies in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

There was one string of moments that left me in awe while playing a demo of Dynasty Warriors: Origins at the Tokyo Game Show. This particular sequence began with enemy forces unleashing a barrage of arrows. My allies weathered the storm, but they were met by an enemy charge that I deftly countered with a tactical maneuver. Then, I was challenged to a duel by a rival general, Hua Xiong, causing numerous soldiers to surround us to form a fighting pit. As these events transpired, numerous notifications popped up telling me how many soldiers I had defeated, as allied officers cheered me onward to victory.

Moments like this are what make developer Omega Force’s upcoming action RPG so exciting. I was surprised by how fluidly these sequences were presented, as though I was adapting to the flow of battle in real time. I audibly gasped and hollered on several occasions, prompting event staff to approach me thinking that something had gone wrong. It’s not just that its story surprised me as a longtime fan of Romance of the Three Kingdoms; Dynasty Warriors: Origins is actually making several changes to the musou formula that may shock series’ fans initially. You can let your guard down for now; Omega Force has a sound plan to boldly reinvent the series, and I can already see it paying off.
The origins of a hero
The campaign of Dynasty Warriors: Origins stars the Wanderer, a mysterious hero who rises through the ranks as tumultuous events lead to a pivotal moment in Chinese history. This change alone should be enough to shock veterans of Koei Tecmo’s long-running hack-and-slash series. After all, it eschews the traditional approach where players select officers that belong to certain factions or kingdoms, often concluding their arcs in an ahistorical manner.

With Tears of the Kingdom, Zelda gets the spotlight she’s always deserved
Zelda with the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom.

For 37 years, the Legend of Zelda series has held its place as gaming’s most important franchises. It carries the same gravitas as classic literature, with several entries in the series feeling like canonical classics that should be in the syllabus of any video game course. It’s a collection of foundational tales that helped build what an adventure game plays like, but also what a fundamental hero’s journey story looks like in the medium. And of course, standing tall at the center of Zelda’s timeless nature is … Link.

Yes, despite Zelda’s name being the core of the franchise’s branding, the Hylian princess long played second fiddle to the series’ voiceless protagonist. In early games, she was a distressed damsel to be saved. She’d get to show off a bit of her power in later ones, but Link -- the hero of time -- tended to get most of the attention.
