Infogrames to Complete Takeover of Atari

France’s Infogrames Entertainment has announced it plans to acquire the remainder of venerable video game developer Atari for just $11 million. Infogrames already owns just over 51 percent of Atari’s stock, and has been publishing games under the Atari name since 2001. The takeover will yield $1.68 per share to Atari shareholders, assuming they approve the deal.

"Bringing Atari US and Infogrames businesses together will enable us to create a simplified global structure for our business as we seek to re-build a well-managed, cohesive and financially disciplined company," said Infogrames CEO David Gardner in a statement.

Although Atari was a dominant player in the arcade and home video game markets in the 1970s and early ’80s, competition from Nintendo and later Sega knocked the company back on its heels, and it never truly recovered. The company currently produces games like Alone in the Dark and has a major franchise deal with games related to the animated series Dragonball Z, and develops to a variety of platforms, including the Nintendo GameBoy Advance and SD, Sony PSP, the Xbox 360, as well as Sony’s PS2 and PS3. However, almost a year ago Atari announced a million-dollar plan to restructure the company, which included laying off about 20 percent of its employees.

The video game hardware scene is so busy these days that it's hard to keep track of. During November, for instance, we saw the launch of the Legion Go, Steam Deck OLED, PlayStation Portal, Atari 2600+, and a new PlayStation 5 model. It's a whole lot to keep track of, as hardware makers find themselves in a race to innovate. A lot of those fast and furious changes are coming from the portable market, as Steam Deck competitors and cloud devices pile up.

That gave us a lot to choose from when picking the most innovative gaming tech of 2023. While the Steam Deck was the only clear choice last year, there were no shortage of directions we could have gone in this time. From groundbreaking controllers to creative handhelds, these were the pieces of hardware that moved the gaming industry forward in 2023.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is the complete package you’ve been waiting for

CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, a complete version of the action-RPG for PC, will launch in December. It comes with all previously released updates and DLC, including September's Phantom Liberty.

Cyberpunk 2077 first released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in December 2020 and was met with harsh criticism over poor performance and a load of bugs despite CD Projekt Red's ambitious promises. The Polish developer turned the disastrous launch into a redemption story, though, earning back some goodwill this year with the 2.0 update that overhauled many of the weaker gameplay systems and the well-received Phantom Liberty expansion. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition includes all of those additions, so it seems like it will cap off this comeback tale when it launches for PC on December 5.
