Microsoft to unveil the Next Xbox on May 21

Microsoft has begun the slow burn to the official reveal of the Next Xbox, Durango, Xbox 720, or whatever the next generation of Xbox is called.

The official notice came earlier today, heralding the event:

During this time, we’ll share our vision for Xbox and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19 days later at E3, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster gaming experiences.

The teams here at Xbox have been very busy and are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we’ve been working on.

The event will take place on the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, Washington, beginning at 10am PST, and will be live streamed online, on Xbox Live, and air on Spike TV. Check back with us for a LOT more coverage.

Age of Mythology: Retold will launch on PC and Xbox at the same time

Microsoft and World's Edge gave us our first glimpse of its upcoming remaster of real-time strategy game Age of Mythology: Retold during Friday's New Year, New Age livestream. They also confirmed that it will launch on PC and Xbox later this year.

Age of Mythology: Retold's segment of the livestream began with Art Director Melinda Rose introducing the gameand teasing that it will contain all-new 3D character models, animation, textures, and UI. Rose also highlighted the details of the character models for units like Medusa, Pegasus, and Cerberus. Each time players upgrade a unit, their design will change slightly. We then got a look at its key art, as well as confirmation that Age of Mythology: Retold will be released later this year. It will launch on both PC and Xbox at the same time and is the first World's Edge game to do so.

The wave of layoffs that has happened over the past year in the video game industry is well-documented. Some of the biggest culprits are Embracer Group, which has laid off nearly 1,400 workers across several of its studios since the start of a restructuring program last July, and Microsoft, which laid off 1,900 developers across Xbox, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard in January. After relative silence around these layoffs, leadership at both companies finally tried to offer more transparently into what happened.

Neither of their statements are good enough.

Xbox says its next console will be gaming’s ‘largest technical leap’ ever

During today's Xbox Business Update, Sarah Bond, president of Xbox at Microsoft, reaffirmed the gaming company's commitment to hardware. She confirmed that Xbox is already looking ahead to its next console, which she teases will be a major technical leap.

The news came at the end of a 22-minute podcast where Xbox shared its vision for the future. The panel, featuring CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer, Bond, and Matt Booty, president of game content and studios, addressed rumors that Xbox would be bringing its games to other platforms and ditching hardware. While there was some truth to the first point, as four unnamed Xbox exclusives are headed to other consoles, the hardware rumors weren't correct.
