Amazon Prime Video’s AI dubbing could placate cinephiles while angering voice actors

Amazon Prime Video plans to use AI to dub foreign language shows and movies into English and Latin American Spanish. The company has begun a pilot program that uses “AI-aided” dubbing on 12 licensed movies and series, including titles such as El Cid: La Leyenda, Mi Mamá Lora, and Long Lost.

Amazon says the pilot uses a hybrid approach to dubbing “in which localization professionals collaborate with AI to ensure quality control,” and made it clear that it will only use its AI-aided process on content that doesn’t already have dubbing support.

I reached out to Amazon to find out if the creators of the 12 pilot movies and series were involved in the process, but I hadn’t received a response by the time this article was published.

Many cinephiles believe that watching a dubbed version of a foreign language film or series undermines the art. Since an actor’s performance is a combination of movement, speech, and emphasis, it’s important to experience all of it, even if you need subtitles to understand what is said. If AI dubbing could preserve 100% of that performance, while converting it to a different language, it could redefine what it means to watch a dubbed movie.

Amazon’s version of AI dubbing will likely cause less viewer consternation than Netflix’s approach, which used AI to modify the mouth movements of on-screen actors to better match the dubbed dialogue.

On the other hand, AI dubbing threatens the livelihood of professional voice actors. In 2023, voice actors sounded the alarm via the National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA). It issued advice for voice actors, telling them never to grant synthesis rights to a client and to contact their union or an attorney if they suspect the contract is trying to take their rights.

Among their concerns were that studios might use AI to edit lines of dialogue, in effect getting new performances from actors without bringing them back into the recording studio (or paying them to do so).

Amazon isn’t the first company to employ AI-based dubbing. In 2023, Spotify debuted a tool based on OpenAI’s technology that let it clone the voices of its podcast hosts and dub them into other languages.

That technology has continued to improve at a dramatic rate. In 2024, OpenAI boasted that it only needed 15 seconds of sample audio to create an AI clone of someone’s voice. Just a few months later, Microsoft — which has invested heavily in OpenAI — revealed that its own state-of-the-art AI voice model VALL-E 2 was too dangerous to release, based on its realism, which sparked fears of misuse.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in March 2025
The cast of The Wheel of Time season 3.

Amazon Prime Video has a very annoying habit of being late with its list of library titles of classic TV shows and movies joining the library each month. For March, Prime Video has decided not to disclose its new library additions at all. We can only assume that new movies arrived on Prime Video at the start of March, but Amazon has left us all in the dark. The other major streamers share detailed breakdowns of their new films and TV series.

But as of March 4, Amazon has only shared the bare minimum of what's coming to Prime Video in March. To be fair, it's a good lineup. The fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, is premiering its third season on March 13, while the long-running Bosch franchise comes to a close with season 3 of Bosch: Legacy on March 27. To put it in perspective, Bosch was one of the first Prime Video original series in 2014! Ten seasons across two shows is a great run by any measure.

3 underrated movies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in March 2025
Several workers with bags standing in a remote location looking scared in Severance.

What makes a movie underrated? It might be that critics have panned the film even though it has earned massive box office success and positive reception from audiences. Perhaps it’s the other way around, and critics love it, but audiences fail to see what’s so special. Some underrated movies are fantastic but simply didn’t get the attention they deserved and have slipped into the deep depths of streaming services, only to be unearthed by those who dare to find them.
The three underrated movies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in March 2025 fall into varying categories that qualify the movies as underrated. One broke records, yet critics refuse to give it two thumbs up. Another shares its name with one of the hottest shows streaming right now.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Official Trailer

Even before it premiered, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was getting a lot of flak for the choice of Chris Pratt as the voice of the titular character. Following the debut of this adventure comedy film in theaters, critics still weren’t convinced that it was a hit. But The Super Mario Bros. Movie delighted fans and proved naysayers wrong.
The film explored an interesting dynamic whereby Bowser (Jack Black) was a softie with a deep love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). Of course, this brought us that lovely gem of a Peaches song that kids sang for weeks after. The movie's mixed reviews are no match for its tremendous box office success, not to mention the fact that it broke a Guinness World Record to become the highest-grossing movie based on a video game and became the first movie based on a video game to gross more than $1 billion. It’s incredible to learn that with all these huge numbers, The Super Mario Bros. Movie only has a 59% Rotten Tomatoes critics score.

High School (2022)
High School | Season 1 Trailer | Coming October 14
High School isn’t underrated because it hasn’t been well-received. In fact, the single-season comedy has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and an equally impressive 94% audience score. But it’s one of those shows you probably never even heard of. Based on the memoir of the same name by Clea DuVall and Tegan and Sara Quin (yes, of the pop duo Tegan And Sara), it’s a lovely throwback to the grunge and rave-loving music and style culture of the ‘90s.
As the ladies (Railey and Seazynn Gilliland) navigate the everyday challenges of being teens, from identity to first loves, they also explore their deep passion for music. Rolling Stone and The New York Times called High School one of the best shows of 2022. It's strange why the series has been so underappreciated by mass audiences. High School is one of those shows that anyone who grew up in that era would appreciate, whether you like or even know of Tegan And Sara or not.

A League of Their Own (2022)
A League of Their Own - Official Trailer | Prime Video
A victim of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, A League of Their Own received positive reviews and was actually renewed for a four-episode second and final season. But it was scrapped, and viewers were left disappointed. Nonetheless, the first season of the comedy-drama, based on the 1992 movie of the same name, is worth checking out.
Set in 1943, it’s about a women’s professional baseball league and the ladies who pursue playing the typically male-dominated sport. At the heart are two women. Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson) decides to follow her dream of playing professional baseball while her husband is away at war. Meanwhile, Maxine (Chanté Adams), a Black woman who loves the sport, struggles to find a team willing to even let her try out. With plenty of heart and humor, it’s a shame A League of Their Own didn’t get the attention it deserved based on its overwhelmingly positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike.
