LG’s new earbuds have a cool feature that improves call quality

LG’s just announced its 2021 updates to its Tone Free line of true wireless earbuds. The FP series, which includes the FP5, FP8, and FP9, will be available in the coming months. Along with the return of features from the 2020 FN series like active noise cancellation (ANC) and a charging case that uses UV light to sterilize the earbuds after use, the FP series gets three new features: You can use the charging case as a Bluetooth wireless transmitter (FP9 only), the right earbud can be used as a handheld microphone for times when you want extra privacy, or there’s too much noise nearby, and Headphone Spatial Processing from Meridian Audio.

The FP9 and FP8 are available in Charcoal Black, Pearl White, or Haze Gold. They boast LG’s auto-cleaning UVnano charging case, which LG claims has been proven to reduce bacteria on the earbuds’ speaker mesh by 99.9% in five minutes when the case is charging.  The one feature the FP9 lack, oddly, is wireless charging, which is only available on the FP8.

The FP9’s major distinction from the rest of the Tone Free lineup is its “Plug & Wireless” capability. The earbuds come with a USB-C to AUX cable, which connects the charging case to any analog source of audio. The case can then retransmit that audio over Bluetooth to the FP9 earbuds. LG hasn’t indicated what kind of toll that feature takes on the charging case’s battery life. We saw this feature show up earlier this year on the Bowers & Wilkins PI7 true wireless earbuds.

And while that ability may not be original, we’ve never seen LG’s “Whispering Mode” before, which lets you hold the right earbud close to your mouth as a dedicated microphone. Typically, true wireless earbuds don’t deal well with noisy environments when making calls. The microphones are simply too far from your mouth to be super effective. If Whispering Mode proves useful, I can see it showing up as a standard feature across the industry.

For both the FP9 and FP8, you get a claimed 10 hours per charge when ANC is turned off, and a total of 24 hours of use when you include the charging case. A five-minute quick charge will get you an extra hour of listening time. The earbuds are rated IPX4 for water resistance, which should help them deal with sweat and rain, while the ear tips are made from medical-grade, hypoallergenic silicone.

We’re curious about the new Headphone Spatial Processing from Meridian Audio that LG has added to the 2021 Tone Free models. LG describes it as enveloping the listener with a sound that seems to originate from all directions. Along with spatial processing is a similar-sounding feature called 3D Sound Stage, which purportedly expands the sound stage via spatial up-mixing to bring users more lifelike audio.

On August 2, LG announced the price of the FP8 at $180 and said they will be available before September. We’re still waiting to hear about the FP5 and FP9 pricing and availability.

Jabra’s most affordable workout earbuds debut at CES 2022
Jabra Elite 4 Active earbuds.

Jabra is using CES 2022 to bring our attention to the newest member of its Elite family of true wireless earbuds: The $119 Elite 4 Active, a set of waterproof, active noise canceling (ANC) earbuds that fit between the $99 Elite 3 and the $180 Elite 7 Active. They're available starting January 3, in navy, black and light mint.

Like the more expensive Elite 7 Active, Jabra says the Elite 4 Active offer a secure and comfortable fit without the need for hooks or wingtips, but don't expect the 4 Active to be quite as secure as the 7 -- they don't have the 7's ShakeGrip rubber coating. With an IP57 rating, however, the Elite 4 Active have the same level of protection from water and dust as the Elite 7 Active.

JLab’s new skin tone earbuds go beyond black and white
JLab Go Air Tones.

Sneaking in just ahead of CES 2022, JLab has debuted a new set of true wireless earbuds that come in a variety of skin tone-inspired colors. The $20 Go Air Tones are based on JLab's Go Air Pop true wireless earbuds, but they feature skin tones that have been specially selected by Orly Color Labs, a division of the Los Angeles-based nail care brand Orly. The new earbuds are up for pre-order on December 30 and will start shipping in mid-January 2022.

Each Go Air Tones matches one of seven specific Pantone colors selected by Orly, in warm, neutral, and cool undertones, reminiscent of the enhanced skin tone emoji that Apple introduced in 2015. Recognizing that seven skin tones may not be enough to match everyone's particular preference, JLab is also taking requests for additional colors via its website.

Denon’s first true wireless earbuds are now available starting at just $99
Denon Noise Cancelling Earbuds

Denon is the latest big audio brand to join the true wireless earbuds world, and it's doing so in fine form, with two models: The Denon Noise Cancelling Earbuds (AH-C830NCW), which sell for $159, and the $99 Denon Wireless Earbuds (AH-C630W). Both come in your choice of black or white and are available to buy starting November 16.

Denon isn't exactly taking the true wireless world by storm with these two models -- neither offer features we haven't seen on countless other models from Sony, Bose, Apple, and others -- but they are quite competitively priced for what you get. Both offer IPX4 protection from water and sweat, and both have what Denon describes as "astonishing levels of detail, dimensionality and dynamics never before experienced with conventional earbuds." That sounds like classic marketing hyperbole, but at least Denon has a long history of walking the talk when it comes to audio quality, so for now we'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
