How Dome-estic: Inside an energy-efficient dome home

Buckminster Fuller is credited with popularizing geodesic dome homes, though the design isn’t exactly found in every neighborhood in the U.S. Still, the structures captured the imagination of many and are still being produced. For example, Timothy Oulton recently built the Dome Home in a lychee garden in southern China. It’s like something right out of Epcot.

Made of 80 pre-fabricated timber panels that fit together, the self-supporting shell has no pillars. Its unique construction makes it energy-efficient, watertight, and well insulated. Custom furniture fits into the building’s curved walls, including the couch, chairs, and stainless-steel and marble kitchen. It’s pretty cool-looking; maybe someday soon we’ll be seeing more dome homes around.

This is how much it costs to run a smart garden, and how much it can save
nordstrom memorial day sale half year smart garden 3

I've talked a lot about smart gardens before. They're one of my favorite smart home devices overall, especially with the rising cost of fresh produce and with winter just around the corner. I like fresh ingredients, and it's often less expensive to grow them at home than it is to go to the store and buy them.

On the other hand, it's not always easy for someone to do that if they live in an apartment. Balconies don't always get enough sunlight (as my failed experiment to grow potatoes this year can attest), and the available yield is small. Smart gardens offer an easy way to circumvent these woes by controlling the light output and watering schedule and taking the guesswork out of the process.
