Check your Fitbit from the wall using Wink’s Relay light switch

Not many smart home hubs come with screens; you’re supposed to control everything with your phone or voice. But Wink thinks there are times when you just want to do a status check and shouldn’t need to pull out and unlock your phone. That’s where its light switch with touchscreen, the Relay, comes in. It just got a bunch of upgrades. Starting today, you can use it as an intercom, program it as an IFTTT trigger, hail an Uber, and check your Fitbit steps.

“We want people to use Wink more but use the app less,” Wink’s CTO, Nathan Smith, told Digital Trends. That means you can use the Relay to order or cancel an Uber but also track its progress on the screen, so you can see whether you have time to floss your teeth before darting out the door. If you used your Amazon Echo to call the Uber, you’ll still get updates on the car’s progress on the switch’s screen. “Passive display and voice control are really complementary in that way,” says Smith.

The Fitbit widget just displays the number of steps you’ve taken, so your whole family can cheer you on (or mock your extra couch time). For the IFTTT integration, Smith sees it as a possible way for kids to keep in touch: They can hit the switch, and you’ll get a text that says they’re home. If you don’t want your child to accidentally — or mischievously — call an Uber, you can set up different Relays with different accounts. These new capabilities are all software related, so they should hit existing devices via an update.

A single Relay costs $99, but a two-pack is going for $149. Doubling up allows you to now use them as intercoms; they’ve always had microphones and speakers, but now you can actually take advantage of them.

Smith hinted that Wink has plans for other integrations, so the 4.3-inch touchscreen might get more crowded later this year.

Alexa can now set sleep timers to simulate a sunrise using your smart lights

If you have Alexa-compatible smart lights and live in the U.S., you've got some new features that will be rolling out this week. With the new Alexa lighting features, you can set up wake-up lights or sleep timers and create new Alexa Routines to dim or brighten over a certain stretch of time, giving you a huge amount of control over how your home is lighted. Here's how the new features work.

Wake-up Lighting
One new feature is called Wake-up Lighting. This feature basically makes your smart lights mimic the sun rising in your home, but on your schedule. For example, you can make it so your bedside lamp turns on and gradually gets brighter when it's time to wake up. To set up Wake-up Lighting say something like, “Alexa, set an alarm for (time) with my bedside lamp.” If you want your light to do this every day, you'll need to set up a recurring alarm by saying something like, “Alexa, set up an alarm for every morning at (time) with my bedside lamp.” If you have a lighting group set up you can say, “Alexa, wake me up at (time) with lights.”

Dyson’s first dedicated wet floor cleaner is built to tackle all types of spills
A person pushing the Dyson WashG1.

Dyson is primarily known for its lineup of high-end vacuums, but today it has officially launched its first dedicated wet floor cleaner, the Dyson WashG1. Built specifically to handle all sorts of messes on hard floors, it can tackle both wet and dry debris in a single pass -- making it a nice complement to other floor cleaners like robot vacuums and cordless vacuums.

The WashG1 is built with two motorized, counter-rotating microfiber rollers. These are continuously saturated as you push the device around your home, allowing them to pull all sorts of spills and stains off your hard floors. A 27-ounce clean water tank is located above the rollers and should provide enough moisture to clean up to 3,100 square feet. Dyson says the device is suitable for tile, laminate, vinyl, and sealed wood floors.
