New Apple Watch Studio lets you mix and match watches and bands

Apple Watch Studio, a brand new way to purchase an Apple Watch, now lets your wrist do its own thing. Apple announced at its September 10th keynote the debut of an all-new Apple Watch Studio, which consists of both an online tool and an in-store experience that lets customers pair any model watch with any band they want. According to Apple, that is some 1,000 possible pairings.

It seems like a no brainer, but up until now, buyers had very limited choices of which bands they could choose with their initial Apple Watch purchase. Now, you can get anything you want, upfront. Don’t like that rubberized sport band? That Sport Loop doesn’t come in the right color? No problem. Go crazy with any band that’s available. Buy two, even. Uh oh — this could be dangerous.

Previously, Apple Stores had just a couple of watches available to try on and a very small selection of bands to accompany it, and the same was true for buying an Apple Watch online. If you didn’t fancy the band Apple chose, you were free to whip out the old charge card and purchase a different one either from Apple or from the legions of third-party vendors. With the Studio, in-store buyers will get to see and immediately order more varieties of bands and watch combinations to get the exact ones they want right away.

For the online store, you start with the Apple Watch Tool and then get started in creating your own personal style. First, you choose the watch size, then the finish (Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Titanium, or Ceramic), and then comes the fun part: You get a choice of four band types, Sport Band, Sport Loop, Leather, or Stainless Steel. Then, click “I’m Done” which then takes you to the check out page. And yes, you can still change your mind by clicking the Create Your Style button, which takes you back to the beginning so you can mix and match to your heart’s content.

Both the Series 5 aluminum and stainless steel models come in a silver, gold, and space gray finish, alongside the new titanium cases, which come in natural or space black. New bands sport vibrant colors like pomegranate and midnight blue alongside new colors for the Nike Sport Band and reflective Nike Sport Loop. And then there’s the ultra sophisticated Apple Watch Hermès which updates last year’s color block band with a Della Cavalleria print and a sleek all-black band.

Most new watches and bands will be available on September 20, but you can pre-order with the fully functional Apple Watch Studio right now. Apple Watch Nike is available for order today too, and will be available on October 4.

8 watches you should buy instead of an Apple Watch
A person wearing the Apple Watch Series 9.

The Apple Watch Series 9 is the best smartwatch you can buy, regardless of the fact you can only use it with an iPhone. It's also great that it comes in three flavors — the Series 9, along with the Apple Watch SE 2, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 — to suit many more people and pockets than you may first think. However, perhaps you want something a little different on your wrist or even a weekend alternative when you don’t feel like wearing a touchscreen watch.

That’s where this list should help you out, as we’ve gathered eight watches to buy instead of the Apple Watch. Notice I said “watches,” and not just smartwatches, as some non-connected wristwear has been included. Our choices cover the entire Apple Watch range in terms of price, even going above and below, to give you some real inspiration about a watch to buy instead of — or as well as — the superb Apple Watch.

Is the Apple Watch Series 9 waterproof?
Exercise data showing on the Apple Watch Series 9.

The Apple Watch Series 9, released in September 2023, is the latest addition to Apple's line of smartwatches. Alongside the Apple Watch Ultra 2, the Series 9 boasts many impressive features and upgrades.

The Apple Watch Series 9 resembles its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 8, in terms of design. However, it does come with a few notable improvements. The watch offers more peak brightness, which makes it easier to view in bright sunlight, and the new chip is faster and more efficient than the previous model. It can also process some Siri requests entirely on-device, allowing you to perform certain commands even when not connected to your iPhone.

One feature will make the Apple smart ring worth waiting for
An Apple smart ring concept by Jonas Daehnert

The wearable market is constantly evolving. It started with fitness trackers that were worn on your wrist, and then we got smartwatches such as the Apple Watch in 2015. These days, smartwatches are a dime a dozen, but we are quickly entering a new era of wearables: the smart ring. One of the first smart rings to hit the market was the Oura Ring, which launched in 2015 through a Kickstarter campaign. The second iteration came out in 2018, and the current third generation of the Oura Ring was released in 2021.

I’ve been using the Oura Ring for several years now, but many competitors have shown up in the space recently: Movano’s Evie Ring, the RingConn Smart Ring, Ultrahuman Ring Air, Circular Ring Slim, and more. Samsung even teased its own upcoming Galaxy Ring at the end of its January 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event.
