The Apple Watch Series 8 and SE 2 sound more boring than we thought

Last year’s Apple Watch Series 7 was a peculiar device. It was heavily rumored to get a major redesign to match the flat rails of the iPhone 13. That didn’t happen. Instead, we got an iterative upgrade with very minimal changes. Now, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Apple Watch Series 8 could give us another year of tepid Apple Watch updates.

Gurman said in his Power On newsletter that the S8 chip of the next Apple Watch will be similar to the S7 chip found in the Apple Watch Series 7. Specifically, Gurman says the “S8 chip will have the same specifications as the S7.” For reference, the S7 chip is the same as the S6, which powered the Apple Watch Series 6 in 2020. That’s two years of no major processor changes for the Apple Watch. Gurman goes on to say that we could get “an all-new processor” in 2023, but the lack of chipset updates this year is disappointing to hear.

Apple is also expected to introduce a new Watch SE 2 alongside the Watch Series 8. “The SE will stick to the screen size of the current model, rather than moving up to the larger Series 7 size. But it may get the same S8 chip as the Series 8,” says the report. This will be an upgrade from the S5 chip in the current Apple Watch SE from 2020.

Gurman also goes on to say that Apple may finally discontinue the Apple Watch Series 3. This is something that was previously rumored earlier this year, and Gurman doubles down on that point. “The software update drops support for the Apple Watch Series 3, so I’d finally expect that model to be discontinued in the fall. The current SE could slide into that Series 3 price point, with the new SE becoming the mid-tier option,” Gurman explains.

According to past rumors, Apple is prepping a sports-focused model with a rugged casing in the Apple Watch Series 8 lineup. As a result, we could be looking at three Watch Series 8 devices. The upcoming smartwatch will run Apple’s latest WatchOS 9, which was introduced at WWDC 2022. It includes four new watch faces, workout app updates, better sleep tracking, as well as a new Medications feature. You will also get Heart Rate Zones in the Workout app that will measure the intensity of your workouts regardless of your exercise regimen.

Google seems to have accidentally leaked its next flagship phone, the Google Pixel 8 Pro. And not only that, but it did so on its official website. The leak was spotted on the same day that Apple announced the launch date of the iPhone 15 series. Talk about consumer tech serendipity at its opportunistic best. The Pixel 8 Pro marketing render was first spotted on the official Google Store website’s subscriptions page by journalist Mishaal Rahman.

Event invite for Google's Made by Google event happening in October 2023.

Apple sent out press invites for its highly anticipated iPhone 15 event yesterday. Just one day later, Google has now sent out invites for its latest Made by Google event happening this October — where we expect to see the Google Pixel 8.

You can see the invite above, which confirms that Google is holding an in-person event where it's going to "introduce the latest additions to our Pixel portfolio of devices." The event is happening on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, in New York City, and it will (presumably) be livestreamed for folks to watch at home.

It’s official — Apple will announce the iPhone 15 on September 12
Invite for Apple's September 2023 event.

It's official. After months upon months of speculation, we now know when Apple will announce its latest batch of iPhones, Apple Watches, and more. On August 29, Apple sent out press invites for its latest event, which is set to take place on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

The event invite shows the Apple logo at the top, stylized with what looks like grains of sand in gray, blue, and silvery colors. This is almost certainly a nod to the iPhone 15 Pro, which is heavily rumored to come in black, silver, gray, and dark blue colors this year. Below the Apple logo is similarly colored text that reads "Wonderlust."
