Finally! Google Hangouts 7.0 speeds up quick replies on Android

Google’s Hangouts app on Android unifies SMS, Google+, and Google Voice messages, but not very gracefully. As the many, many contributors to its support forum can attest, the app’s unpredictable performance and baffling omission of basic functions can be frustrating — to say the least. If Hangouts’ rapid-fire updates are any indication, though, Google’s at least aware of the problems and actively fixing them. The latest version to hit Android, Hangouts 7.0, notably borrows a major feature from its iOS counterpart: quick replies from notifications.

work on Android much the same way they do on iOS. Hangouts notifications now sport a nifty “reply” button beneath the content of incoming messages, and tapping on that button presents you with an input box in which you can peck out a reply. It’s a basic but long-requested time saver, and a welcome one. Previously, users had to launch Hangouts to type a simple “OK” or “Sounds good” in response.

Another highlight is the ability to create home screen links to particular message threads. If you’re carrying on a conversation you’d like to be able to access quickly in the future, you can save a shortcut of it to your home screen from the thread options menu within Hangouts. The icons, which work for both group and individual chats, appear on the home screen as a circular cutout of the involved parties’ profile pictures.

Beyond aesthetic enhancements to a few settings screens, the new Hangouts is otherwise relatively light on new features, but Android Police reports that it packs a precursor of changes to come, including a pop up that prompts users to “Check out Google’s new SMS app,” Messenger. Google introduced the bare bones text client more than a year ago without much fanfare, but rumors persist that the Mountain View giant intends to retire Hangouts’ SMS support in favor of it soon. The message in the new Hangouts implies as much. “For sending simple, fast SMS text messages, try Messenger,” it reads.

Sadly absent in the new Hangouts is any sign of Google’s artificial intelligence messaging project. In December, the Wall Street Journal reported on the company’s plans launch an automated chatbot service that’d quickly answer simple questions. When it launches, it’ll reportedly be positioned to compete with Facebook’s own upcoming smart service, “M,” although the details remain murky. Here’s hoping signs of it appear sooner than later.

If you’ve already got Hangouts on Android, the new version will appear as an update. If not, you can grab it for free from the Play Store.

Google Messages is about to make finding group chats so much easier
Google messages versus samsung messages app icons side by side on Galaxy Z Fold 5.

For all its utility, Google Messages has been missing one big feature: the ability to easily search for group chats and send a new message to them. That's about to change. Users running the Google Message beta (version 20240820_00_RC00) can test this feature for themselves, but it's not yet available for everyone.

When you start a new conversation, the "To" field displays your contacts. Before this beta, the field would display only individual people. Even if you had an existing group chat, you wouldn't be able to send a message straight to it from the new message screen. The new feature means you can look for specific group names and participants; in addition, it displays the last message sent to the group.

Google is getting ready to remove lots of Android apps from the Play Store
Samsung Galaxy S23 showing Google Play Store

Starting next month, Google will require apps on the Play Store to provide a "stable, engaging, responsive user experience." If they don't, the company plans to eventually remove those apps from the store.

This policy is part of Google's latest spam policy update and is designed to eliminate apps with "limited functionality and content," such as text-only apps and single wallpaper apps. The new rules take effect on Saturday, August 31.
