Google Photos is about to get a big AI upgrade

At today’s Google I/O 2024 keynote, the company announced that a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature is coming to Google Photos. “Ask Photos” is a new Google Gemini feature coming to the popular service, which now sees over 6 billion photos and videos uploaded to it daily.

With the new “Ask Photos” feature, you can soon search your photo library using a conversational approach rather than just keywords. For example, Google demonstrated that you can ask Google Photos for your license plate number or for photos of your child swimming over time by simply asking questions such as “What’s my license plate again?” or “When did my daughter learn to swim?”

You can take this even further by asking, “Show me how (my daughter’s) swimming has progressed.” When asked this question, Google looks back at images by date and context to show you a result.

With this new Google Gemini feature, searching in Google Photos promises to be more accessible than ever before. In doing so, reliving memories is that much easier.

The Ask Photos feature will launch on Google Photos later this summer.

Gemini AI is coming to cars, wearables, and more this year, Google confirms

Google's Gemini AI has been a hit with phone users, with the chatbot offering the ability to answer complex questions, provide information in bullet points, and giving the option to export answers to a Doc file. Other features include the ability to analyze files, interact with the phone's camera to give information about what you're looking at, and other assistant-like functions which put it ahead of Apple's Siri. It's been out as an app for Android and iOS devices for a while now, and will also be coming to Google TV.

Now, Google has confirmed that people will be able to use Gemini on a wider variety of devices, as it will be coming to Android Auto, wearables, and more. It will be rolling out to these devices later this year, Google announced.

Google Photos can now turn your pictures into Ultra HDR images

It won't be available to everyone just yet but Google Photos has started rolling out a new feature that lets you turn your normal photos into Ultra HDR images. These "High Dynamic Range" photos capture a much wider range of brightness levels and produce images with more detail and color range.

As reported by Android Authority, this feature has been hidden in the app for a while and just recently started appearing for select users. To see the effects of HDR, you need to view your photo on an HDR display. There are plenty of smartphones that have displays like this, such as the Google Pixel 9a, Samsung Galaxy S25, or OnePlus 13R, which will let you appreciate your upgraded photos right on your phone. If your screen isn't HDR, however, you'll still be able to convert your photos and view the results when you put it on a different display.
