Is it the Honor Honor Pad 2, or just the Pad 2? Either way, Honor has a new tablet

Honor, the smartphone brand which shares technology with Huawei, has announced several new devices at an event in China. The new Honor 6X smartphone took center stage, but it was joined by the Honor S1 smartwatch and a tablet called the Honor Pad 2. Does this, rather clumsily, make it the Honor Honor Pad 2? Or is it the Honor Pad 2? At the moment, it’s one of the great unsolved mysteries of our time.

Huawei also recently revealed a new tablet, the MediaPad M3, which we really like; but sadly the Honor Pad 2 doesn’t quite meet the strong specifications offered by the Huawei machine. Instead, it’s closer to Huawei’s MediaPad M2 from 2015. There are two versions, one with Wi-Fi and the other with an LTE modem for on-the-move tablet fun. It has an 8-inch display on the front, and the resolution is 1920 x 1200 pixels, ideal for showing off Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Honor’s user interface over the top.

Honor has chosen a Qualcomm processor to power the Honor Pad 2. It’s the Snapdragon 616, backed up with 3GB of RAM, and a choice of either 16GB or 32GB storage space. A MicroSD card slot can be used to increase this amount. There are a pair of cameras, an 8-megapixel cam on the rear, and a 2-megapixel camera on the front, plus a 4,800mAh battery to keep the whole thing going.

No, it’s not the most exciting specification, but the design is pleasing, and the price is very attractive. The 16GB model with Wi-Fi is the equivalent of $150, while the top-of-the-range LTE 32GB version is around $220. At the moment, like the Honor 6X and the Honor S1, the Honor Pad 2 has only been announced for release in China. Honor does sell its hardware internationally, so there’s a chance one, two, or all three of these devices will see a wider release in the future.

How I made my Android tablet better than a Windows laptop

Roughly two years ago, I argued how almost every company making Android devices wants an ecosystem like Apple, but they just can't have it! Two years later, I still feel the same, even though brands have landscaped their ecosystems to present better cross-device connectivity (an essence of ecosystems).

However, brands haven't been able to overcome the detachment between Android and Windows yet, which has especially alienated productivity-oriented devices like big and powerful Android tablets from realizing their full potential.

The future of the Google Pixel Tablet doesn’t look good
Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Google’s Pixel lineup has been pretty solid lately -- at least, for most of its hardware, anyway. But there’s one Google Pixel device that seems to have flopped so hard that it may end up being a one-off thing, and that’s the Pixel Tablet.

If you’re hoping to hear some news about a proper Pixel Tablet 2, we have some bad news. According to a recent report from Android Headlines, it seems that Google has already canceled plans for a Pixel Tablet 3. But wait! Another report on Android Authority claims that it was actually the Pixel Tablet 2 that was canned, not the Pixel Tablet 3. Considering that you can’t have a third iteration before having a second, I think it’s safe to say that whatever the next version was going to be, we’re not going to see it — at least not for a while.

The Onyx Boox Palma 2 is the gadget I didn’t know I wanted
The Boox Palma 2 in white.

Due to my line of work, I get to dabble a lot with mobile devices. Smartphones, tablets, wearable tech — you name it, I get to try it. For the most part, when I deal with smartphones and tablets, they typically have fancy OLED displays that look beautiful and colorful. But every now and then, I come across an interesting device that only shows up in black-and-white.

What am I talking about? E-ink devices, of course. The Onyx Boox Palma 2 is the latest gadget to come across my desk, and it’s one that certainly stands out among the crowd. It’s a mobile e-ink device in the form of a phone, and it even runs Android. It’s a device like no other except for its predecessor.
