Bend or break? Watch the Nothing Phone 2 face its first durability test

One of the biggest smartphone launches of the year took place on Tuesday, and popular YouTuber Zack Nelson — he of JerryRigEverything — wasted no time in subjecting the new Nothing Phone 2 to one of his trademark durability tests.

Now, Nelson usually accompanies his torture-test videos with a dryly delivered though often amusing commentary, but on this occasion, he decided that, being the Nothing phone an’ all that, he’d say absolutely nothing and let the visuals do the talking instead.

For those unfamiliar with the YouTuber’s testing procedure, put simply, he performs the kind of unspeakable acts on new phones that no one should ever dream of carrying out themselves. Indeed, he does it so you don’t have to.

And while smartphones in the real world will almost certainly never face the kind of stress that Nelson puts them through (after all, who’s going to accidentally hold a naked flame to their phone’s screen for 30 seconds?), his enthusiastically delivered tests do give you a clear sense of just how durable a device is.

I have Nothing 2 say...

As you can see, the Nothing Phone 2 holds up pretty well to Nelson’s various antics, which include scratching, scraping, burning, and, always the tense part of his videos, bending. Yes, some phones snap clean in two. The Nothing Phone 2 didn’t.

Perhaps the hardest part to watch is when Nelson drags the box cutter down the side of the Android phone’s aluminum frame, which, as you’d expect, cuts up pretty badly. On the plus side, a decent amount of scratching on the in-display fingerprint sensor (it also has face unlock) didn’t stop it from continuing to function as it should.

The bottom line is, the Nothing Phone 2 looks like a pretty solid piece of kit, earning it several thumbs-ups from Nelson throughout the video.

Preorders for the Nothing Phone 2 are live now, while regular sales start on Monday, July 17.

The date is set for the arrival of Nothing’s next phone. The British upstart’s upcoming flashy gizmo — the Nothing Phone 2a — will arrive on March 5, right after the Mobile World Congress 2024 consumer tech fest concludes. In a short hype film that dropped earlier today, Nothing teased that the device could be cheaper than the Nothing Phone 2, which chased flagship credentials.

Once again, a standout design will be the key selling point, but the looks will be married to meaningful tricks. CEO Carl Pei, an alum of OnePlus, took a few potshots at Chinese smartphone brands in the non-flagship segment (as well as Samsung), ribbing them for chasing volume sales while cramming in parts that are barely useful to the buyer. two-megapixel macro cameras, eh? Of course, a UI loaded with bloatware and ads was also in the crosshairs.

The Nothing Phone 2a might be missing a very important feature

More rumors have emerged of a new Nothing smartphone, and unlike its predecessors, it's missing a big part of what made Nothing notable. According to leaks released by Steve McFly (with SmartPrix), the new Nothing Phone 2a will not use the company's innovative Glyph lighting system, eschewing it in favor of ... well, a plain back panel.

The claimed official renders show the back panel of Nothing's upcoming midrange smartphone. It's clad in white, with two vertically arranged camera lenses in the top-left corner, reminiscent of Nothing's past phones. The Nothing Phone 2a still has the see-through-style design, where internal components are left on display through the back panel, though at this time, it's unclear whether the phone has a true clear back or whether the components are just an image printed beneath the panel.

British smartphone upstart Nothing is readying a new smartphone that will hit the shelves later this year. The Nothing Phone 2a seems to be a direct successor of the Nothing Phone 1, which is likely targeting a value-centric midrange status.

“With Phone 2a, we’ve really doubled down on the core user needs — performance, camera, you need it,” says co-founder Akis Evangelidis. He further adds that with the Nothing Phone 2a, the company is leveraging the core niceties of the Nothing Phone 2, which chased flagship standards. Nothing confirmed the Nothing Phone 2a's existence in a "Community Update" video uploaded to its YouTube channel.
