WatchMe may be the cutest Apple Watch charging stand you can buy — for now

WATCHme
Charging an Apple Watch can be delightful and fun, thanks to the WatchMe. Just crown your Apple Watch onto the charging stand’s head and you have yourself an endearing creature wearing your smartwatch as its one-eyed goggle. However, the stand’s cute factor may ultimately depend on clearing two big obstacles.

The WatchMe, which may be the cutest charging stand for the Apple Watch out there right now, comes from Vivien Muller, a freelance designer based in Paris. It’s a two-part stand that measures 3.56 inches tall and has a hole where the round magnetic Apple Watch charger can be placed. Place an Apple Watch onto the head of the “Watchus cyclopus” and you have a Minion-like charging stand.

The recyclable charging stand comes in three colors: white, black, and yellow. Owners can mix and match colors to create two-color stands. Stickers are also available to give the WatchMe mustaches, a tie, or bowtie.

Muller plans to release a WatchMe app to accompany the charging stand so owners can play animations (e.g., a roaming eyeball) on their charging Apple Watches. However, he notes that there’s currently no way to override the automatic standby mode and that “Apple may reject the app because it’s too simple.” If neither hurdle is overcome, the charging stand would lose a lot of cute points.

The WatchMe has a Kickstarter campaign, which has raised more than $7,600 of its $21,984 goal (20,000 euros) at the moment. The project closes August 20 at 6 a.m. EDT. Estimated global deliveries are expected to begin in December.

Apple may soon allow manufacturers in its Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod (MFi) licensing program to embed Apple Watch charging pads directly into the accessories they build, according to 9to5Mac. This would mean products like the WatchMe could be manufactured with a built-in charging pad rather than a gaping hole where a buyer must place their own charging pad, for instance.

8 watches you should buy instead of an Apple Watch
A person wearing the Apple Watch Series 9.

The Apple Watch Series 9 is the best smartwatch you can buy, regardless of the fact you can only use it with an iPhone. It's also great that it comes in three flavors — the Series 9, along with the Apple Watch SE 2, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 — to suit many more people and pockets than you may first think. However, perhaps you want something a little different on your wrist or even a weekend alternative when you don’t feel like wearing a touchscreen watch.

That’s where this list should help you out, as we’ve gathered eight watches to buy instead of the Apple Watch. Notice I said “watches,” and not just smartwatches, as some non-connected wristwear has been included. Our choices cover the entire Apple Watch range in terms of price, even going above and below, to give you some real inspiration about a watch to buy instead of — or as well as — the superb Apple Watch.

Apple Watch X: The 9 biggest things I want to see
watchOS 10 running on an Apple Watch Ultra.

The original Apple Watch was announced in September 2014, with Apple's first smartwatch released in April 2015. Lat year, we got the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, both of which were relatively iterative upgrades. Now, we should focus on what Apple could be doing for the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch, similar to what the company did with the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, which gave us the iPhone X.

Rumors suggest that this anniversary smartwatch could be called the “Apple Watch X," and we could see it later this year or, more likely, in 2025.

I love my Apple Watch, but it pisses me off every single day
Someone wearing an Apple Watch Series 5 on their wrist.

I’m in a dysfunctional relationship with my Apple Watch, and it’s only getting worse.

I love that it gives me quick access to Siri. I love that I’ve almost never missed a phone call since I started wearing it. I love being able to glance at a text message and know if I need to respond quickly or if I can ignore it (like I do with its constant reminders to stand up).
