Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra: everything we know so far

The race to make the best superhero game isn’t slowing down as we await the first upcoming video game from Skydance New Media, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. This is one of two games to feature Black Panther, but this game, as the name spells out, is set in the past, during World War II. That, of course, can only mean Captain America will be the other major hero to show up. This is a very unique pairing we haven’t seen in games before. Given the pedigree of Marvel and the talent at Skydance New Media, most notably Amy Hennig of Uncharted fame, there are some major expectations for this superhero romp right up there with the likes of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and Perfect Dark. We won’t waste time trying to cut off the Hydra’s head and go straight to the heart of the matter with all the details we know so far.

The current release window for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is 2025. The last news we got related to the release was that the game would be published by Plaion. This news didn’t come with any specific updates but does indicate that the game is progressing smoothly and likely still on target for a 2025 release.

Speaking to The Direct, actor Khary Payton may have let a more specific release window slip. “We’re still working. We’re planning on 2025… We’re thinking like a Christmas situation. But I’m so excited.” While Payton would have more inside knowledge about when the game is coming out, it is always possible that he has incorrect or out-of-date information. However, a fall or winter 2025 release is looking more and more likely. He also priased Amy Hennig and indicated that the game is in great hands. “I still can’t believe that it’s happening. But it’s going to be so good. Amy Hennig, who did the ‘Uncharted’ series, was the director and writer of the series creator, she is just so amazing and I’m like, ‘Man, we couldn’t have asked for a better head of this project.’ So I know it’s taken a while, but trust me, it is going to be worth it.”

An interesting note is that we still don’t have any confirmed platforms for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. We can assume it will be on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, and likely PC as well, but won’t know for sure until further details are given.

Trailers

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra | Story Trailer

The story trailer establishes the setting and characters for this game. The story will focus on Captain America, aka Steve Rogers, and Azzuri, the Black Panther active during the 1940,s but also two additional characters: Gabriel Jones, a member of the Howling Commandoes, and Wakandan spy Nanali. Each seems to have their own reasons for going after Hydra, but the trailer makes it clear that their alliance is shaky at best. The trailer ends with them throwing down on a bridge.

No gameplay is available just yet for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, but the trailer does at least hint at what we might expect. First, while not confirmed, it appears that we will be playing as at least both Captain America and Black Panther, if not Gabriel and Nanali as well. Black Panther is shown doing more stealth and platforming, while Cap appears to take a more direct approach with his shield. Whether you will be able to choose your character, swap between them for specific chapters, or any other such details is still a mystery.

Preorder

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra isn’t coming until a nebulous time in 2025, so we have no preorder information to give. Marvel likes to give plenty of bonuses and special editions, so we will be sure to update you once those are known.

As Marvel ramps up toward Avengers: Doomsday, one of the big new additions to that cast will be the Fantastic Four. We've gotten our first glimpse at the heroes, who occupy their own retro-futuristic universe.

Now, director Matt Shakman is providing some more details on that universe, and just how far removed it is from the rest of the MCU.

There were plenty of expected names in the extended cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday, along with a few notable absences. Perhaps the most surprising addition to the cast, though, was the return of many of the original Fox X-Men from the early 2000s trilogy. Among the most notable actors returning are Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, James Marsden, Rebecca Romjin, and Alan Cumming, who played Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United.

In a recent interview with Jenna Bush-Hager and Olivia Munn, Cumming said that he was excited to be able to step back into the character after more than 20 years.
