Suffering from app drawer withdrawal on your LG G5? Here’s how to get it back

Add as a preferred source on Google

The LG G5 is a unique smartphone indeed. No other phone sports an all metal unibody with the ability to swap the battery, but with every step forward, there must be a step backward. LG decided to remove the app drawer from the G5 to make the software appear more iPhone-like, but that decision left a lot of unsatisfied customers. Good news! LG heard your cries and brought it back.

The app drawer, which is the circle icon with 6 dots within it at the bottom of each home screen, shows all your apps in one place without cluttering all your screens. It’s been a mainstay on Android for many years and one of the biggest reasons why people love Android.

LG most likely opted to eliminate the app drawer because it wanted to simplify things for people switching over from iOS. Without an app drawer, all your app icons appear on the home screens, and it’s up to you to organize them.

If you want the app drawer back, open Settings > About phone > Update Center > App Updates. You should hopefully see an option to download updates for both the Home & App Drawer and Home Selector. You will need both. Droid Life is reporting that international unlocked and T-Mobile models are showing the updates already.

After you have downloaded the updates, just tap on the Home button. You’ll see a popup asking what you want to use as your default home launcher. Assuming you want the app drawer back, select Home & App Drawer. If you don’t want the app drawer, then select Home.

If you want to change it again later, open Settings > Applications > Default Applications. Now select Home and select the launcher of your choice.

You may have read earlier this month that LG already brought back the app launcher, but it wasn’t for the same software the LG G5 runs. The G5 runs UX 5.0 over Android Marshmallow, but the app launcher released earlier was for UX 4.0 devices. You could get it to work, but the update described in this post is the official version for the G5.

Whether you love or hate the app drawer, one thing we can all agree on is that it’s better to have a choice. So kudos to LG for letting its customers decide on whether they want it or not.

Financial strain and rising component costs are driving OnePlus out of the US and Europe.
OnePlus Nord 6 in hand

If you have been following OnePlus' exit rumors for a while, this news probably feels familiar. Reports about OnePlus scaling back in the US and Europe have surfaced multiple times over the past several months, only for the company to firmly deny them.

Now, Bloomberg reports OnePlus will actually begin ceasing operations in the US and Europe as soon as this week, and this time it looks real. The move is part of a larger restructuring at parent company Oppo, and OnePlus plans to eventually exit the rest of the world, including India, sometime in 2027, though it will remain active in China for now.

The stable Android 17 rollout begins with Xiaomi's latest flagship, putting it ahead of Samsung and other rivals.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra

Android 17 rolled out to Pixel phones last month, and if you were hoping your non-Pixel Android phone would catch up anytime soon, you might have to wait. Samsung is still running the One UI 9 in Public beta, and most other manufacturers haven't even announced when their skins will get the Android 17 treatment.

So it's a genuine surprise that Xiaomi, of all companies, just jumped the queue. Xiaomi has started rolling out HyperOS 3 updates based on stable Android 17, and it's currently limited to the Xiaomi 17 series.
