Canon is taking to Instagram with a new social advertising campaign to increase awareness about its recently introduced EOS M5 mirrorless camera. As the M5 is built with speed and easy sharing in mind, the #tagyoureit campaign will challenge participating influencers to complete spontaneous photo challenges. Actress and blogger Jamie Chung is heading the campaign, which includes 12 additional influencer photographers.

The participating photographers will tag and challenge each other with specific shots to get, and each challenged photographer will then have 24 hours to complete the task. In turn, they will task the next influencer with a new challenge. The general public can join in the fun by following any of the influencers and accepting public challenges, and may even receive special shoutouts for completing them.

The EOS M5 has been hailed as Canon’s first serious attempt at making a mirrorless camera for enthusiast shooters. It features the same, 24-megapixel sensor from the EOS 80D DSLR, Canon’s unique Dual Pixel autofocus, and a new, 2.36-million dot electronic viewfinder (EVF). The camera is also competitively priced at just $980 for the body only ($1,100 for the kit with 15-45mm lens).

But the features that matter most to the #tagyoureit campaign are likely the built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth capabilities. These features have become increasingly common on both DSLR and mirrorless cameras, and help remove the pain points between taking a photo and sharing it on social media. The EOS M5 can also shoot Full HD 1080/60p videos. This is a bit behind some competing models from the likes of Sony and Panasonic, which offer 4K video, but is suitable for Instagram.

The campaign is live now and will continue through the end of the year. You can participate by following the hashtag on Instagram.

The Canon EOS R has a new big brother. Meet the made-for-stargazing Canon EOS Ra

The latest member of Canon’s quickly growing EOS R mirrorless family is here, and it’s designed for stargazers. The Canon EOS Ra pairs the new RF mount with a sensor that’s designed specifically for astrophotography. The EOS Ra is Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera designed specifically for astrophotography -- though as the company’s third full-frame mirrorless camera, that’s not too surprising.

The Canon EOS Ra houses a CMOS sensor with the same 30.3-megapixel resolution, but adds a special filter to enhance that sensor’s performance when capturing the night sky. The camera uses an infrared cutoff filter, which enhances the transmission of Hα rays. With four times greater transmission of that 656.3nm wavelength, the camera can better capture the vivid color of nebulae, Canon says.

Canon’s EOS-1D X Mark III wants to squash mirrorless with 20 fps, 10-bit color

Canon’s best DSLR is getting a speed boost -- and it’s serious enough to compete with the fastest pro-level camera on the market. On Thursday, October 24, Canon confirmed the development of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. Building on the Mark II, Canon says the camera will capture and deliver the shot “faster than ever before” using enhanced burst speed up to 20 frames per second (fps), an updated autofocus system, and faster Ethernet. The high-end pro camera also adapts the HEIF format, a JPEG-replacement first launched on smartphones, with 10-bit color.

While Canon hasn’t shared the full specs or release date yet, the company teased some of the camera’s biggest features. The full-frame camera will offer a top burst speed of about 20 fps using Live View and 16 fps using the optical viewfinder. Dual CFexpress card slots allow for five times the RAW burst buffer of the Mark II.

Eye autofocus arrives on Canon’s selfie-loving mirrorless for beginners

Canon’s mirrorless camera for newbies, selfie-takers, and vertical video enthusiasts just got a refresh. On Wednesday, September 25, Canon unveiled the Canon EOS M200, a beginner-friendly mirrorless camera that adds eye detection autofocus and 4K video to the features of the older M100.

The Canon EOS M200 keeps the same 24.1-megapixel APS-C sensor as the M100, an unsurprising move considering the budget price. The unchanged sensor means the M200 should snap images that are just as good as those taken with the M100.
