Noted on the official Twitter blog earlier today, the social network plans to launch a new real-time notifications feature within the Web interface of the site. For instance, when a Twitter user receives a reply to a tweet, an interactive pop-up box will appear on the page. This will also occur when a tweet is favorited or retweeted by another user and it will pop up when users receive a direct message or new followers. Within the notification box, Twitter users can directly respond to the action by typing out a response.
Of course, anyone that isn’t interested in receiving notifications will have a significant level of control in how they are displayed. Fairly identical to the notifications system for email, users have the ability to turn off notifications for specific actions as well as limit notifications based on who is tweeting. This also applies to the mobile version of Twitter. Users can limit the number and type of push notifications that appear on their smartphone or tablet.
The new notification system will bring Twitter closer in line with social networks such as Facebook and Instagram, both of which have a notifications system. Studies have shown that notifications help increase the length of time that users spend on social networks, thus increasing the length of time users can be exposed to advertisements and other updates within the Twitter feed.
This notification system will go hand-in-hand with Twitter’s new Web layout, a shift that’s also designed to increase the number of people that stick around on the Web version of the site. Within the redesigned look, users will be able to feature visual content more prominently and pin specific tweets to the top of the feed. Twitter has also included a number of filters that will allow users to eliminate the noise and locate tweets that are more relevant.
