There’s some debate as to whether PDF files or ePUBs are easier to read. Some say that PDFs produce less eye strain and provide a more aesthetically pleasing experience because they’re restricted to showing pages as they were originally saved, omitting adjustments for images, font size, and other page aspects. Some still prefer the flexibility of ePUBs, however, which allow text size to adjust to the dimensions of your tablet or ebook reader’s screen, while retaining the original formatting and layout.
Whatever your preference, some devices offer native support for ePUBs but not PDFs. Also, there are a number of situations where ePUBs are the preferred file format. With that in mind, we offer the following guide on how to convert PDFs to ePUBs.
Calibre (Windows, MacOS, Linux)
The open-source Calibre is a great piece of ebook software for Windows, MacOS, and Linux, and includes a file conversion feature among its suite of tools. Below are instructions for making the PDF-to-ePUB conversion.
Step 1: Drag and drop the PDF you want to convert into Calibre, and click the Convert E-books button at the top of the screen. Depending on our version of Calibre, the button may look like two swirling arrows on a brown book.
Step 2: Select the file’s current format, and the format you want to convert it to, using the Input format and Output format drop-down menus located on the left and right sides of the application window.
Step 3: Make sure the data to the right of the ebook’s cover is correct, click OK, and wait for conversion to complete. Afterward, you’ll be able to put the file on your ebook reader!
Online Convert is one of the more reliable web-based options out there, and you can use it to convert a wide variety of file types. Aside from converting PDFs to ePUBs, you can also convert DOCX files to DOC, for example. Below are instructions for making the PDF-to-ePUB conversion.
Step 1: Navigate to the main Online Convert homepage.
Step 2: Find the PDF file you want to convert by clicking Choose File, Choose from Dropbox, or Choose from Google Drive. Alternatively, enter the URL leading to the PDF. Here, you can also enter additional info regarding the book, such as the title or author.
Step 3: Click Convert file and wait for the conversion to complete. Afterward, you’ll be able to access the file from its designated folder!
The ePUBator app for Android allows you to convert PDFs directly on your smartphone or tablet. It’s easy to use, too, rendering it a go-to solution for those looking to convert PDF files on the go.
Step 1: Download and launch the app. Afterward, tap Convert PDF.
Step 2: Locate the folder on your smartphone or tablet that contains the PDF you want to convert. Once found, tap the PDF file.
Step 3: The conversion process should begin automatically. Once finished, tap Verify ePUB to confirm to ensure the conversion worked as intended. The new ePUB file should be in the same folder as the original PDF. You can also halt the conversion for whatever reason by tapping Stop during the conversion process.
