Add another control option to the list for Nintendo’s Wii U. In honor of the coming Super Smash Bros. revival, due to arrive on the console this winter, the company has announced a GameCube Controller Adapter. Apparently powered by two USB cords plugged into the front of the Wii U, the adapter allows for four wired controllers from the older console to be connected.

Nintendo revealed the peripheral on its official Twitter feed:

There’s no word on release plans, pricing, or anything of that nature — just the photo — and Nintendo has declined requests for comment. We’ll likely learn more at E3 in a couple weeks, especially with Nintendo hosting a Smash Bros. tournament at the show.

The biggest gaming news of 2023: Insomniac leak, GTA 6 reveal, and more
Lucia and her partner rob a store in GTA 6.

2023 was a roller coaster for the video games industry. On the software side, it was a historic year for new releases. We got everything from big success stories like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to memorable indies in Venba and Chants of Sennaar. But from the business side, 2023 was a lot more tumultuous. While some notable studio acquisitions and game announcements happened, thousands of developers were laid off, entire studios were shut down or hacked, and the provider of one of the most popular game engines landed in hot water after trying to roll out a controversial change.

The most notable gaming news stories of 2023 run the gamut from genuinely exciting to thoroughly disappointed. That speaks to a video game industry bound to head into an odd 2024 that lacks the known quantity bombshells of this year and continues to reel from layoffs. In last year's iteration of this article, my editor said that the 2020s are shaping up to be "the most pivotal decade in gaming history when all is said and done." If this year is anything to go by, that will almost certainly be true. These were the gaming stories that defined 2023, for better and much worse.

Video game adaptations are about to change the game in 2024
Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal as Ellie and Joel looking at the camera in HBO's "The Last of Us."

I wouldn't have believed it if someone told me 10 years ago that the best TV and movies I would see in 2023 would be adaptations of video games. And yet, here we are. It's been a slow, grueling road filled with more downs than ups, and yet the code seems to have been cracked. Video game adaptations aren't just good now; they're often spectacular.

While we got a few hits here and there in years prior, such as the animated Castlevania series and Witcher show, it was in 2023 that shows like The Last of Us on HBO really made a statement to the world that, when understood and handled correctly, these adaptations could stand alongside any other prestige production. While it is satisfying in its own right for fans to get more quality content from our favorite franchises, the success of these shows and films will only be leveraged more by the industry in 2024 and beyond.
Adapt and survive
Repackaging games for film and TV is the equivalent of 1980s and '90s cartoons made exclusively to sell toys. Not to sound too cynical, but from a corporate perspective, they are funded with the intention of converting a new audience into gamers. And we have seen compelling proof that, when it works, it is very effective. Even a game that was dragged through the mud as much as Cyberpunk 2077 saw a huge surge in sales following the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, even before the full 2.0 version and Phantom Liberty DLC launched. The same applies to older titles like The Last of Us, Mario, and The Witcher.

Unwrapping our favorite holiday gaming memories: GameCube, Pokémon, and more
A Nintendo GameCube sits on a table with Luigi's Mansion.

The holidays can be a special (or stressful) time. In a best-case scenario, it means getting to spend some time with loved ones and soaking in some warm vibes at the end of a hectic year. Holidays like Christmas are about more than gift-giving; they’re the rare moments in any given year where it feels like peace on Earth could be possible.

But, of course, the presents don’t hurt. Memorable gifts can create formative memories for kids and adults alike. That’s the entire premise of the classic A Christmas Story, which builds a coming-of-age story around a coveted Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun. Some presents take on a symbolic quality, whether they get kids interested in something that will one day become part of their career or bring them closer to their family.
