Attention all forlorn and bitter iPhone 3G users: Apple might actually have a fix for that ill-fated iOS 4 upgrade your phone was subjected to. IPhone 3G users have been complaining that the purportedly improved software is incompatible with the older models’ hardware. Actually, they are more than complaining; one iPhone 3G owner is suing Apple and accusing the company of purposefully creating software that would leave users no choice but to upgrade to the iPhone 4.
Many iPhone 3G users are echoing her accusations, so they could all be somewhat wary about trusting this supposed iOS 4.2 upgrade that could restore their phone’s former functionality. IOS 4 more or less destroyed it, and 4.1 was a mild improvement that didn’t deliver a complete fix. Not to mention that 4.1′s failure to improve issues with the iPhone 4 did little to boost consumer confidence. But now sources are claiming Apple is making amends, and 4.2 delivers.
IOS 4.2 is primarily intended for the iPad, but is compatible with the iPod touch and iPhone as well. TiPb, an Apple blog, tested the Golden Master seed (released last week to developers) of 4.2 on the 3G to vastly improved results. In a video of the demonstration, TiPb shows that the phone is overall much more responsive – text entry and browsing capabilities are quicker and reminiscent of the phone’s promised performance.
Apple’s site reports the upgrade will be available in November, and there are claims it could be as early as this week.
The question for iPhone 3G users clinging to pre-iOS 4 firmware will be: Do you take the leap of faith and upgrade to 4.2, or are you too critical of Apple and bent on avoiding the dreaded “iBrick”? The imminent release of iOS 4.2 should yield the answer.
4.2 is running great on my 3G. Backed everything up, master reset and got new software. Just like new. And much smoother.
Using IOS 4.2 GM on my 3G and it is silky smooth. Looks like Apple finally cleaned up the 4.X release.
Steve Jobs, please unlock those old out of contract 3G's
In the UK operators do that, O2 did it in less than 48 hours for me, it was a second hand phone too!
Still on a 3G, id have been happy without an OS upgrade but that is not in the Apple roadmap, they want to lock people to iphones so of course they are going to upgrade to a new model.
Stay with what you know and enjoy, now does that mean the new OS is the best? Well not at all, it is feature dependent, at the end of the day its all exciting but in reality with the price you pay for your iphone why should you not have an OS upgrade? They are trying to hold a market, not push one phone like we were used to.
This is a smartphone so operating system updates should come as standard.
Both of my Blackberry's still work great. I'm now eligible for an upgrade, so I think I'll try the Droid just for kicks. If I don't like it, I can always use one of my Blackberry's instead. Bahahaha! Silly iBrick sheeple. snicker. : )
a company like apple goes out of its way on creativity, knocks brick phones out of the way, sets the standard bar all the way to the sky,so that a regular person can hold a gadget like the iphone. The IPhone is a miracle.
take a break folks, and stand behind this product. stop whining and wait for the udates.
and yea soo what! Why not get the new Iphone. eventually you will,
thank you apple, I got to say "Thank You!!!! from the bottom of my heart" for the iphone family of phones!
Rock on!
Miracle? lol, you haven't used Nokia devices have you? App stores( Handago, Getjar, video calls, VOIP (fring), multitasking, Nokia was doing all this 7 years ago. Get an N8 and see what they are doing now, already years ahead of the competition.
Just get a updated iPhone why are people complaining about a outdated iPhone 3G. When usually most phones don't ever get updates seems like everyone just want everything without updating. What about this suing that's just crazy now a days you can sue over spilled milk when they stop making updates for phones the complaints will still come. I really don't care if you don't like what I have to say cause most of you won't.
You're an ijit
wow, thats what you brought to the table.
i can understand complaining, but a lawsuit is idiotic. I am happy apple is providing these updates. these seem to be trying to fix mistakes as they happen. along with the comment above at least my they are trying to add functionality for my iphone 3g. everyone elses phone in my house has gotten no better since they day they bought it and hardware wise has actually gotten much worse as they fall apart and break. for a device of its age my iphone 3g is still making me happy and should get even better soon.
So if I upgrade and it doesnt help or my phone is worse, then what? Still my fault? It was my choice even though its plastered all over the net how 4.2 will fix 3g phones. 3g phoners should not downgrade because of security issues.? But your choice to upgrade. If all is good on 4.2 and you never upgraded then you are an idiot. If you updated to 4.2 and your phone is worse, then you are an idiot. Glad to hear apple trying to do something, I agree with Tmfs maybe our phone carriers should be more responsible too. Back up your products you sell like other good operating stores out there. Iphone users and apple lovers would at least feel like wow they do look after us and not only take our money.
I am a 3g user and would love to have a phone that works the same way as when I originally bought it. If 4.2 does this then awesome. If it doesn't then you would think Apple and the phone companies would work out a deal so you can at least upgrade at a reasonable price, saving your contract and bank account. I went for the 3g as it was all I could afford with a 3 year contract and that was not even a year ago. Then came iphone 4, and next thing you know out comes iphone 5. My 3g dont work can I upgrade? Oh too bad you still stuck on a 3 year contract? If the update works then at least I have my old working 3g phone back and will try to upgrade in 2.5 years from now. Thanks Apple for still thinking of us low life 3g users by trying to help fix your/my old 3g iphone.
No, I will not be upgrading to 4.2 until it has been well documented by other guinea pigs that it actually works. I made the mistake of upgrading to 4.0 because I believed Apple was infallible. What a mistake. I was able to, with much difficulty, downgrade to 3.1.3 and much prefer a usable phone with an older OS than a brick with a new OS.
4.0 gave everyone+me, the NEW iBrick! 4.1 helped… running a bit smoother… i agree with you, im waiting 'till others say it helped…
BTW: 4.2 released today!
