Don’t have an Xbox One yet? Get console, game for $250 right now

The Xbox One S launches in just a few weeks, offering a sleek, stylish, and smaller design along with a much-needed storage upgrade. But if you don’t mind playing on chunkier hardware, you might want to buy the original system. Right now and for the duration of the summer, the Xbox One is only $250.

The original Xbox One (without Kinect), complete with a 500GB hard drive, was made available in 2014 for $400, but seasonal discounts and other price cuts have all but guaranteed you wouldn’t pay that much today. While $250 is a mighty fine price for the console, you won’t just get the system — according to Microsoft, this deal applies to “any” 500GB Xbox One package, so you’ll have a game to play right away.

The Quantum Break and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition bundles are mentioned, but the announcement should mean that the Sunset Overdrive console will be cut to $250, as well. The game remains one of the best on the system, and perhaps Insomniac’s finest work that doesn’t have “Ratchet & Clank” in the name. If you want a game not included in a premade bundle, you can do that as well with the “Name your Game” package, which allows you to pick from Forza Motorsport 6, Rare Replay, the aforementioned Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, and the stellar Rise of the Tomb Raider. Curiously missing from the offer is Halo 5: Guardians, arguably the biggest exclusive for the system to date and the poster boy for the Xbox brand.

If you want to try some of Microsoft’s titles but don’t want to shell out several hundred dollars to build a PC for “Xbox Play Anywhere” games, this bundle looks like the perfect choice. Of course, with Project Scorpio only about a year away, it might still be best to exercise a little restraint.

Don’t sleep on these one-of-a-kind games that launched in February
A skeleton touches a still life in Please, Touch the Artwork 2.

We're only two months into 2024, but it's already a surprisingly front-loaded year for new games. We kicked the year off with great Like a Dragon, Tekken, and Prince of Persia games in January, but February turned the heat up even more. Persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth gave us two excellent RPGs, while Helldivers 2 has been a surprise hit for Sony. Even just trying to keep up with the major releases has been a daunting task.

Those aren't the only great games that have dropped this year, though. February, in particular, was a haven for genre-bending indie projects that are unlike anything we've ever seen before. From a poker roguelike to an open-world puzzle game, we've had our hands full between long RPGs. If you're looking to build up a backlog as we move into what's likely to be a quieter stretch of the year, these are the February releases that you should consider revisiting.

Xbox's logo used during the Extended Games Showcase

Microsoft just released the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, and it contained lots of crucial details on the future of Xbox. Microsoft addressed everything from how many games it will make multiplatform to the arrival of Activision Blizzard games on Xbox Game Pass to future Xbox hardware.

If you don't want to listen to the full 23-minute podcast and want more details than what's shared in the Xbox Wire post about the discussion, here's a quick rundown of the biggest points made during the episode.
Four Xbox games are going multiplatform
To kick things off, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, addressed the multiplatform Xbox game rumors. "We made the decision that we’re going to take four games to the other consoles. Just four games, not a change to our kind of fundamental exclusive strategy,” he said. “We’re making these decisions for some specific reasons. We make every decision with the long-term health of Xbox in mind, and long-term health of Xbox means a growing platform, our games performing, building the best platform for creators, reaching as many players as we can."
