The Gamescom Opening Night Live stage.
This story is part of our complete Gamescom 2026 coverage

Similar to E3, Gamescom is an annual event held in Cologne, Germany that celebrates all things video games. Starting on August 20 and running through the 24, several publishers offer visitors an opportunity to try out their latest projects on the showroom floor. Companies like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Google, however, like to kick off the show a day earlier by holding some press conferences of their own, and these are moments that you usually don’t want to miss.

Gamescom differs from E3 in that it doesn’t usually offer a ton of AAA game announcements, but it’s still a great opportunity to see upcoming games in action and learn more about gaming hardware arriving in the future. If you want to catch up on all the presentations, you can learn about the biggest gaming announcements that came from the show below.

Nintendo was the first major publisher to reveal new information during Gamescom. The video presentation ran for 20 minutes and focused on indie games coming to the Nintendo Switch. We did a separate round-up on all the games announced during the Indie World Showcase, with some of the biggest titles being Risk of Rain 2, Eastward, Superhot, The Touryst, and the Hotline Miami collection.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad correctly predicted one of the games would be an Xbox and Microsoft exclusive during the presentation. This turned out to be Ori and the Blind Forest, which released several years ago to critical acclaim and currently has a sequel in production.

  • PvP mode Ghost War from Ghost Recon Breakpoint
  • Metro Exodus’ The Two Colonels DLC (due out tomorrow)
  • Blair Witch Insanity story trailer and arrival to Game Pass on release on August 30

Google Stadia Connect

Google has already gone in-depth with its game-streaming service Stadia, detailing the requirements for internet speeds as well as the features it will have. During its Stadia Connect presentation at Gamescom, the focus was taken off of the service itself and onto the game it will launch with.

We reported on the all the titles announced for Stadia at Gamescom, with titles Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs Legion, Darksiders Genesis, and the platform’s timed exclusive Orcs Must Die! 3 being the biggest highlights. Another exclusive for Stadia named Gylt was shown later during Gamescom Opening Night Live.

Though the focus was placed on the games, it would’ve been a great opportunity to show how well Stadia can run games that demand low latency. Mortal Kombat 11 and Samurai Shodown will be coming to the service, and a live match between professional players would have served as a great proof of concept before the service launches later this year. We’d also like to see a glimpse of the exclusive projects Google is preparing for Stadia after its launch.

Epic MegaJam 2026

Epic Games has just announced the 2026 Epic AI MegaJam, which is looking to see how much game development can be squeezed into a very short window. This is running from November 12 through November 15.

Participants can work alone or in teams of up to five people, build in Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite, and bring along “as many AI agents as you want.” Epic explicitly encourages coding agents, AI-generated assets, audio tools, writing tools, and other AI systems. The official event page literally says "Vibe your way to $50k.”

Monster Hunter Outlanders arrives on Android and iOS next week with four-player co-op
The free-to-play spin-off launches October 29 with open-world exploration, mobile-focused combat, and a building system.

It’s turning into a pretty good time to be a Monster Hunter fan who plays on a phone. Capcom has confirmed that Monster Hunter Outlanders will launch on Android and iOS on October 29, giving the series a new mobile-first game just as Monster Hunter Rise is also preparing to make the jump to smartphones through Netflix.

Outlanders is being developed by Tencent subsidiary TiMi Studio Group under license and supervision from Capcom. Unlike Rise, which appears to be the full console and PC game adapted for mobile, Outlanders is a free-to-play survival hunting game made specifically for phones.

Phantom Blade Zero makes me think Sony might have a point about going all digital
Physical games still matter, but when the disc isn't a complete copy of the game, the argument for keeping it becomes harder to make.

I'm a big supporter of physical games. There's something satisfying about owning a disc, lending it to a friend, or grabbing a bargain without waiting for a digital storefront to approve the price. But Phantom Blade Zero has me questioning one of the biggest arguments in the physical-versus-digital debate. The game's digital version launches on October 29, 2026, while its physical PS5 editions, including Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate versions, won't arrive until 2027.

And there's another wrinkle: the digital version reportedly needs up to 134GB of storage, raising questions about how much of the game can actually fit on a standard Blu-ray disc. A standard PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray disc maxes out at 100GB, so Phantom Blade Zero may need to ship across multiple discs or require players to download additional data to finish installing it. Either way, the idea of popping in a disc and having the complete game ready to play gets a little murkier.
