PSN goes dark for scheduled maintenance

Sony PlayStation is performing some much-needed maintenance on its PlayStation Network today, starting earlier this morning at 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. (PST). “During this time, registration and Account Management will be inaccessible, including the password reset process. While some users may experience difficulty signing in to PSN, the majority of customers will be able to play online as well as sign in to external sites that require PSN authentication,” PlayStation says.

There were rumors that today’s upkeep might result in users regaining access to the PlayStation Store, but Sony says it’s still targeting an end of month launch date for those renewed services.

Last time Sony tried to fix its fatally flawed security system, the mass rush of users trying to change their passwords and account information proved too much for Sony and the process had to be postponed. As its users and the rest of the world has seen, the PSN as well as various other Sony properties have been victim to various hacks exposing the insecure system – all of which are costing the company dearly. Sony recently revealed that the PSN outage and resulting effects–as well as the Japanese earthquake–will result in a nearly $3.2 billion loss this year.

Users should keep an eye on PlayStation’s Twitter account, which should be providing updates throughout the day. We know this is getting old, but be patient PSP and PS3 users, a fix is (allegedly) on the way. We’d like to say things can only get better, but we don’t want to jinx anything considering the last couple days.
